The US Government has yet again shuttered several domain names this week. The Department of Justice and Homeland Security’s ICE office proudly announced that they had seized domains related to counterfeit goods and child pornography. What they failed to mention, however, is that one of the targeted domains belongs to a free DNS provider, and that 84,000 websites were wrongfully accused of links to child pornography crimes. As part of “Operation Save Our Children” ICE’s Cyber Crimes Center has again seized several domain names, but not without making a huge error. Last Friday, thousands of site owners were surprised by a rather worrying banner that was placed on their domain. “Advertisement, distribution, transportation, receipt, and possession of child pornography constitute federal crimes that carry penalties for first time offenders of up to 30 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, forfeiture and restitution,” was the worrying message they read on their websites. It has been an embarrassing week for security firm HBGary and its HBGary Federal offshoot. HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr thought he had unmasked the hacker hordes of Anonymous and was preparing to name and shame those responsible for co-ordinating the group's actions, including the denial-of-service attacks that hit MasterCard, Visa, and other perceived enemies of WikiLeaks late last year. When Barr told one of those he believed to be an Anonymous ringleader about his forthcoming exposé, the Anonymous response was swift and humiliating. HBGary's servers were broken into, its e-mails pillaged and published to the world, its data destroyed, and its website defaced. As an added bonus, a second site owned and operated by Greg Hoglund, owner of HBGary, was taken offline and the user registration database published. The group of anonymous "hacktivists" that made headlines for online cyberattacks in December just released a bombshell online: a decrypted version of the same cyberworm that crippled Iran's nuclear power program. The ones and zeroes that make up the code called the Stuxnet worm -- described as the most sophisticated cyberweapon ever created -- were reportedly found when the faceless group hacked into the computers of HBGary, a U.S. security company that the anonymous collective viewed as an enemy. And the security experts spoke with said the leaked code was serious cause for concern. "There is the real potential that others will build on what is being released," Michael Gregg, chief operating officer of cybersecurity firm Superior Solutions. The CBI will seek Pakistan government's help in identifying members of a hacker group 'VERGIL' operating from that country and was allegedly involved in defacing the official website of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) in 2010. Accepting a CBI plea, a Delhi court today issued a 'letter of request' to the department of justice in Pakistan forobtaining information and documents relating to the case. The agency had moved an application before chief metropolitan magistrate Vinod Yadav, who said he was satisfied that a case has been made out for issuing the 'letter of request'. "Considering the facts and the circumstances of the case in totality, in my opinion, CBI has been able to make out a good case for issuance of Letter of Request under section 166 (A) CrPC in favour of the department of justice in Pakistan for obtaining the information and documents," the CMM said. Several Ortonville-area websites had similar messages from hackers Monday morning, warning the website owner of its vulnerability. "Your site has been hacked by me because we love you and we want to warn you," the hacker's message read. James Ellis, of Brandon Computers, is in charge of Brandon Township's website, www.BrandonTownship.us . It was one of many sites sharing the same server that were hacked. "For several years I have been doing this, and this is the first time I've seen it," Ellis said. Ellis said he fixed the problem and that there is no personal information on the site that can be stolen by hackers. The other websites belong to mostly local churches, Ellis said. Spanish police say they've arrested a hacker who threatened to go public with personal information he found in a Nintendo database on about 4,000 of the company's users. Nintendo's Spanish division, Nintendo Ibérica, was approached by the hacker, who was seeking to blackmail the company, Spain's Interior Ministry said Monday. The hacker had apparently found the company's database on the Internet, and he allegedly tried to cut a deal with Nintendo, threatening to both publish the information in an online forum and lodge a complaint with Spain's Data Protection Agency if his demands were not met. Nintendo contacted law enforcement about the issue in early February. The database contained personal information on about 4,000 users, the Interior Ministry said. Nintendo ignored his demands, and the hacker published some of the data in an online forum. He intended to eventually publish the entire database, the Interior Ministry said. Plextor has been hacked. Just days after announcing a new series of solid state drives, the digital storage company has found its U.S. site defaced by a digital vandal calling himself " ViciOuS ". The altered page declares "Hacked by ViciOuS", and includes a shout-out to fellow hackers, a link to what appears to be a hacker oriented website, and even a legally dubious claim to copyright. On Plextor's website, the attack appears to be limited to its U.S. site, as the company's European and Asian websites have been left unchanged. A search using snippets of text found on the defaced page shows that similar hacks have occurred on several other websites as well. The attack coincides with the U.S. launch of Plextor's new M2 line of SSDs, which supports the latest 6Gb/s SATA and offers some of the fastest speeds on the market. Whether the timing of this attack was intentional or merely a coincidence is undetermined.

The Australian and New Zealand shopping site of cosmetics retailer Lush has been hacked just weeks after a similar breach occurred on the UK site.  Credit card details and other intimate information of shoppers have been exposed. If you visit the Lush Cosmetics Australian  website  you will find a single banner page announcing that the site has suffered a "Privacy Breach."  This is contained as a single JPG image with no other links on the page.  In fact if you use your favourite search engine to find sub-pages, they all return a 404 error.  It would appear that the entire site has been removed from the server and the single banner page put in its place. Beijing - A Chinese man cited by a US security firm as being linked to cyberspying on Western oil companies said on Friday his company rents server space to hundreds of hackers. The disclosure highlighted the pervasiveness of both professional and amateur hacking in China, a leading source of Internet crime. But it also left open the possibility that the hackers cited in a report Thursday by McAfee might be non-Chinese who concealed their identities by routing thefts through computers in China. The man cited by McAfee, Song Zhiyue, is a salesman for a company in the eastern city of Heze that rents server space. He said he has heard of Chinese hackers targeting US oil companies but he declined to comment on McAfee's report. It said Song provided crucial infrastructure to the hackers but wasn't believed to be the mastermind. “Our company alone has a great number of hackers” as customers, Song said in a telephone interview. “I have several hundred of them among all my customers.”...

Job seekers' identities compromised in massive data breach. The Irish job website RecruitIreland.com was hacked last week, resulting in breached systems and the theft of the credentials of 400,000 users. The website was temporarily taken offline after the breach was discovered last Tuesday. A statement on the website read that the company had informed Britain's Data Protection Commissioner. “The present indicators are that our database was breached to get email addresses and names for spamming,'" the statement read. "We shut down access to the site and database at 2pm and immediately informed the Data Protection Commissioner and the Gardai [Irish police]. "We take this incident and any attempted breach of our database extremely seriously and this is being investigated internally by our own people."
