Hacking Gmail accounts with password reset system vulnerability

Hacking Gmail accounts with password reset system vulnerability

Nov 22, 2013
Oren Hafif , a security researcher has discovered a critical vulnerability in the Password reset process of Google account that allows an attacker to hijack any account. He managed to trick Google users into handing over their passwords via a simple spear-phishing attack by leveraging a number of flaws i.e. Cross-site request forgery (CSRF), and cross-site scripting (XSS), and a flow bypass. In a proof of concept video demonstration, the attacker sends his victim a fake “ Confirm account ownership ” email, claiming to come from Google. The link mention in the mail instructs the recipient to confirm the ownership of the account and urged user to change their password. The link from the email apparently points to a HTTPS  google.com URL, but it actually leads the victim to the attacker’s website because of CSRF attack with a customized email address. The Google HTTPS page will will ask the victim to confirm the ownership by entering his last password and then w...

9 Popular Password Manager Apps Found Leaking Your Secrets

Mar 01, 2017
Is anything safe? It's 2017, and the likely answer is NO. Making sure your passwords are secure is one of the first line of defense – for your computer, email, and information – against hacking attempts, and Password Managers are the one recommended by many security experts to keep all your passwords secure in one place. Password Managers are software that creates complex passwords, stores them and organizes all your passwords for your computers, websites, applications and networks, as well as remember them on your behalf. But what if your Password Managers itself are vulnerable? Well, it's not just an imagination, as a new report has revealed that some of the most popular password managers are affected by critical vulnerabilities that can expose user credentials. The report, published on Tuesday by a group of security experts from TeamSIK of the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology in Germany, revealed that nine of the most popular Android pass...

Four month ago, a massive data breach on the eBay website affected 145 million registered users worldwide after its database was compromised. Meanwhile, another critical vulnerability on the eBay website was reported, allowing an attacker to hijack millions of user accounts in bulk. An Egyptian security researcher ‘ Yasser H. Ali ’ informed The Hacker News about this vulnerability 4 months ago, which could be used by the cyber criminals in the targeted attacks. At that time, Mr.Yasser secretly demonstrated the vulnerability step-by-step to ‘ The Hacker News ’ team and we confirmed - IT WORKS . Since it was not addressed by the eBay security team, we kept the technical details of this vulnerability hidden from our readers. But, as we promised to share the technical details of this interesting flaw, once after eBay team patch it. So, Here we go! What the Zola Hack Can Teach Us About Password Security

What the Zola Hack Can Teach Us About Password Security

Aug 11, 2022
Password security is only as strong as the password itself. Unfortunately, we are often reminded of the danger of weak, reused, and compromised passwords with major cybersecurity breaches that start with stolen credentials. For example, in May 2022, the popular wedding planning site, Zola, was the victim of a significant cybersecurity breach where hackers used an attack known as  credential stuffing . It resulted in fraudulent activity tied to customer accounts. Let's look at the Zola breach and why it emphasizes the need for organizations to bolster their password security and protect against various types of password attacks. What happened with the Zola attack? Instead of going after Zola's core business-critical infrastructure, hackers went after customer accounts with the May attack. Attackers used an age-old technique called  credential stuffing  to compromise several Zola customer accounts. With access to the compromised accounts, they attempted to purchase gift ...
What is AS-REP Roasting attack, really?

What is AS-REP Roasting attack, really?

Sep 02, 2021
Microsoft's Active Directory is  said to be used by 95%  of Fortune 500. As a result, it is a prime target for attackers as they look to gain access to credentials in the organization, as compromised credentials provide one of the easiest ways for hackers to access your data. A key authentication technology that underpins Microsoft Active Directory is Kerberos. Unfortunately, hackers use many different attacks against Active Directory's implementation of the Kerberos authentication protocol. One of those is AS-REP Roasting. So what is AS-REP Roasting, and how can businesses protect themselves? What is Active Directory Kerberos? Kerberos was originally developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and centered around using tickets to establish trust. Microsoft's implementation of Kerberos found in Active Directory is based on Kerberos Network Authentication Service (V5) as defined in  RFC 4120 . However, Microsoft has added to and enhanced Kerberos with ...
How to Hack WiFi Password Easily Using New Attack On WPA/WPA2

