Storm-0501 Exploits Entra ID to Exfiltrate and Delete Azure Data in Hybrid Cloud Attacks

Storm-0501 Exploits Entra ID to Exfiltrate and Delete Azure Data in Hybrid Cloud Attacks

Aug 27, 2025 Ransomware / Cloud Security
The financially motivated threat actor known as Storm-0501 has been observed refining its tactics to conduct data exfiltration and extortion attacks targeting cloud environments. "Unlike traditional on-premises ransomware, where the threat actor typically deploys malware to encrypt critical files across endpoints within the compromised network and then negotiates for a decryption key, cloud-based ransomware introduces a fundamental shift," the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "Leveraging cloud-native capabilities, Storm-0501 rapidly exfiltrates large volumes of data, destroys data and backups within the victim environment, and demands ransom -- all without relying on traditional malware deployment." Storm-0501 was first documented by Microsoft almost a year ago, detailing its hybrid cloud ransomware attacks targeting government, manufacturing, transportation, and law enforcement sectors in the U.S., with the thr...

A Microsoft Office 365 Feature Could Help Ransomware Hackers Hold Cloud Files Hostage

Jun 16, 2022
A "dangerous piece of functionality" has been discovered in Microsoft 365 suite that could be potentially abused by a malicious actor to mount attacks on cloud infrastructure and ransom files stored on SharePoint and OneDrive. The cloud ransomware attack makes it possible to launch file-encrypting malware to "encrypt files stored on SharePoint and OneDrive in a way that makes them unrecoverable without dedicated backups or a decryption key from the attacker," Proofpoint  said  in a report published today. The infection sequence can be carried out using a combination of Microsoft APIs, command-line interface (CLI) scripts, and PowerShell scripts, the enterprise security firm added. The attack, at its core, hinges on a Microsoft 365 feature called AutoSave that creates copies of older file versions as and when users make edits to a file stored on OneDrive or SharePoint Online. It commences with gaining unauthorized access to a target user's SharePoint Online...

Microsoft Warns CrowdStrike of Hackers Targeting Azure Cloud Customers

Microsoft Warns CrowdStrike of Hackers Targeting Azure Cloud Customers

Dec 25, 2020
New evidence amidst the ongoing probe into the  espionage campaign  targeting SolarWinds has uncovered an unsuccessful attempt to compromise cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike and access the company's email. The hacking endeavor was reported to the company by Microsoft's Threat Intelligence Center on December 15, which identified a third-party reseller's Microsoft Azure account to be making "abnormal calls" to Microsoft cloud APIs during a 17-hour period several months ago. The undisclosed affected reseller's Azure account handles Microsoft Office licensing for its Azure customers, including CrowdStrike. Although there was an attempt by unidentified threat actors to read the emails, it was ultimately foiled as the firm does not use Microsoft's Office 365 email service, CrowdStrike  said . The incident comes in the wake of the  supply chain attack  of SolarWinds revealed earlier this month, resulting in the deployment of a covert backdoor (aka "Sunbu...

Here's a New Free Tool to Discover Unprotected Cloud Storage Instances

Sep 30, 2021
The IDC cloud security survey 2021 states that as many as 98% of companies were victims of a cloud data breach within the past 18 months. Fostered by the pandemic, small and large organizations from all over the world are migrating their data and infrastructure into a public cloud, while often underestimating novel and cloud-specific security or privacy issues.  Nearly every morning, the headlines are full of sensational news about tens of millions of health or financial records being found in unprotected cloud storage like AWS S3 buckets, Microsoft Azure blobs or another cloud-native storage service by the growing number of smaller cloud security providers.  ImmuniWeb, a rapidly growing application security vendor that offers a variety of AI-driven products, has announced this week that its free  Community Edition , running over 150,000 daily security tests, now has one more online tool –  cloud security test . To check your unprotected cloud storage, you just ...
GCP Cloud Composer Bug Let Attackers Elevate Access via Malicious PyPI Packages

GCP Cloud Composer Bug Let Attackers Elevate Access via Malicious PyPI Packages

Apr 22, 2025 Vulnerability / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a now-patched vulnerability in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) that could have enabled an attacker to elevate their privileges in the Cloud Composer workflow orchestration service that's based on Apache Airflow. "This vulnerability lets attackers with edit permissions in Cloud Composer to escalate their access to the default Cloud Build service account, which has high-level permissions across GCP services like Cloud Build itself, Cloud Storage, and Artifact Registry," Liv Matan, senior security researcher at Tenable, said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The shortcoming has been codenamed ConfusedComposer by the cybersecurity company, describing it as a variant of ConfusedFunction , a privilege escalation vulnerability impacting GCP's Cloud Functions service that an attacker could exploit to access other services and sensitive data in an unauthorized manner. The disclosure comes weeks after Tenable detailed another pr...

Microsoft Joins The Linux Foundation — Turns Love Affair Into a Relationship

Nov 16, 2016
You won't believe your eyes while reading this, but this is true. Microsoft just joined the Linux Foundation as a high-paying Platinum member. Microsoft's love with open source community is embracing as time passes. At its first Connect event in 2013, the company launched Visual Studio 2013. A year later, Microsoft open sourced .NET, and last year, it open sourced the Visual Studio Code Editor, as well. Not just that, Microsoft partnered with Canonical to bring Ubuntu on Windows 10 , worked with FreeBSD to develop a Virtual Machine image for its Azure cloud , and chosen Ubuntu as the OS for its Cloud-based Big Data services. And the big news for this year is… At its 2016 Connect developer event in New York today, Microsoft announced that the company is joining the Linux Foundation as a Platinum member – the highest level of membership, which costs $500,000 annually. Besides this, Microsoft also announced that tech giant Google has also joined on with the indepen...

