Microsoft Reveals macOS Vulnerability that Bypasses Privacy Controls in Safari Browser

Oct 18, 2024 Threat Intelligence / Browser Security
Microsoft has disclosed details about a now-patched security flaw in Apple's Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC) framework in macOS that has likely come under exploitation to get around a user's privacy preferences and access data. The shortcoming, codenamed HM Surf by the tech giant, is tracked as CVE-2024-44133 (CVSS score: 5.5). It was addressed by Apple as part of macOS Sequoia 15 by removing the vulnerable code. HM Surf "involves removing the TCC protection for the Safari browser directory and modifying a configuration file in the said directory to gain access to the user's data, including browsed pages, the device's camera, microphone, and location, without the user's consent," Jonathan Bar Or of the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team said . Microsoft said the new protections are limited to Apple's Safari browser, and that it's working with other major browser vendors to further explore the benefits of hardening local configuration file...

Winter is Coming for CentOS 8

Oct 29, 2021
Winter is Coming for CentOS 8—but here is how you can enjoy your holidays after all. The server environment is complex and if you're managing thousands of Linux servers, the last thing you want is for an operating system vendor to do something completely unexpected. That is exactly what Red Hat, the parent company of the CentOS Project, did when it suddenly announced a  curtailment of support for CentOS 8  – sending thousands of organizations scrambling for an alternative. In this article, we'll review what happened with CentOS 8 and what it means for users who have already upgraded from CentOS release 7 to release 8. We'll also look at your alternatives for replacing CentOS 8. Finally, we'll do a review of your other option: choosing extended support. Extended lifecycle support (ELS) can reduce the pressure to decide on alternative distribution and it may well be the most practical route for many CentOS 8 users. Official support is critical The difficulties arou...

New "Brash" Exploit Crashes Chromium Browsers Instantly with a Single Malicious URL

New "Brash" Exploit Crashes Chromium Browsers Instantly with a Single Malicious URL

Oct 30, 2025 Browser Security / Vulnerability
A severe vulnerability disclosed in Chromium's Blink rendering engine can be exploited to crash many Chromium-based browsers within a few seconds. Security researcher Jose Pino, who disclosed details of the flaw, has codenamed it Brash . "It allows any Chromium browser to collapse in 15-60 seconds by exploiting an architectural flaw in how certain DOM operations are managed," Pino said in a technical breakdown of the shortcoming. At its core, Brash stems from the lack of rate limiting on " document.title " API updates, which, in turn, allows for bombarding millions of [document object model] mutations per second, causing the web browser to crash, as well as degrade system performance as a result of devoting CPU resources to this process. The attack plays out in three steps - Hash generation or preparation phase, where the attacker preloads into memory 100 unique hexadecimal strings of 512 characters that act as a seed for the browser tab title changes ...
Banking Trojans Target Latin America and Europe Through Google Cloud Run

Banking Trojans Target Latin America and Europe Through Google Cloud Run

Feb 26, 2024 Cyber Attack / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers are warning about a spike in email phishing campaigns that are weaponizing the Google Cloud Run service to deliver various banking trojans such as  Astaroth  (aka Guildma),  Mekotio , and  Ousaban  (aka Javali) to targets across Latin America (LATAM) and Europe. "The infection chains associated with these malware families feature the use of malicious Microsoft Installers (MSIs) that function as droppers or downloaders for the final malware payload(s)," Cisco Talos researchers  disclosed  last week. The high-volume malware distribution campaigns, observed since September 2023, have employed the same storage bucket within Google Cloud for propagation, suggesting potential links between the threat actors behind the distribution campaigns. Google Cloud Run is a  managed compute platform  that enables users to run frontend and backend services, batch jobs, deploy websites and applications, and queue processing workloa...

Update Chrome Now: Google Releases Patch for Actively Exploited Zero-Day Vulnerability

Sep 28, 2023 Zero Day / Vulnerability
Google on Wednesday rolled out fixes to address a new actively exploited zero-day in the Chrome browser. Tracked as  CVE-2023-5217 , the high-severity vulnerability has been described as a  heap-based buffer overflow  in the VP8 compression format in  libvpx , a free software  video codec  library from Google and the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). Exploitation of such buffer overflow flaws can result in program crashes or execution of arbitrary code, impacting its availability and integrity. Clément Lecigne of Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has been credited with discovering and reporting the flaw on September 25, 2023, with fellow researcher Maddie Stone  noting  on X (formerly Twitter) that it has been abused by a commercial spyware vendor to target high-risk individuals. No additional details have been disclosed by the tech giant other than to acknowledge that it's "aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-5217 exists in the wild." T...
