⚡ Weekly Recap: Windows 0-Day, VPN Exploits, Weaponized AI, Hijacked Antivirus and More

Apr 14, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Cybersecurity
Attackers aren't waiting for patches anymore — they are breaking in before defenses are ready. Trusted security tools are being hijacked to deliver malware. Even after a breach is detected and patched, some attackers stay hidden. This week's events show a hard truth: it's not enough to react after an attack. You have to assume that any system you trust today could fail tomorrow. In a world where AI tools can be used against you and ransomware hits faster than ever, real protection means planning for things to go wrong — and still staying in control. Check out this week's update to find important threat news, helpful webinars, useful tools, and tips you can start using right away. ⚡ Threat of the Week Windows 0-Day Exploited for Ransomware Attacks — A security affecting the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) was exploited as a zero-day in ransomware attacks aimed at a small number of targets, Microsoft revealed. The flaw, CVE-2025-29824, is a privilege escalation vulnerabilit...
How to Build a Custom Malware Analysis Sandbox

How to Build a Custom Malware Analysis Sandbox

Mar 24, 2022
Before hunting malware, every researcher needs to find a system where to analyze it. There are several ways to do it: build your own environment or use third-party solutions. Today we will walk through all the steps of creating a custom malware sandbox where you can perform a proper analysis without infecting your computer. And then compare it with a ready-made service. Why do you need a malware sandbox?  A sandbox allows detecting cyber threats and analyzing them safely. All information remains secure, and a suspicious file can't access the system. You can monitor malware processes, identify their patterns and investigate behavior. Before setting up a sandbox, you should have a clear goal of what you want to achieve through the lab.  There are two ways how to organize your working space for analysis: Custom sandbox.  Made from scratch by an analyst on their own, specifically for their needs. A turnkey solution.  A versatile service with a range of configurat...
Chinese Threat Group 'Jewelbug' Quietly Infiltrated Russian IT Network for Months

Chinese Threat Group 'Jewelbug' Quietly Infiltrated Russian IT Network for Months

Oct 15, 2025 Cyber Espionage / Threat Intelligence
A threat actor with ties to China has been attributed to a five-month-long intrusion targeting a Russian IT service provider, marking the hacking group's expansion to the country beyond Southeast Asia and South America. The activity, which took place from January to May 2025, has been attributed by Broadcom-owned Symantec to a threat actor it tracks as Jewelbug , which it said overlaps with clusters known as CL-STA-0049 (Palo Alto Networks Unit 42), Earth Alux (Trend Micro), and REF7707 (Elastic Security Labs). The findings suggest Russia is not off-limits for Chinese cyber espionage operations despite increased "military, economic, and diplomatic" relations between Moscow and Beijing over the years. "Attackers had access to code repositories and software build systems that they could potentially leverage to carry out supply chain attacks targeting the company's customers in Russia," the Symantec Threat Hunter Team said in a report shared with The ...

ShadowCaptcha Exploits WordPress Sites to Spread Ransomware, Info Stealers, and Crypto Miners

Aug 26, 2025 Ransomware / Cryptojacking
A new large-scale campaign has been observed exploiting over 100 compromised WordPress sites to direct site visitors to fake CAPTCHA verification pages that employ the ClickFix social engineering tactic to deliver information stealers, ransomware, and cryptocurrency miners. The large-scale cybercrime campaign, first detected in August 2025, has been codenamed ShadowCaptcha by the Israel National Digital Agency. "The campaign [...] blends social engineering, living-off-the-land binaries (LOLBins), and multi-stage payload delivery to gain and maintain a foothold in targeted systems," researchers Shimi Cohen, Adi Pick, Idan Beit Yosef, Hila David, and Yaniv Goldman said . "The ultimate objectives of ShadowCaptcha are collecting sensitive information through credential harvesting and browser data exfiltration, deploying cryptocurrency miners to generate illicit profits, and even causing ransomware outbreaks." The attacks begin with unsuspecting users visiting a c...
Astaroth Banking Trojan Abuses GitHub to Remain Operational After Takedowns

Astaroth Banking Trojan Abuses GitHub to Remain Operational After Takedowns

Oct 13, 2025 Malware / Financial Security
Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to a new campaign that delivers the Astaroth banking trojan that employs GitHub as a backbone for its operations to stay resilient in the face of infrastructure takedowns. "Instead of relying solely on traditional command-and-control (C2) servers that can be taken down, these attackers are leveraging GitHub repositories to host malware configurations," McAfee Labs researchers Harshil Patel and Prabudh Chakravorty said in a report. "When law enforcement or security researchers shut down their C2 infrastructure, Astaroth simply pulls fresh configurations from GitHub and keeps running." The activity, per the cybersecurity company, is primarily focused on Brazil, although the banking malware is known to target various countries in Latin America, including Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama. This is not the first time Astaroth campaigns have trained t...

China-Linked Ink Dragon Hacks Governments Using ShadowPad and FINALDRAFT Malware

Dec 17, 2025 Malware / Cyber Espionage
The threat actor known as Jewelbug has been increasingly focusing on government targets in Europe since July 2025, even as it continues to attack entities located in Southeast Asia and South America. Check Point Research is tracking the cluster under the name Ink Dragon . It's also referenced by the broader cybersecurity community under the names CL-STA-0049 , Earth Alux , and REF7707 . The China-aligned hacking group is assessed to be active since at least March 2023. "The actor's campaigns combine solid software engineering, disciplined operational playbooks, and a willingness to reuse platform-native tools to blend into normal enterprise telemetry," the cybersecurity company said in a technical breakdown published Tuesday. "This mix makes their intrusions both effective and stealthy." Eli Smadja, group manager of Products R&D at Check Point Software, told The Hacker News that the activity is still ongoing, and that the campaign has "impacte...

CrowdStrike Warns of Phishing Scam Targeting Job Seekers with XMRig Cryptominer

Jan 10, 2025 Cryptomining / Malware
Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike is alerting of a phishing campaign that exploits its own branding to distribute a cryptocurrency miner that's disguised as an employee CRM application as part of a supposed recruitment process. "The attack begins with a phishing email impersonating CrowdStrike recruitment, directing recipients to a malicious website," the company said . "Victims are prompted to download and run a fake application, which serves as a downloader for the cryptominer XMRig." The Texas-based company said it discovered the malicious campaign on January 7, 2025, and that it's "aware of scams involving false offers of employment with CrowdStrike." The phishing email lures recipients by claiming that they have been shortlisted for the next stage of the hiring process for a junior developer role, and that they need to join a call with the recruitment team by downloading a customer relationship management (CRM) tool provided in the embedd...
