Researchers Discover Critical GitHub CVE-2026-3854 RCE Flaw Exploitable via Single Git Push

Researchers Discover Critical GitHub CVE-2026-3854 RCE Flaw Exploitable via Single Git Push

Apr 28, 2026 Vulnerability / Software Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a critical security vulnerability impacting GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server that could allow an authenticated user to obtain remote code execution with a single "git push" command. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-3854 (CVSS score: 8.7), is a case of command injection that could allow an attacker with push access to a repository to achieve remote code execution on the instance. "During a git push operation, user-supplied push option values were not properly sanitized before being included in internal service headers," per a GitHub advisory for the vulnerability. "Because the internal header format used a delimiter character that could also appear in user input, an attacker could inject additional metadata fields through crafted push option values." Google-owned cloud security firm Wiz has been credited with discovering and reporting the issue on March 4, 2026, with GitHub validating and deployi...

Hijacked npm and Go Packages Use VS Code Tasks to Deploy Python Infostealer

Jun 29, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Cryptocurrency
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered two hijacked npm packages and a cluster of Go packages that are designed to deploy a Python-based information stealer on compromised Windows, Linux, and macOS hosts. "This attack avoids the most common npm execution paths through lifecycle scripts, perhaps in an attempt to remain 'compatible' with npm v12's security hardenings ," JFrog said in a technical analysis. "The package hides execution inside a VS Code task, configured to run automatically when the project folder is opened in VS Code. From there, the malware retrieves encrypted JavaScript from blockchain transaction data, connects to attacker-controlled infrastructure, launches a socket.io backdoor, and eventually deploys a Python infostealer. The names of the identified npm packages are listed below - html-to-gutenberg fetch-page-assets (which lists html-to-gutenberg as a dependency) The two packages were uploaded to npm on May 25, 2026, an...

Dec 19, 2014
Developers running the open source Git code-repository software and tools, like GitHub, on Mac OS X and Windows computers are highly being recommended to install a security update that patches a major security vulnerability in Git clients that leverages an attacker to hijack end-user computers. The critical Git vulnerability affects all versions of the official Git client and all the related software that interacts with Git repositories, including GitHub for Windows and Mac OS X, according to a GitHub advisory published Thursday. HOW GIT BUG WORKS The vulnerability allows an attacker to execute remote code on a client’s computer when the client software accesses Git repositories. The GitHub engineering team gave a detailed explanation on how attackers might exploit the vulnerability: "An attacker can craft a malicious Git tree that will cause Git to overwrite its own .git/config file when cloning or checking out a repository, leading to arbitrary command execution...

Npm Package Targeting GitHub-Owned Repositories Flagged as Red Team Exercise

Npm Package Targeting GitHub-Owned Repositories Flagged as Red Team Exercise

Nov 11, 2025 Software Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a malicious npm package named "@acitons/artifact" that typosquats the legitimate " @actions/artifact " package with the intent to target GitHub-owned repositories. "We think the intent was to have this script execute during a build of a GitHub-owned repository, exfiltrate the tokens available to the build environment, and then use those tokens to publish new malicious artifacts as GitHub," Veracode said in an analysis. The cybersecurity company said it observed six versions of the package – from 4.0.12 to 4.0.17 – that incorporated a post-install hook to download and run malware. That said, the latest version available for download from npm is 4.0.10, indicating that the threat actor behind the package, blakesdev , has removed all the offending versions. The package was first uploaded on October 29, 2025, and has since accrued 31,398 weekly downloads. In total, it has been downloaded 47,405 times , according...

Confirmed—Microsoft Buys GitHub For $7.5 Billion

Jun 04, 2018
Here's the biggest news of the week—Microsoft has reportedly acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion. For those unaware, GitHub is a popular code repository hosting service that allows developers to host their projects, documentation, and code in the cloud using the popular Git source management system, invented in 2005 by Linux founder Linus Torvalds. GitHub is used by many developers and big tech companies including Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and IBM to store their corporate code and privately collaborate on software, but Microsoft is one of the top contributors to the web-hosting service. Microsoft has uploaded several of its most important projects, including PowerShell , the .NET framework, and the Microsoft Edge JavaScript engine , to the website under open source licenses. Microsoft also partnered with Canonical to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10 . Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that GitHub opted to sell to Microsoft in part because it was impr...

