Critical Flaw in Cisco Secure Email and Web Manager Lets Attackers Bypass Authentication

Critical Flaw in Cisco Secure Email and Web Manager Lets Attackers Bypass Authentication

Jun 16, 2022
Cisco on Wednesday rolled out fixes to address a critical security flaw affecting Email Security Appliance (ESA) and Secure Email and Web Manager that could be exploited by an unauthenticated, remote attacker to sidestep authentication. Assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2022-20798 , the bypass vulnerability is rated 9.8 out of a maximum of 10 on the CVSS scoring system and stems from improper authentication checks when an affected device uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol ( LDAP ) for external authentication. "An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by entering a specific input on the login page of the affected device," Cisco noted in an advisory. "A successful exploit could allow the attacker to gain unauthorized access to the web-based management interface of the affected device." The flaw, which it said was identified during the resolution of a technical assistance center (TAC) case, impacts ESA and Secure Email and Web Manager running vulnerable ...

ProtonMail Logs Activist's IP Address With Authorities After Swiss Court Order

Sep 06, 2021
End-to-end encrypted email service provider ProtonMail has  drawn   criticism  after it ceded to a legal request and shared the IP address of anti-gentrification activists with law enforcement authorities, leading to their arrests in France. The Switzerland-based company said it received a "legally binding order from the Swiss Federal Department of Justice" related to a collective called Youth for Climate, which it was "obligated to comply with," compelling it to handover the IP address and information related to the type of device used by the group to access the ProtonMail account. On its website, ProtonMail  advertises  that: "No personal information is required to create your secure email account. By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. Your privacy comes first." Protonmail Homepage Despite its no IP logs claims, the company acknowledged that while it's illegal for the company to abide by req...

Want to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management? Start Here!

Dec 05, 2024Attack Surface / Exposure Management
Vulnerability Management (VM) has long been a cornerstone of organizational cybersecurity. Nearly as old as the discipline of cybersecurity itself, it aims to help organizations identify and address potential security issues before they become serious problems. Yet, in recent years, the limitations of this approach have become increasingly evident.  At its core, Vulnerability Management processes remain essential for identifying and addressing weaknesses. But as time marches on and attack avenues evolve, this approach is beginning to show its age. In a recent report, How to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management (Gartner, How to Grow Vulnerability Management Into Exposure Management, 8 November 2024, Mitchell Schneider Et Al.), we believe Gartner® addresses this point precisely and demonstrates how organizations can – and must – shift from a vulnerability-centric strategy to a broader Exposure Management (EM) framework. We feel it's more than a worthwhile read an...

Gmail for iOS Adds Anti-Phishing Feature that Warns of Suspicious Links

Gmail for iOS Adds Anti-Phishing Feature that Warns of Suspicious Links

Aug 14, 2017
Phishing — is an older style of cyber-attack but remains one of the most common and efficient attack vectors for attackers, as a majority of banking malware and various ransomware attacks begin with a user clicking on a malicious link or opening a dangerous attachment in an email. Phishing has evolved than ever before in the past few years – which is why it remains one of those threats that we have been combating for many years. We have seen phishing campaigns that are so convincing and effective that even tech-savvy people can be tricked into giving away their credentials to hackers. And some that are " almost impossible to detect " and used to trick even the most careful users on the Internet. To help combat this issue, Google has introduced a security defence for it's over a billion users that will help users weed out phishing emails from their Gmail inbox. Google has rolled out new anti-phishing security checks for its Gmail app for iPhone users that will...
Lavabit — Encrypted Email Service Once Used by Snowden, Is Back

Lavabit — Encrypted Email Service Once Used by Snowden, Is Back

Jan 21, 2017
Texas-based Encrypted Email Service ' Lavabit ,' that was forced to shut down in 2013 after not complying with a court order demanding access to SSL keys to snoop on Edward Snowden's emails , is relaunching on Friday. Lavabit CEO Ladar Levison had custody of the service's SSL encryption key that could have helped the government obtain Snowden's password. Although the FBI insisted it was only after Snowden's account, that was the key to the kingdom that would have helped the FBI agents obtain other users' credentials as well. But rather than complying with the federal request that could compromise the communications of all of its customers, Levison preferred to shut down his encrypted email service, leaving its 410,000 users unable to access their email accounts. Now, Levison has announced that he is reviving Lavabit with a new architecture that fixes the SSL problem — which according to him, was the biggest threat — and includes other privacy-enhancin...

