Plenty of people have been targeted by an attack which uses the subject line "Your account has been temporarily limited!" and claims to come from what appears to be an offiicial PayPal address. Well, beware opening the attached reactivation form too quickly because you could be passing your personal information to cybercriminals. Because the emails are bogus, and the headers are forged - all with the intention of stealing information from you. MISSOULA - Univision Computers, a company based in Missoula, is warning people about a fake antivirus alert pop-ups that could not only damage your computer, but could pull personal information from it. The FBI says it's called "scareware" because criminals try to frighten you into buying fake antivirus software with a seemingly genuine security warning. And here's how it works: a pop-up message comes up saying you have a virus. And to fix the problem, all you have to do is install the software. "Frequently they'll ask you for a credit card for payment and promise that they will fix whatever's wrong with your computer. Clients who do that discover that they have a charge on their credit card, their credit card information is out there for the crook who invented the scareware and their computer is often even further infected and sometimes completely disabled," says Penny Lyons, Univision Computers Customer Service Representative. Consumers wary about protecting data stored on their computers should get used to hearing the term "spear phishing." It's the latest and most ingenious method yet to deliver malicious software that gives criminals control of a person's computer, with a tactic that involves developing emails which are personalized, contain nuggets of information familiar to the target, and appear to come from a trusted source. Spear phishing went mainstream over the holiday season when dozens of government employees in the U.S. and other nations were lured into downloading a malicious program. "[It was] essentially a malware-laced email that made it look like a season's greetings from the White House," security blogger Brian Krebs told CBC News. "[The email] invites the folks to download an e-card, essentially a zipped-up executable file that if you run lets the bad guys take control of your system remotely." Last year saw a record-setting number of new threats appear online. In particular, criminals managed to create one-third of all viruses ever seen, 34% of all malware in existence, and 40% of all known fake AV. Those findings come from a study released Wednesday by PandaLabs, the malware research arm of antivirus vendor Panda Security. The firm said it had analyzed 99.4% of the 134 million unique files its systems automatically collected in 2010. Of those files, 60 million were malware -- viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats. The report also found that the volume of new malware created -- about 20 million new strains -- remained roughly constant from 2009 to 2010, while the number of new threats overall increased. Between the beginning and end of 2010, according to PandaLabs, "the average number of new threats created every day has risen from 55,000 to 63,000." In his keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed that Windows 8, the next version of Microsoft's desktop operating system, will be able to run on much smaller mobile devices like phones. He revealed that Windows 8 will support system-on-a-chip (SoC) architectures from the likes of Cambridge-based ARM and Texas Instruments, as well as upcoming SoC systems from Intel and AMD. Traditionally, running Windows applications on mobile devices has required that the application be rewritten specifically to address the mobile form-factor. "It's really all about enabling a new class of hardware," said Ballmer. He said Windows 8, which is expected to be released next year, will support the standard X86 processors but will also be usable on Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments hardware running ARM architecture. Dozens of New Zealand based websites are infected with malicious software which directs users to child abuse material. They are mostly legitimate small business sites which have been hacked to produce links to paedophile pornography. The problem first appeared in Italy but has spread to sites in 30 countries including New Zealand, the US and Australia. Italian police found out about the hacking when a grandmother shopping online clicked on a page on a legitimate business web server. Twenty people have been arrested after being tempted by the link into acquiring child porn. The European Union's law enforcement agency Europol is investigating the hacking. Martin Cocker of internet safety group Netsafe says the child porn peddlers are hacking business sites because more people are shopping online and there is a greater chance they will inadvertently click on the spam News Source : Google

It appeared briefly this week that all DeKalb County's properties were owned by a hacker. The county's property appraisal website was hacked and listed every property owner as "Hacked by Red xD," CEO's spokesman Burke Brennan confirmed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Brennan insisted none of the data, including property values, sales and tax information, was compromised. "No core data was accessed," he said. The county's information technology staff has repaired the site and is now investigating. County officials said they think the suspect is a professional hacker and not an angry taxpayer.
