GPUGate Malware Uses Google Ads and Fake GitHub Commits to Target IT Firms

GPUGate Malware Uses Google Ads and Fake GitHub Commits to Target IT Firms

9月 08, 2025 Malvertising / Encryption
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a new sophisticated malware campaign that leverages paid ads on search engines like Google to deliver malware to unsuspecting users looking for popular tools like GitHub Desktop. While malvertising campaigns have become commonplace in recent years, the latest activity gives it a little twist of its own: Embedding a GitHub commit into a page URL containing altered links that point to attacker-controlled infrastructure. "Even when a link seems to point to a reputable platform such as GitHub, the underlying URL can be manipulated to resolve to a counterfeit site," Arctic Wolf said in a report published last week. Exclusively targeting IT and software development companies within Western Europe since at least December 2024, the links within the rogue GitHub commit are designed to funnel users to a malicious download hosted on a lookalike domain ("gitpage[.]app"). The activity was first detected on August 19, 2025. The first...
ConnectWise to Rotate ScreenConnect Code Signing Certificates Due to Security Risks

ConnectWise to Rotate ScreenConnect Code Signing Certificates Due to Security Risks

6月 12, 2025 Vulnerability / Software Security
ConnectWise has disclosed that it's planning to rotate the digital code signing certificates used to sign ScreenConnect, ConnectWise Automate, and ConnectWise remote monitoring and management (RMM) executables due to security concerns. The company said it's doing so "due to concerns raised by a third-party researcher about how ScreenConnect handled certain configuration data in earlier versions." While the company did not publicly elaborate on the nature of the problem, it has shed more light in a non-public FAQ accessible only to its customers (and later shared on Reddit ) - The concern stems from ScreenConnect using the ability to store configuration data in an available area of the installer that is not signed but is part of the installer. We are using this ability to pass down configuration information for the connection (between the agent and server) such as the URL where the agent should call back without invalidating the signature. The unsigned area is u...
Hackers Exploit Fortinet Flaw, Deploy ScreenConnect, Metasploit in New Campaign

Hackers Exploit Fortinet Flaw, Deploy ScreenConnect, Metasploit in New Campaign

4月 17, 2024 Vulnerability / Web Application Firewall
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new campaign that's exploiting a recently disclosed security flaw in Fortinet FortiClient EMS devices to deliver ScreenConnect and Metasploit Powerfun payloads. The activity entails the exploitation of  CVE-2023-48788  (CVSS score: 9.3), a critical SQL injection flaw that could permit an unauthenticated attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via specifically crafted requests. Cybersecurity firm Forescout is  tracking  the campaign under the codename  Connect:fun  owing to the use of ScreenConnect and Powerfun for post-exploitation. The intrusion, which targeted an unnamed media company that had its vulnerable FortiClient EMS device exposed to the internet, took place shortly after the  release  of a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for the flaw on March 21, 2024. Over the next couple of days, the unknown adversary was observed leveraging the flaw to unsuccessfully download ScreenConnect an...

China-Linked Group Breaches Networks via Connectwise, F5 Software Flaws

China-Linked Group Breaches Networks via Connectwise, F5 Software Flaws

3月 22, 2024 Cyber Defense / Vulnerability
A China-linked threat cluster leveraged security flaws in Connectwise ScreenConnect and F5 BIG-IP software to deliver custom malware capable of delivering additional backdoors on compromised Linux hosts as part of an "aggressive" campaign. Google-owned Mandiant is  tracking  the activity under its uncategorized moniker  UNC5174  (aka Uteus or Uetus), describing it as a "former member of Chinese hacktivist collectives that has since shown indications of acting as a contractor for China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) focused on executing access operations." The threat actor is believed to have orchestrated widespread attacks against Southeast Asian and U.S. research and education institutions, Hong Kong businesses, charities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and U.S. and U.K. government organizations between October and November 2023, and again in February 2024 using the ScreenConnect bug. Initial access to target environments is facilitated by t...

Critical Flaws Found in ConnectWise ScreenConnect Software - Patch Now

2月 20, 2024 Vulnerability / Network Security
ConnectWise has released software updates to address two security flaws in its ScreenConnect remote desktop and access software, including a critical bug that could enable remote code execution on affected systems. The vulnerabilities are listed below - CVE-2024-1708 (CVSS score: 8.4) - Improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory aka "path traversal" CVE-2024-1709 (CVSS score: 10.0) - Authentication bypass using an alternate path or channel The company deemed the severity of the issues as critical, citing they "could allow the ability to execute remote code or directly impact confidential data or critical systems." Both the vulnerabilities impact ScreenConnect versions 23.9.7 and prior, with fixes available in version 23.9.8. The flaws were reported to the company on February 13, 2024. While there is no evidence that the shortcomings have been exploited in the wild, users who are running self-hosted or on-premise versions are recommended...