Coinbase Initially Targeted in GitHub Actions Supply Chain Attack; 218 Repositories' CI/CD Secrets Exposed

Mar 23, 2025 Supply Chain / Vulnerability
The supply chain attack involving the GitHub Action "tj-actions/changed-files" started as a highly-targeted attack against one of Coinbase's open-source projects, before evolving into something more widespread in scope. "The payload was focused on exploiting the public CI/CD flow of one of their open source projects – agentkit, probably with the purpose of leveraging it for further compromises," Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said in a report. "However, the attacker was not able to use Coinbase secrets or publish packages." The incident came to light on March 14, 2025, when it was found that "tj-actions/changed-files" was compromised to inject code that leaked sensitive secrets from repositories that ran the workflow. It has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2025-30066 (CVSS score: 8.6). According to Endor Labs, 218 GitHub repositories are estimated to have exposed their secrets due to the supply chain attack, and a majority of the leak...

GitHub Breached — Employee Device Hack Led to Exfiltration of 3,800+ Internal Repos

May 20, 2026 Malware / Cloud Security
GitHub on Tuesday said it's investigating unauthorized access to its internal repositories after the notorious threat actor known as TeamPCP listed the platform's source code and internal organizations for sale on a cybercrime forum. "While we currently have no evidence of impact to customer information stored outside of GitHub's internal repositories (such as our customers' enterprises, organizations, and repositories), we are closely monitoring our infrastructure for follow-on activity," the Microsoft-owned subsidiary said . The company also noted that it will notify customers via established incident response and notification channels if any impact is discovered. The development comes after TeamPCP, a threat actor behind a string of software supply chain attacks targeting open-source packages, listed GitHub's source code for sale for an asking price of no less than $50,000. The alleged data dump is said to include about 4,000 repositories. ...

200+ Trojanized GitHub Repositories Found in Campaign Targeting Gamers and Developers

Jun 20, 2025 Malware / Software Security
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new campaign in which the threat actors have published more than 67 GitHub repositories that claim to offer Python-based hacking tools, but deliver trojanized payloads instead. The activity, codenamed Banana Squad by ReversingLabs, is assessed to be a continuation of a rogue Python campaign that was identified in 2023 as targeting the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository with bogus packages that were downloaded over 75,000 times and came with information-stealing capabilities on Windows systems. The findings build on a previous report from the SANS's Internet Storm Center in November 2024 that detailed a supposed "steam-account-checker" tool hosted on GitHub, which incorporated stealthy features to download additional Python payloads that can inject malicious code into the Exodus cryptocurrency wallet app and harvest sensitive data to an external server ("dieserbenni[.]ru"). Further analysis of the repository a...

'Stargazer Goblin' Creates 3,000 Fake GitHub Accounts for Malware Spread

Jul 29, 2024 Malware / Network Security
A threat actor known as Stargazer Goblin has set up a network of inauthentic GitHub accounts to fuel a Distribution-as-a-Service (DaaS) that propagates a variety of information-stealing malware and netting them $100,000 in illicit profits over the past year. The network, which comprises over 3,000 accounts on the cloud-based code hosting platform, spans thousands of repositories that are used to share malicious links or malware, per Check Point, which has dubbed it "Stargazers Ghost Network." Some of the malware families propagated using this method include Atlantida Stealer, Rhadamanthys, RisePro, Lumma Stealer, and RedLine, with the bogus accounts also engaged in starring, forking, watching, and subscribing to malicious repositories to give them a veneer of legitimacy. The network is believed to have been active since August 2022 in some preliminary form, although an advertisement for the DaaS wasn't spotted in the dark until early July 2023. "Threat actors no...

Mini Shai-Hulud Worm Compromises TanStack, Mistral AI, Guardrails AI & More Packages

May 12, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
TeamPCP , the threat actor behind the recentsupply chain attack spree, has been linked to the compromise of the npm and PyPI packages from TanStack, UiPath, Mistral AI, OpenSearch, and Guardrails AI as part of a fresh Mini Shai-Hulud campaign. The affected npm packages have been modified to include an obfuscated JavaScript file ("router_init.js") that's designed to profile the execution environment and launch a comprehensive credential stealer capable of targeting cloud providers, cryptocurrency wallets, AI tools, messaging apps, and CI systems, including Github Actions, multiple reports from Aikido Security , Endor Labs , SafeDep , Socket , StepSecurity , and Snyk show. The data is exfiltrated to the "filev2.getsession[.]org" domain. Using Session Protocol infrastructure is a deliberate attempt on the part of the attackers to evade detection, as the domain is unlikely to be blocked within enterprise environments, given that it belongs to a decentralize...

