Why Defenders Should Embrace a Hacker Mindset

Why Defenders Should Embrace a Hacker Mindset

Nov 20, 2023 Threat Management / Red Team
Today's security leaders must manage a constantly evolving attack surface and a dynamic threat environment due to interconnected devices, cloud services, IoT technologies, and hybrid work environments. Adversaries are constantly introducing new attack techniques, and not all companies have internal Red Teams or unlimited security resources to stay on top of the latest threats. On top of that, today's attackers are indiscriminate and every business - big or small - needs to be prepared. It is no longer enough for security teams to  detect and respond ; we must now also  predict and prevent . To handle today's security environment, defenders need to be agile and innovative. In short, we need to start thinking like a hacker.  Taking the mindset of an opportunistic threat actor allows you to not only gain a better understanding of potentially exploitable pathways, but also to more effectively prioritize your remediation efforts. It also helps you move past potentially harm...

British Hacker Wins Legal Battle Over Encryption Keys

British Hacker Wins Legal Battle Over Encryption Keys

May 11, 2016
In Brief Britain's top crime fighting force has failed in a legal attempt to force alleged hacker Lauri Love to hand over his hard disk's encryption keys. In a landmark case, District Judge Nina Tempia said the investigative agency should have used the normal police powers rather than a civil action to obtain the evidence. Lauri Love, a 31-year-old hacker, has been accused of aiding cyber-attacks against U.S. targets, including NASA, FBI, US Army and US Federal Reserve networks. The National Crime Agency (NCA) has failed in a legal attempt to force the British citizen and political hacktivist Lauri Love to hand over the keys to encrypted data that has been seized from his home two years ago. At a Tuesday hearing in Court Seven at Westminster Magistrates' Court, the NCA's application to make Love disclose his encrypted computer passwords was refused by the judge. Hacker Fighting Extradition to U.S. Love, 31, is currently fighting extradition to the Uni...
Over 100 VS Code Extensions Exposed Developers to Hidden Supply Chain Risks

Over 100 VS Code Extensions Exposed Developers to Hidden Supply Chain Risks

Oct 15, 2025 Software Supply Chain / Malware
New research has uncovered that publishers of over 100 Visual Studio Code (VS Code) extensions leaked access tokens that could be exploited by bad actors to update the extensions, posing a critical software supply chain risk. "A leaked VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX PAT [personal access token] allows an attacker to directly distribute a malicious extension update across the entire install base," Wiz security researcher Rami McCarthy said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "An attacker who discovered this issue would have been able to directly distribute malware to the cumulative 150,000 install base." The cloud security firm noted in many cases publishers failed to account for the fact that VS Code extensions, while distributed as .vsix files, can be unzipped and inspected, exposing hard-coded secrets embedded into them. In all, Wiz said it found over 550 validated secrets, distributed across more than 500 extensions from hundreds of distinct publishers....

"Pakistan People's Party" Website Hacked — Message for Bilawal Bhutto

Oct 08, 2014
On Tuesday, Indian and Pakistani army forces continued to exchange fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, which was started when Pakistan's military fired machine guns and mortars at about 60 Indian army posts during last week. Tensions between the two countries have intensified since Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the only son of former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, made a statement that his Pakistan People's Party (PPP) would take back entire Kashmir from India. However, the Indian political party described his statement as " childish " and " irresponsible ." Different reactions came from different people out there from India for the chairman of Pakistan People's Party and Central Executive Committee Bilawal Bhutto, but Hackers have their own way of expressing their part. Here Bilawal Bhutto said that he would not leave an inch of Kashmir with India, and there an Indian Hacker defac...

