In search of the Twitter Hacker !

In search of the Twitter Hacker !

Mar 12, 2011
Labor woes. Steroids. Corrupt college programs. There are many serious issues facing the sports world. But they all are a distant second to one other. It's someone so skilled, so savvy, that you may not have even heard of him. The Twitter Hacker. Let's start at the beginning. Or what could be the beginning. The Twitter Hacker is so stealthy and subtle that there's no way to know when he began hacking into the accounts of our athletes. But one of the first cases that caught some attention came last May when the following appeared on the Twitter account of Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce after the Celtics took a 2-0 lead over the Magic in the Eastern Conference finals: "Anybody got a BROOM?" Ha! A confident athlete talking trash. Nothing remotely out of the ordinary there. But soon after, Pierce's digital media rep claimed that tweet did not come from Pierce, claiming the "BROOM" tweet was "courtesy of a hack." And that they were ...

PIL filed in Court to Ban 'Pokémon Go' in India for Hurting Religious Sentiments

Sep 09, 2016
Pokémon GO has yet not been officially launched in India, but the location-based augmented reality game has already fueled a privacy debate and request for Ban. Isn't that weird? A Gujarat resident, Alay Anil Dave has recently filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gujarat High Court against Niantic, developers of Pokémon Go , over allegations that the game is hurting religious sentiments of Hindus and Jains by showing virtual eggs in places of worship of different religious groups. The launch date of Pokémon GO for India has not been announced so far, but millions of Indians have already downloaded the game from 3rd-party app markets and playing it on the streets. However, there are many still waiting for an official release of the game in India, as they don't want to end up installing malicious versions of Pokémon GO that could install malware on their phones, allowing hackers to compromise their devices. Pokémon GO has become the most successful game lau...

Hacking Virtual Reality – Researchers Exploit Popular Bigscreen VR App

Hacking Virtual Reality – Researchers Exploit Popular Bigscreen VR App

Feb 22, 2019
A team of cybersecurity researchers from the University of New Haven yesterday released a video demonstrating how vulnerabilities that most programmers often underestimate could have allowed hackers to evade privacy and security of your virtual reality experience as well as the real world. According to the researchers—Ibrahim Baggili, Peter Casey and Martin Vondráček—the underlying vulnerabilities, technical details of which are not yet publicly available but shared exclusively with The Hacker News , resided in a popular virtual reality (VR) application called Bigscreen and the Unity game development platform, on which Bigscreen is built. Bigscreen is a popular VR application that describes itself as a "virtual living room," enabling friends to hang out together in virtual world, watch movies in a virtual cinema, chat in the lobby, make private rooms, collaborate on projects together, share their computer screens or control in a virtual environment and more. Scary ...

Game of Thrones and HBO — Twitter, Facebook Accounts Hacked

Aug 17, 2017
The Game of Thrones hacking saga continues, but this time it's the HBO's and GOT's official Twitter and Facebook accounts got compromised, rather than upcoming episodes. As if the leak of episodes by hackers and the accidental airing of an upcoming episode of Game of Thrones by HBO itself were not enough, a notorious group of hackers took over the official Twitter and Facebook accounts for HBO as well as Game of Thrones Wednesday night. The hacker group from Saudi Arabia, dubbed OurMine , claimed responsibility for the hack, posting a message on both HBO's official Twitter and Facebook accounts, which read: "Hi, OurMine are here, we are just testing your security, HBO team, please contact us to upgrade the security," followed by a contact link for the group. This message was followed by another one, wherein hackers asked people to make the hashtag #HBOhacked trending on Twitter, which it did. Ourmine is the same group of hackers from Saudi Arabia ...

Epic Games Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Hacked 'Fortnite' Accounts

Aug 13, 2019
Epic Games, the creator of the popular 'Fortnite' video game, is facing a class-action lawsuit from gamers over hacked Fortnite accounts, accusing the company of failing to maintain adequate security measures and notify users of the security breach in a timely manner. The lawsuit, filed by 'Franklin D. Azar and Associates' in the United States District Court in North Carolina on behalf of over 100 affected users, claims that "affected Fortnite users have suffered an ascertainable loss in that they have had fraudulent charges made to their credit or debit cards." According to the lawsuit, Epic Games acknowledged a vulnerability in its system that allowed hackers to unauthorizedly access players' account and purchase in-game currency using their saved credit or debit cards. Apparently, the law firm is trying to connect two separate reports—first, a responsible vulnerability disclosure in Fortnite system and second, multiple password reuse and phish...