Hackers Abusing GitHub to Evade Detection and Control Compromised Hosts

Dec 19, 2023 Software Security / Threat intelligence
Threat actors are increasingly making use of GitHub for malicious purposes through novel methods, including abusing secret Gists and issuing malicious commands via git commit messages. "Malware authors occasionally place their samples in services like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Discord to host second stage malware and sidestep detection tools," ReversingLabs researcher Karlo Zanki  said  in a report shared with The Hacker News. "But lately, we have observed the increasing use of the GitHub open-source development platform for hosting malware." Legitimate public services are  known  to be  used  by  threat actors  for hosting malware and acting as  dead drop resolvers  to fetch the actual command-and-control (C2) address. While using public sources for C2 does not make them immune to takedowns, they do offer the benefit of allowing threat actors to easily create attack infrastructure that's both inexpensive and reliable. ...

Hackers Can Abuse Legitimate GitHub Codespaces Feature to Deliver Malware

Jan 17, 2023 Threat Response / Malware
New research has found that it is possible for threat actors to abuse a legitimate feature in GitHub Codespaces to deliver malware to victim systems. GitHub Codespaces  is a cloud-based configurable development environment that allows users to debug, maintain, and commit changes to a given codebase from a web browser or via an integration in Visual Studio Code. It also comes with a port forwarding feature that makes it possible to access a web application that's running on a particular port within the codespace directly from the browser on a local machine for testing and debugging purposes. "You can also forward a port manually, label forwarded ports, share forwarded ports with members of your organization, share forwarded ports publicly, and add forwarded ports to the codespace configuration," GitHub  explains  in its documentation. It's  important  to note here that any forwarded port that's made public will also permit any party with knowledge of the UR...

Password-Guessing Was Used to Hack Gentoo Linux Github Account

Password-Guessing Was Used to Hack Gentoo Linux Github Account

Jul 05, 2018
Maintainers of the Gentoo Linux distribution have now revealed the impact and "root cause" of the attack that saw unknown hackers taking control of its GitHub account last week and modifying the content of its repositories and pages. The hackers not only managed to change the content in compromised repositories but also locked out Gentoo developers from their GitHub organisation. As a result of the incident, the developers were unable to use GitHub for five days. What Went Wrong? Gentoo developers have revealed that the attackers were able to gain administrative privileges for its Github account, after guessing the account password. The organisation could have been saved if it was using a two-factor authentication, which requires an additional passcode besides the password in order to gain access to the account. "The attacker gained access to a password of an organization administrator. Evidence collected suggests a password scheme where disclosure on on...

Microsoft Fixes One-Click GitHub Dev Attack That Let Attackers Steal OAuth Tokens

Jun 03, 2026 Vulnerability / Software Development
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a one-click attack via Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code) that makes it possible to steal a user's GitHub token. "Just by clicking a link, it's possible for an attacker to steal a GitHub token that can read and write to your repos, including private ones," security researcher Ammar Askar said . GitHub supports a feature called GitHub.dev that runs as a lightweight web-based source code editor in the web browser's sandbox by launching a VS Code environment. It allows users to send pull requests and make commits. "This functionality is achieved by github.com POSTing over an OAuth token to github.dev that allows it to interact with GitHub on your behalf," Askar said. "The token is not scoped to the particular repo you interacted with, meaning it has full access to every other repo that you have access to." In a nutshell, the vulnerability allows attackers to install malicious VS Code extensio...

Malicious KICS Docker Images and VS Code Extensions Hit Checkmarx Supply Chain

Apr 22, 2026 Cloud Security / Software Security
Cybersecurity researchers have warned of malicious images pushed to the official " checkmarx/kics " Docker Hub repository. In an alert published today, software supply chain security company Socket revealed that unknown threat actors managed to have overwritten existing tags, including v2.1.20 and alpine, while also introducing a new v2.1.21 tag that does not correspond to an official release. The Docker repository has been archived as of writing. "Analysis of the poisoned image indicates that the bundled KICS binary was modified to include data collection and exfiltration capabilities not present in the legitimate version," Socket said. "The malware could generate an uncensored scan report, encrypt it, and send it to an external endpoint, creating a serious risk for teams using KICS to scan infrastructure-as-code files that may contain credentials or other sensitive configuration data." Further analysis of the incident has uncovered that related Ch...
