Your TV now watching you too! LG Smart TV caught collecting owners' Habits and USB file names

Nov 20, 2013
Now your TV is also watching you, and is smart enough to spy on you. A UK blogger, developer and Linux enthusiast, known only as  DoctorBeet  has discovered that LG's smart TVs are sending personal information back to the company's servers about what channels you watch and viewing habits. Actually, LG conducts the data collection for its Smart Ad function, which advertisers can use to see when it is best to target their products at the most suitable audience. LG Smart Ad analyses users favorite programs, online behavior, search keywords and other information to offer relevant ads to target audiences. For example, LG Smart Ad can feature sharp suits to men, or alluring cosmetics and fragrances for women. After inspecting the outgoing traffic from his smart TV, DoctorBeet noticed that a unique device ID, along with the TV channel name was being transmitted each time he changed channels. His investigation also indicated that the TVs uploaded information about th

Google engineers over surveillance scandal: 'Fuck you NSA'

Nov 06, 2013
On Tuesday, the Washington Post revealed a few more NSA slides released by Edward Snowden, which revealed that the spy agency NSA was infiltrating the private data links between Google and Yahoo data centers as part of a program called MUSCULAR . Chairman and former CEO of Google Eric Schmidt says the company's executives are shocked by allegations that the National Security Agency has been collecting data from the search engine's servers. " It's really outrageous that the NSA was looking between the Google data centers, if that's true ," he said. Overnight, Two Google's Security engineers -  Mike Hearn and   Brandon Downey expressed reasonable anger about the news on Google+, said " Fuck these guys ", where these represent NSA and GCHQ. I've spent the last ten years of my life trying to keep Google's users safe and secure from the many diverse threats Google faces. Fuck You to the people who made these slides. I am not American, I am a Brit, but i

Navigating the Threat Landscape: Understanding Exposure Management, Pentesting, Red Teaming and RBVM

Apr 29, 2024Exposure Management / Attack Surface
It comes as no surprise that today's cyber threats are orders of magnitude more complex than those of the past. And the ever-evolving tactics that attackers use demand the adoption of better, more holistic and consolidated ways to meet this non-stop challenge. Security teams constantly look for ways to reduce risk while improving security posture, but many approaches offer piecemeal solutions – zeroing in on one particular element of the evolving threat landscape challenge – missing the forest for the trees.  In the last few years, Exposure Management has become known as a comprehensive way of reigning in the chaos, giving organizations a true fighting chance to reduce risk and improve posture. In this article I'll cover what Exposure Management is, how it stacks up against some alternative approaches and why building an Exposure Management program should be on  your 2024 to-do list. What is Exposure Management?  Exposure Management is the systematic identification, evaluation,

Smartphones, A Perfect Cyber Espionage and Surveillance Weapon

The use of mobile devices in government environments concerns the secret service of any states, cyber espionage more often exploits the mobile platforms. Mobile devices are reason of great concern for governments, they have a great computational capability, huge memories to store our personal data, GPS to follow our movements and are equipped with a camera and microphone to increase our experience in mobility. The advent of monitoring apps like Mobistealth has already brought the possibility of using the aforementioned features to keep tabs on a target device irrespective of the geographic distance to light. However, it has also raised red flags over the possibility of exploitation of such features by attackers for cyber espionage . The problem is well known to governments that are adopting necessary countermeasures especially following the recent revelations about the U.S. Surveillance program . The UK Government has decided to ban iPads from the Cabinet over foreign e

'Dark Mail Alliance', Future of surveillance proof email technology

Oct 31, 2013
Yesterday I learned about  ' Dark Mail Alliance ', where  Lavabit , reportedly an email provider for NSA leaker Edward Snowden and Silent Circle comes together to create a surveillance-proof email technology. Ladar Levison at Lavabit and Silent Circle CEO Mike Janke, Founders of two e-mail services that recently shut down amid government efforts to nab encryption keys, as well as the larger revelations regarding the NSA's surveillance efforts. The newly developed technology has been designed to look just like ordinary email, with an interface that includes all the usual folders i.e. inbox, sent mail, and drafts. But where it differs is that it applies peer-to-peer encryption not only to the body of the digital missive, but also to its metadata (To:, From: and Subject fields) that third parties are most likely to collect. The encryption, based on a Silent Circle instant messaging protocol called SCIMP and the secret keys generated to encrypt the communic

'LinkedIn Intro' iOS app can read your emails in iPhone

Oct 25, 2013
Your LinkedIn profile is your digital resume. Yesterday, LinkedIn launched a new app for for iOS devices called Intro ' LinkedIn Intro '. With this feature an email on your iPhone will display a picture of the sender, with useful profile info from LinkedIn. Basically, to use the service, a LinkedIn user must route all of their emails (any provider i.e. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) through LinkedIn's 'Intro' servers, which will inject fancy business centric HTML profile right in your emails, as shown. But this also means that LinkedIn is now able to read the complete content of your emails and also can store the passwords to users' external email accounts. The feature is enough to destroy the security and privacy of your mails. Another point to be noted that, Apple does not provide any APIs or frameworks for developers that would allow this kind of modification of its interface. Instead, LinkedIn is acting as a ' man in the middle ' by inter