Oopss! HBO Itself Accidentally Leaked 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Episode 6

Oopss! HBO Itself Accidentally Leaked 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Episode 6

Aug 16, 2017
HBO doesn't need hackers to leak its widely watched " Game of Thrones " episodes, as it is sufficient enough to leak them by its own. In what seems to be a terrible blunder, HBO Spain appeared to have accidentally broadcast the next episode— Episode 6 —of Game of Thrones season 7 five days before its official premiere. And as expected, the GoT episode 6 quickly began circulating online. HBO has recently been facing trouble from a hacker or group of hackers who claimed to have obtained nearly 1.5 terabytes of information from the entertainment company. Late last month, the unknown hackers dropped upcoming episodes of "Ballers" as well as "Room 104," along with a script of the fourth episode of "Game of Thrones" on the internet. The leak was followed by another dump of a half-gigabyte sample of stolen HBO data, including HBO's emails, employment agreements, and balance sheets, along with the script of the upcoming Game of Thro...

Russian hacker illegally ported Xbox LIVE Arcade Game to PC

Russian hacker illegally ported Xbox LIVE Arcade Game to PC

Jun 05, 2013
A Russian hacker who goes by the handle " Barabus " on the GameDev.ru forums illegally crack Xbox Live Arcade game The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile , developed by Ska Studios and port it on PC. He claimed that he was justified in illegal cracking: " This is not piracy, this is restoration of justice. The authors are not very nice to publish the game exclusively for the Xbox 360, making it impossible for PC gamers to play in such a great game ."  The port is currently in beta and has no permissions from Ska Studios to even exist. But this isn't a problem, according to the developer, as they say they're not stealing anything from Ska Studios. In the same forum post, the game's creator Ska Studios founder James Silva said: " I guess you could say my reaction is mixed. I'm flattered that there's this much interest in Vampire Smile on PC. I'm not mad about the crack itself, in fact, I'm actually pretty impressed. But I'm bewildered by the cracker's attempt to jus...

Winos 4.0 Malware Infects Gamers Through Malicious Game Optimization Apps

Nov 06, 2024 Malware / Online Security
Cybersecurity researchers are warning that a command-and-control (C&C) framework called Winos is being distributed within gaming-related applications like installation tools, speed boosters, and optimization utilities. "Winos 4.0 is an advanced malicious framework that offers comprehensive functionality, a stable architecture, and efficient control over numerous online endpoints to execute further actions," Fortinet FortiGuard Labs said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "Rebuilt from Gh0st RAT , it includes several modular components, each handling distinct functions." Campaigns distributing Winos 4.0 were documented back in June by Trend Micro and the KnownSec 404 Team. The cybersecurity companies are tracking the activity cluster under the names Void Arachne and Silver Fox. These attacks have been observed targeting Chinese-speaking users, leveraging black hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tactics, social media, and messaging platforms like Te...

Learn Ethical Hacking — Get 8 Online Courses For Just $29

Oct 17, 2017
With the rise in cyber-crimes, ethical hacking has become a powerful strategy in the fight against online threats. In general terms, ethical hackers are authorised to break into supposedly 'secure' computer systems without malicious intent, but with the aim of discovering vulnerabilities to bring about improved protection. Ethical Hackers are now kind of becoming the alchemists of the 21st century. More and more organisations are being targeted in cyber-attacks, and they must get to know their enemy if they are to protect vital networks. Meet the professional, ethical hacker. Despite this, the common belief among many at-risk companies is that 'to outwit a hacker, you need to hire one'. With so much at stake, even technology providers are turning to those with hacking skills to find the flaws in their products and fix them before the baddies can exploit them. Infamous Apple Hacker Turned Ethical; Hired by Facebook 23-year-old George 'GeoHot' Ho...