Privatoria — Protect Your Privacy Online with Fast and Encrypted VPN Service

Nov 04, 2016
Today, most of you surf the web unaware of the fact that websites collect your data and track your locations and makes millions by sharing your search histories, location data, and buying habits with advertisers and marketers. And if this isn't enough, there are hackers and cyber criminals out there who have the ability to easily steal your sensitive and personal data from the ill-equipped websites. In short, the bitter truth is that you have no or very little online privacy. To resolve this issue, you need a Virtual Private Network (VPN). If you are worried about online Privacy and have not thought about using a VPN, it might be time to get one. But, the question is: What are the best anonymous VPN services? Unfortunately, not all VPNs are as anonymous as they claim to be. Some VPN services keep extensive logs of their users' browsing activities, including IP-addresses for weeks, which nullify the point of using a VPN for privacy. Want Privacy While You Surf...

What is SMTP STS? How It improves Email Security for StartTLS?

Mar 24, 2016
Despite so many messaging apps, Email is still one of the widely used and popular ways to communicate in this digital age. But are your Emails secure? We are using email services for decades, but the underlying 1980s transport protocol used to send emails, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), is ancient and lacks the ability to secure your email communication entirely. However, to overcome this problem, SMTP STARTTLS was invented in 2002 as a way to upgrade an insecure connection to a secure connection using TLS. But, STARTTLS was susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks and encryption downgrades. But worry not. A new security feature is on its way!!! SMTP STS: An Effort to Make Email More Secure Top email providers, namely Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Comcast, LinkedIn, and 1&1 Mail & Media Development, have joined forces to develop a new email standard that makes sure the emails you send are going through an encrypted channel and cannot be sniffed. Dubbed SMT...

Google's Devices and Activity Dashboard — A New Account Security Wizard

Nov 25, 2014
We access our Google account from so many devices that we our self forget on how many devices our account is still connected and perhaps we don't use that device anymore. To make this problem easy for you, Google has come up with its new security dashboard which will help you keep better control over the devices that can access your account. The Internet giant on Monday launched a new " Devices and Activity dashboard " with additional insight over the devices which will allow Google Apps users to identify every single active device that has been used to access their account in the last 28 days as well as those currently signed in. Users will now be able to monitor a comprehensive set of details including the last time their account was accessed, location from where their account was accessed, as well as the web browser that was used to open their account. Eran Feigenbaum , security director at the Google for Work team, said admins could quickly change pass...

Mozilla Thunderbird vulnerability allows hackers to Insert malicious code into Emails

Jan 28, 2014
Do you use Thunderbird , a free; open-source; cross-platform application for managing email and news feeds? According to a Pakistani Security Researcher from Vulnerability-Lab, a flaw gives an attacker the ability to run code on a user's machine. Mozilla Thunderbird 17.0.6 email application is vulnerable to critical validation and filter bypass vulnerability, enables an attacker to bypass the filter that prevents HTML tags from being used in messages. According to a Security Advisory released by Vulnerability-Lab , the flaw resides in Mozilla's Gecko engine. During the testing, the researchers found many java script errors which gave the researcher much hope in believing that the application might actually be vulnerable. By default, HTML tags like <script> and <iframe> are blocked in Thunderbird and get filtered immediately upon insertion. However, while drafting a new email message, attackers can easily bypass the current input filters by encoding...

'Dark Mail Alliance', Future of surveillance proof email technology

Oct 31, 2013
Yesterday I learned about  ' Dark Mail Alliance ', where  Lavabit , reportedly an email provider for NSA leaker Edward Snowden and Silent Circle comes together to create a surveillance-proof email technology. Ladar Levison at Lavabit and Silent Circle CEO Mike Janke, Founders of two e-mail services that recently shut down amid government efforts to nab encryption keys, as well as the larger revelations regarding the NSA's surveillance efforts. The newly developed technology has been designed to look just like ordinary email, with an interface that includes all the usual folders i.e. inbox, sent mail, and drafts. But where it differs is that it applies peer-to-peer encryption not only to the body of the digital missive, but also to its metadata (To:, From: and Subject fields) that third parties are most likely to collect. The encryption, based on a Silent Circle instant messaging protocol called SCIMP and the secret keys generated to encrypt the commun...