Hackers Increasingly Abusing Microsoft Graph API for Stealthy Malware Communications

May 03, 2024 Cloud Security / Threat Intelligence
Threat actors have been increasingly weaponizing  Microsoft Graph API  for malicious purposes with the aim of evading detection. This is done to "facilitate communications with command-and-control (C&C) infrastructure hosted on Microsoft cloud services," the Symantec Threat Hunter Team, part of Broadcom,  said  in a report shared with The Hacker News. Since January 2022, multiple nation-state-aligned hacking groups have been observed using Microsoft Graph API for C&C. This includes threat actors tracked as  APT28 ,  REF2924 ,  Red Stinger ,  Flea ,  APT29 , and  OilRig . The first known instance of Microsoft Graph API abuse prior to its wider adoption dates back to June 2021 in connection with an activity cluster dubbed  Harvester  that was found using a custom implant known as Graphon that utilized the API to communicate with Microsoft infrastructure. Symantec said it ...

Researcher Hijacks a Microsoft Service Using Loophole in Azure Cloud Platform

Apr 17, 2019
A cybersecurity professional today demonstrated a long-known unpatched weakness in Microsoft's Azure cloud service by exploiting it to take control over Windows Live Tiles , one of the key features Microsoft built into Windows 8 operating system. Introduced in Windows 8, the Live tiles feature was designed to display content and notifications on the Start screen, allowing users to continuously pull up-to-date information from their favorite apps and websites. To make it easier for websites to offer their content as Live Tiles, Microsoft had a feature available on a subdomain of a separate domain, i.e., " notifications.buildmypinnedsite.com ," that allowed website admins to automatically convert their RSS feeds into a special XML format and use it as a meta tag on their websites. The service, which Microsoft had already shut down, was hosted on its own Azure Cloud platform with the subdomain configured/linked to an Azure account operated by the company. However,...
Generative AI Security: Preventing Microsoft Copilot Data Exposure

Generative AI Security: Preventing Microsoft Copilot Data Exposure

Dec 05, 2023 Data Security / Generative AI
Microsoft Copilot has been called one of the most powerful productivity tools on the planet. Copilot is an AI assistant that lives inside each of your Microsoft 365 apps — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and so on. Microsoft's dream is to take the drudgery out of daily work and let humans focus on being creative problem-solvers. What makes Copilot a different beast than ChatGPT and other AI tools is that it has access to everything you've ever worked on in 365. Copilot can instantly search and compile data from across your documents, presentations, email, calendar, notes, and contacts. And therein lies the problem for information security teams. Copilot can access all the sensitive data that a user can access, which is often far too much. On average, 10% of a company's M365 data is open to all employees. Copilot can also rapidly generate  net new  sensitive data that must be protected. Prior to the AI revolution, humans' ability to create and share data ...

Microsoft accuses former manager of stealing 600 MB of confidential docs !

Feb 13, 2011
Microsoft yesterday accused a former manager of taking hundreds of megabytes of confidential company material when he left the firm for a new position at CRM rival Salesforce.com. In a motion filed with a Washington State Superior Court Thursday, Microsoft alleged that Matt Miszewski, formerly a market development manager in the company's government group, lied about retaining "a large trove of materials -- 600 megabytes of information comprising over 900 separate files (estimated at 25,000 pages)" of proprietary Microsoft information on his personal computer. Late last month, Microsoft sued Miszewski for violating non-compete and confidentiality agreements when he accepted a job as a senior vice president with customer-relationship management (CRM) vendor Salesforce.com. The state court then issued a temporary restraining order that blocked Miszewski from working at Salesforce.com, engaging in any competitive activities or providing services to any of his former cust...

Confirmed—Microsoft Buys GitHub For $7.5 Billion

Jun 04, 2018
Here's the biggest news of the week—Microsoft has reportedly acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion. For those unaware, GitHub is a popular code repository hosting service that allows developers to host their projects, documentation, and code in the cloud using the popular Git source management system, invented in 2005 by Linux founder Linus Torvalds. GitHub is used by many developers and big tech companies including Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and IBM to store their corporate code and privately collaborate on software, but Microsoft is one of the top contributors to the web-hosting service. Microsoft has uploaded several of its most important projects, including PowerShell , the .NET framework, and the Microsoft Edge JavaScript engine , to the website under open source licenses. Microsoft also partnered with Canonical to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10 . Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that GitHub opted to sell to Microsoft in part because it was impr...

Google Exposes GLASSBRIDGE: A Pro-China Influence Network of Fake News Sites

Nov 23, 2024 Cloud Security / Threat Intelligence
Government agencies and non-governmental organizations in the United States have become the target of a nascent China state threat actor known as Storm-2077. The adversary, believed to be active since at least January 2024, has also conducted cyber attacks against the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), aviation, telecommunications, and financial and legal services across the world, Microsoft said . The activity cluster, the company added, overlaps with a threat group that Recorded Future's Insikt Group is tracking as TAG-100 . Attack chains have involved targeting various internet-facing edge devices using publicly available exploits to gain initial access and drop Cobalt Strike as well as open-source malware such as Pantegana and Spark RAT, the cybersecurity company noted back in July. "Over the past decade, following numerous government indictments and the public disclosure of threat actors’ activities, tracking and attributing cyber operations originating from China has b...
