The Russia-linked threat actor known as Gamaredon (aka Shuckworm) has been attributed to a cyber attack targeting a foreign military mission based in Ukraine with an aim to deliver an updated version of a known malware called GammaSteel. The group targeted the military mission of a Western country, per the Symantec Threat Hunter team, with first signs of the malicious activity detected on February 26, 2025. "The initial infection vector used by the attackers appears to have been an infected removable drive," the Broadcom-owned threat intelligence division said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The attack started with the creation of a Windows Registry value under the UserAssist key, followed by launching "mshta.exe" using "explorer.exe" to initiate a multi-stage infection chain and launch two files. The first file, named "NTUSER.DAT.TMContainer00000000000000000001.regtrans-ms," is used to establish communications with a command-and...

Cryptocurrency Miner and Clipper Malware Spread via SourceForge Cracked Software Listings

Apr 08, 2025 Cryptocurrency / Malware
Threat actors have been observed distributing malicious payloads such as cryptocurrency miner and clipper malware via SourceForge , a popular software hosting service, under the guise of cracked versions of legitimate applications like Microsoft Office. "One such project, officepackage, on the main website sourceforge.net, appears harmless enough, containing Microsoft Office add-ins copied from a legitimate GitHub project," Kaspersky said in a report published today. "The description and contents of officepackage provided below were also taken from GitHub." While every project created on sourceforge.net gets assigned a "<project>.sourceforge.io" domain name, the Russian cybersecurity company found that the domain for officepackage, "officepackage.sourceforge[.]io," displays a long list of Microsoft Office applications and corresponding links to download them in Russian. On top of that, hovering over the download button reveals a seemi...

VSCode Marketplace Removes Two Extensions Deploying Early-Stage Ransomware

VSCode Marketplace Removes Two Extensions Deploying Early-Stage Ransomware

Mar 24, 2025 Malware / Encryption
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered two malicious extensions in the Visual Studio Code (VSCode) Marketplace that are designed to deploy ransomware that's under development to its users. The extensions, named "ahban.shiba" and "ahban.cychelloworld," have since been taken down by the marketplace maintainers. Both the extensions, per ReversingLabs , incorporate code that's designed to invoke a PowerShell command, which then grabs a PowerShell-script payload from a command-and-control (C2) server and executes it. The payload is suspected to be ransomware in early-stage development, only encrypting files in a folder called "testShiba" on the victim's Windows desktop. Once the files are encrypted, the PowerShell payload displays a message, stating "Your files have been encrypted. Pay 1 ShibaCoin to ShibaWallet to recover them." However, no other instructions or cryptocurrency wallet addresses are provided to the victims, anothe...

YouTube Game Cheats Spread Arcane Stealer Malware to Russian-Speaking Users

Mar 20, 2025 Malware / Threat Analysis
YouTube videos promoting game cheats are being used to deliver a previously undocumented stealer malware called Arcane likely targeting Russian-speaking users. "What's intriguing about this malware is how much it collects," Kaspersky said in an analysis. "It grabs account information from VPN and gaming clients, and all kinds of network utilities like ngrok, Playit, Cyberduck, FileZilla, and DynDNS." The attack chains involve sharing links to a password-protected archive on YouTube videos, which, when opened, unpacks a start.bat batch file that's responsible for retrieving another archive file via PowerShell. The batch file then utilizes PowerShell to launch two executables embedded within the newly downloaded archive, while also disabling Windows SmartScreen protections and every drive root folder to SmartScreen filter exceptions. Of the two binaries, one is a cryptocurrency miner and the other is a stealer dubbed VGS that's a variant of the Phe...

New Golang-Based Backdoor Uses Telegram Bot API for Evasive C2 Operations

Feb 17, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Cyber Attack
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a new Golang-based backdoor that uses Telegram as a mechanism for command-and-control (C2) communications. Netskope Threat Labs, which detailed the functions of the malware, described it as possibly of Russian origin. "The malware is compiled in Golang and once executed it acts like a backdoor," security researcher Leandro Fróes said in an analysis published last week. "Although the malware seems to still be under development it is completely functional." Once launched, the backdoor is designed to check if it's running under a specific location and using a specific name – "C:\Windows\Temp\svchost.exe" – and if not, it reads its own contents, writes them to that location, and creates a new process to launch the copied version and terminate itself. A notable aspect of the malware is that it uses an open-source library that offers Golang bindings for the Telegram Bot API for C2 purposes. This involves...