Cryptoseal VPN Service shuts down over legal concerns after Lavabit case

Oct 23, 2013
Yet another American Internet privacy service has bitten the dust, prompted by fears about broad government surveillance demands. CryptoSeal, a Virtual private network (VPN) based in California has decided to shutter its privacy-conscious service rather than hand over its encryption keys to the U.S. Government. VPNs are secure tunnels to the Internet that allow users to mask their location, defeat regional restrictions, stay safe over public Wi-Fi connections, and maintain at least a modicum of privacy online. CryptoSeal is the latest company to voluntarily shut down its service after the U.S. Government's legal action against Lavabit, an email service used by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. " With immediate effect as of this notice, CryptoSeal Privacy, our consumer VPN service, is terminated, " a notice reads on the company's website. " All cryptographic keys used in the operation of the service have been zerofilled...all records created incidental

Simple, but Critical vulnerability in Verizon Portal revealed users' SMS History

Oct 21, 2013
A Security researcher discovered a critical privacy vulnerability on Verizon Wireless's Web-based customer portal that allows anyone to download user's SMS History and Numbers of other users he communicated with. Back in August, researcher ' Cody Collier ' found that a simple URL exploit could allow any subscriber to extract data using ' Download to SpreadSheet' function. To exploit, an attacker only needs to modify the subscriber's phone number in the URL and this would give an attacker access to the SMS history to the targeted account. https://wbillpay.verizonwireless.com/vzw/accountholder/unbilledusage/UnbilledMessaging.action?d-455677-e=2&1548506v4671=1&mtn= 999999999 Where variable ' mtn ' within the URL defines the mobile number and an attacker just need to modify this. " Message details consist of: Date, Time, To, From, and Direction an SMS or MMS took place. With no user interaction, all that was required was a subscriber's phone nu

New Zealand Government Forcing Internet Companies and Network Operators to provide Interception capability

Oct 15, 2013
In August the New Zealand has passed a bill that radically expands the powers of  The Government Communications Security Bureau ( GCSB ), an intelligence agency of the New Zealand government, equivalent of the National Security Agency ( NSA ). The bill demands the companies and other network operators like Facebook, Microsoft, Google and Yahoo must allow New Zealand spy agencies a certain path to monitor user communications, but it will also violate the rights of New Zealand citizens. Today afternoon the controversial of Telecommunications ( Interception Capability and Security) Bill made progress in the House in its Second Reading. A number of minor changes were made in select committee. Labour Leader David Cunliffe said his party continued to strongly oppose the legislation as it did not provide protection for the privacy of communications from spying by the state. In a supplementary order paper to the Telecommunications Bill , Amy Adams is proposing to dump Clau

Facebook Graph Search becomes more powerful than ever, Review your Privacy Settings again

Oct 04, 2013
Facebook Graph Search is more powerful than ever, has been updated to allow people to search in greater depth on Facebook.  Facebook expanded its Graph Search to include posts and status updates, which means everything you've been posting is way easier to find than ever before. " Now you will be able to search for status updates, photo captions, check-ins and comments to find things shared with you ," says Facebook . For example, you could enter " Posts by my friends from last month ," or " Posts written at The White House " in order to find that specific information. Facebook's search is increasing in power much faster than people are realizing that their life is being digitally sorted and indexed. As Facebook widens its scope of searchable information, questions about privacy continue to rise. Facebook users should check their privacy settings if they want to limit the people who can search every post or status update they have ev

Last week Apple releases the iPhone 5S  with Touch ID , a fingerprint-scanning feature, promoted by the company as " Your fingerprint is one of the best passwords in the world ". Just after the launch of iOS7 , Hackers around the world come up with a series of security issues and privacy concerns. One of the most embarrassing hack released yesterday, when a group of German Hackers fooled the iPhone 's biometric fingerprint security by just using a high resolution photo of someone's fingerprint. Now, We all are aware about many secret surveillance projects of NSA like PRISM , where U.S. government is collecting data from these Internet companies including - Apple. Apple claimed that, iPhone will never upload fingerprints to their server, but can we believe them anymore ? It is already proven that, During Surveillance operations and for Backup purpose, Smartphone applications can upload anything from your device to their online servers without any

