Beijing - A Chinese man cited by a US security firm as being linked to cyberspying on Western oil companies said on Friday his company rents server space to hundreds of hackers. The disclosure highlighted the pervasiveness of both professional and amateur hacking in China, a leading source of Internet crime. But it also left open the possibility that the hackers cited in a report Thursday by McAfee might be non-Chinese who concealed their identities by routing thefts through computers in China. The man cited by McAfee, Song Zhiyue, is a salesman for a company in the eastern city of Heze that rents server space. He said he has heard of Chinese hackers targeting US oil companies but he declined to comment on McAfee's report. It said Song provided crucial infrastructure to the hackers but wasn't believed to be the mastermind. “Our company alone has a great number of hackers” as customers, Song said in a telephone interview. “I have several hundred of them among all my customers.”...

Job seekers' identities compromised in massive data breach. The Irish job website RecruitIreland.com was hacked last week, resulting in breached systems and the theft of the credentials of 400,000 users. The website was temporarily taken offline after the breach was discovered last Tuesday. A statement on the website read that the company had informed Britain's Data Protection Commissioner. “The present indicators are that our database was breached to get email addresses and names for spamming,'" the statement read. "We shut down access to the site and database at 2pm and immediately informed the Data Protection Commissioner and the Gardai [Irish police]. "We take this incident and any attempted breach of our database extremely seriously and this is being investigated internally by our own people." Microsoft yesterday accused a former manager of taking hundreds of megabytes of confidential company material when he left the firm for a new position at CRM rival Salesforce.com. In a motion filed with a Washington State Superior Court Thursday, Microsoft alleged that Matt Miszewski, formerly a market development manager in the company's government group, lied about retaining "a large trove of materials -- 600 megabytes of information comprising over 900 separate files (estimated at 25,000 pages)" of proprietary Microsoft information on his personal computer. Late last month, Microsoft sued Miszewski for violating non-compete and confidentiality agreements when he accepted a job as a senior vice president with customer-relationship management (CRM) vendor Salesforce.com. A Chinese technician quoted by U.S. Internet security firm McAfee Inc. as informing that hackers from China had attacked a number of US oil and gas companies over the past years has denied claims attributed to him in the 19-page report released on Thursday. In a telephone interview to the Wall Street Journal, Song Zhiyue, a technician for website hosting company Science & Technology Internet in northeastern Shandong province who has been named in the McAfree report, said, "What? You sure it's my company?" He also reportedly added, he has "no idea at all about hacking attacks on U.S. oil companies." Although McAfee did not name him as one of the hackers, the security firm, which saw Zhiyue as a conduit to the hacking, suspected that he "is aware or has information that can help identify at least some of the individuals." When the Egyptian government decided to flip the switch on its country's Internet on Jan. 27, news of the unprecedented shut down spread rapidly. Rumors that the same thing has happened today in Algeria are unfounded, even though the country has been on the radar for a possible "domino effect" of events in Tunisia and Egypt. Internet intelligence authority Renesys, which confirmed the Egypt outage weeks ago, says in a new blog post that it has no evidence that Algeria's Internet has been shut down. Algeria typically has about 135 routed network prefixes in the global routing table, and our data show that they are all still routed and relatively stable.