How to Hack WiFi Password Easily Using New Attack On WPA/WPA2

Nov 25, 2018
Looking for how to hack WiFi password OR WiFi hacking software? Well, a security researcher has revealed a new WiFi hacking technique that makes it easier for hackers to crack WiFi passwords of most modern routers. Discovered by the lead developer of the popular password-cracking tool Hashcat, Jens 'Atom' Steube, the new WiFi hack works explicitly against WPA/WPA2 wireless network protocols with Pairwise Master Key Identifier (PMKID)-based roaming features enabled. The attack to compromise the WPA/WPA2 enabled WiFi networks was accidentally discovered by Steube while he was analyzing the newly-launched WPA3 security standard . This new WiFi hacking method could potentially allow attackers to recover the Pre-shared Key (PSK) login passwords, allowing them to hack into your Wi-Fi network and eavesdrop on the Internet communications. How to Hack WiFi Password Using PMKID According to the researcher, the previously known WiFi hacking methods require attackers to wai...
Some D-Link and Comba WiFi Routers Leak Their Passwords in Plaintext

Some D-Link and Comba WiFi Routers Leak Their Passwords in Plaintext

Sep 10, 2019
What could be worse than your router leaking its administrative login credentials in plaintext? Cybersecurity researchers from Trustwave's SpiderLabs have discovered multiple security vulnerabilities in some router models from two popular manufacturers—D-Link and Comba Telecom—that involve insecure storage of credentials, potentially affecting every user and system on that network. Researcher Simon Kenin told The Hacker News that he discovered a total of five vulnerabilities—two in a D-Link DSL modem typically installed to connect a home network to an ISP, and three in multiple Comba Telecom WiFi devices. These flaws could potentially allow attackers to change your device settings, extract sensitive information, perform MitM attacks, redirect you to phishing or malicious sites and launch many more types of attacks. "Since your router is the gateway in and out of your entire network it can potentially affect every user and system on that network. An attacker-controlled ...
How Hybrid Password Attacks Work and How to Defend Against Them

How Hybrid Password Attacks Work and How to Defend Against Them

Oct 11, 2024 Phishing Protection / Password Security
Threat actors constantly change tactics to bypass cybersecurity measures, developing innovative methods to steal user credentials. Hybrid password attacks merge multiple cracking techniques to amplify their effectiveness. These combined approaches exploit the strengths of various methods, accelerating the password-cracking process.  In this post, we’ll explore hybrid attacks — what they are and the most common types. We’ll also discuss how your organization can defend against them. The blended approach of hybrid attacks Threat actors are always looking for better, more successful ways to crack passwords — and hybrid attacks allow them to combine two different hacking techniques into a single attack. By integrating attack methodologies, they can take advantage of the strengths associated with each method, increasing their chances of success. And hybrid attacks aren’t just limited to cracking passwords. Cybercriminals regularly combine technical cyberattacks with other tactics, ...

Researcher releases Free Hacking Tool that Can Steal all Your Secrets from Password Manager

Nov 04, 2015
Unless we are a human supercomputer, remembering a different password for every different site is not an easy task. But to solve this problem, there is a growing market of best password manager and lockers, which remembers your password for every single account and simultaneously provides an extra layer of protection by keeping them strong and encrypted. However, it seems to be true only until a hacker released a hacking tool that can silently decrypt and extract all usernames, passwords, as well as notes stored by the popular password manager KeePass . Dubbed KeeFarce , the hacking tool is developed by Kiwi hacker Denis Andzakovic and is available on GitHub  for free download. Hackers can execute KeeFarce on a computer when a user has logged into their KeePass vault, which makes them capable of decrypting the entire password archive and then dumping it to a file that attackers can steal remotely. How Does KeeFarce Work? KeeFarce obtains passwords by l...