Sep 10, 2013
As we reported yesterday that, your Smartphone is a goldmine for the US National Security Agency (NSA), they have the full access to your Data available on your Smartphones including Android , iPhone and Blackberry. But among other Smartphones,  iPhone apparently is the most popular with the National Security Agency. Another NSA presentation leaked by NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden and published by German paper Der Spiegel , describing Steve Jobs as the real Big Brother and iPhone buyers as the "zombies" . By cracking mobile operating systems and eavesdropping on mobile communications, the data obtained in this way includes contacts, call lists, SMS traffic, notes and location information. " Such as a iPhone picture of a foreign government official who took selfies while watching TV, and a picture of an unknown man, apparently an Afghani fighter, in the mountains of Afghanistan. And remember the iPhone's location bug? That enabled tracking of people over exten

Can we Trust Google ? Company Speeding up Strong Encryption Program in response to NSA surveillance

Sep 07, 2013
Trust is something that's earned, not given. We trusted tech companies with our data because they promised to keep it secure. That trust was called into question after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed that NSA is snooping on us with the help of same tech companies. Today Google announced that they have accelerated their efforts towards encrypting the information that has been flowing through its data centers across the world to thwart snooping by NSA and intelligence agencies, but do can you Trust Google and Other Internet Companies now ? " It's an arms race ," Eric Grosse, Google's vice president for security engineering, tells WP . " We see these government agencies as among the most skilled players in this game. " Google officials declined to provide details on the cost of its new encryption efforts, the numbers of data centers involved, or the exact technology used. According to the report, encrypted information would

Anonymity Tool Tor gains more than 1.2 Million new users since NSA PRISM scandal

Aug 31, 2013
Since Snowden came forward with details about the NSA's PRISM program in June, web users concerned about online privacy are increasingly turning toward privacy tools to protect their online data. U.S. Government project PRISM allows the government to tap phone calls, email, and web browsing of any citizen without a warrant. New metrics from The Tor Project show that, the usage of Tor Browser is increasing day by day due to the fact that internet users are getting more and more inclined in keeping their online activity isolated from internet surveillance programs like US Prism. Tor was launched in 2004 and developed by the U.S. Navy, is used by governments, activists, journalists and dissidents to conceal their online activities from prying eyes. The TOR online anonymity service has exploded since early June, up more than 100 percent, from just over 500,000 global users to more than 1.2 million. Of those 600,000 new users, roughly ten percent are from the

Apple's new technology will allow government to control your iPhone remotely

Aug 29, 2013
Recently, The Social Media is buzzing over reports that Apple has invented a new technology that now can Switch off iPhone Camera and Wi-Fi, when entering a 'sensitive area'. Technology would broadcast a signal to automatically shut down Smartphone features, or even the entire phone. Yes ! It's true, On June 2008 - Apple filed a patent ( U.S. Patent No. 8,254,902 ) - titles " Apparatus and methods for enforcement of policies upon a wireless device " that defines the ability of U.S. Government to remotely disable certain functions of a device without user consent. All they need to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed sensitive and needs to be protected from externalities. Is it not a shame that you can't take a photo of the police officer beating a man in the street because your oppressive government remotely disabled your Smartphone camera? Civil liberties campaigners fear it could be misused by the authorities to silence 'awkward citi

Google: Gmail Users Should Have No Expectation of Privacy

Aug 15, 2013
Edward Snowden has done enough to highlight how vulnerable electronic communications are to surveillance and Gmail users should not expect privacy from Google. Lavabit is no more. Silent Circle has shuttered its secure email service. A California watchdog group says  that Gmail users now have a reason to pause before hitting " send ". California-based Consumer Watchdog, which claims Google made a "stunning admission" in a recent legal brief when the tech giant wrote that people should expect the contents of their emails to be perused. " Google has finally admitted they don't respect privacy, " he said in a statement . " People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents' privacy, don't use Gmail. " " Just as a sender of a letter to a business colleague cannot be surprised that the recipient's assistant opens the letter, people who use web-based email today cannot be surprised if their emails are processed by the recipient

On 10th Anniversary 'The Pirate Bay' Releases Its Own uncensored Web Browser 'PirateBrowser'

Aug 10, 2013
No matter how much effort an ISP puts in or the government does, censorship always gets a backdoor . One of the biggest Controversial File Sharing site ' The Pirate Bay ' is censored in various capacities in some countries around the world, but Pirate Bay is celebrating its 10th birthday in Stockholm sponsored by an energy drinks maker. On their 10th anniversary the site is releasing its " Pirate Browser ," a custom Firefox browser that skirts Internet censorship and lets you access the Pirate Bay from anywhere.  However, Its founders recently served jail time for their activities, with one of the founders going back to prison in an unrelated Swedish hacking case. PirateBrowser is meant to focus more on unrestricted access to the Internet than it is about being able to download new episode of Breaking Bad without paying for them, but one tends to be a function of the other. According to the Pirate Browser website, It's a customized Firefox 23 and inclu