Exclusive – Any Mitron (Viral TikTok Clone) Profile Can Be Hacked in Seconds

May 30, 2020
Mitron (means "friends" in Hindi), you have been fooled again! Mitron is not really a 'Made in India' product, and the viral app contains a highly critical, unpatched vulnerability that could allow anyone to hack into any user account without requiring interaction from the targeted users or their passwords. I am sure many of you already know what TikTok is, and those still unaware, it's a highly popular video social platform where people upload short videos of themselves doing things like lip-syncing and dancing. The wrath faced by Chinese-owned TikTok from all directions—mostly due to data security and ethnopolitical reasons—gave birth to new alternatives in the market, one of which is the Mitron app for Android. Mitron video social platform recently caught headlines when the Android app crazily gained over 5 million installations and 250,000 5-star ratings in just 48 days after being released on the Google Play Store. Popped out of nowhere, Mitron i...
Hackers Can Abuse Visual Studio Marketplace to Target Developers with Malicious Extensions

Hackers Can Abuse Visual Studio Marketplace to Target Developers with Malicious Extensions

Jan 09, 2023 Supply Chain / CodeSec
A new attack vector targeting the Visual Studio Code extensions marketplace could be leveraged to upload rogue extensions masquerading as their legitimate counterparts with the goal of mounting supply chain attacks. The technique "could act as an entry point for an attack on many organizations," Aqua security researcher Ilay Goldman  said  in a report published last week. VS Code extensions, curated via a  marketplace  made available by Microsoft, allow developers to add programming languages, debuggers, and tools to the VS Code source-code editor to augment their workflows.  "All extensions run with the privileges of the user that has opened the VS Code without any sandbox," Goldman said, explaining the potential risks of using VS Code extensions. "This means that the extension can install any program on your computer including ransomwares, wipers, and more." To that end, Aqua found that not only is it possible for a threat actor to impersonate a po...

Insider Threats vs Hackers - by Emmett Jorgensen

Nov 06, 2011
Insider Threats vs Hackers - by Emmett Jorgensen Emmett Jorgensen has worked in IT and Infosec for over 10 years. He works for Kanguru Solutions (www.kanguru.com), a manufacturer of secure portable storage solutions. Article taken from 'The Hacker News' Magazine - October Edition. You can Download it from Here . News about cyber security, Anonymous, and Lulzsec are constantly making headlines these days, as well they should. It seems that Anonymous is hacking into confidential information on an almost weekly basis. Yet, despite this talk of external risks, the real threat to businesses often comes from within, in the form of insider threats. Although the intent of a hacker is generally more insidious, the insider threat is more prevalent simply due to an employee's access to company data. Insiders often have access to sensitive data without having to circumvent security measures designed to keep out external threats. But which is really a bigger threat to your orga...

Xiaomi Data Breach — "Exposing Xiaomi" Talk Pulled from Hacking Conference

Oct 30, 2014
China's number one — and the world's 3rd largest — smartphone manufacturer, Xiaomi , which is trying to make inroads into India's booming mobile phone market, was found secretly sending users' personal data , including IMEI numbers, phone numbers and text messages to the web servers back to Beijing in China. INDIA AND TAIWAN vs XIAOMI This issue raised higher concerns across many countries, proactively in India, Singapore and Taiwan. The Indian Air Force (IAF) — among the largest in the world — warned its employees and their belongings that their private information was being shipped over to servers in China, and asked them to avoid using Xiaomi smartphones due to security risk. Taiwanese Government underlined similar concerns before Xiaomi's launch in India. Xiaomi is facing an investigation in Taiwan for alleged cyber security threat, as a result of which last month the Taiwanese government decided to ban the company due to several privacy controversies. Malicious VSX Extension "SleepyDuck" Uses Ethereum to Keep Its Command Server Alive

Nov 03, 2025 Cryptocurrency / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a new malicious extension in the Open VSX registry that harbors a remote access trojan called SleepyDuck . According to Secure Annex's John Tuckner, the extension in question, juan-bianco.solidity-vlang (version 0.0.7), was first published on October 31, 2025, as a completely benign library that was subsequently updated to version 0.0.8 on November 1 to include new malicious capabilities after reaching 14,000 downloads. "The malware includes sandbox evasion techniques and utilizes an Ethereum contract to update its command and control address in case the original address is taken down," Tuckner added . Campaigns distributing rogue extensions targeting Solidity developers have been repeatedly detected across both the Visual Studio Extension Marketplace and Open VSX. In July 2025, Kaspersky disclosed that a Russian developer lost $500,000 in cryptocurrency assets after installing one such extension through Cursor. In the latest...
