Fixing the Weakest Link — The Passwords — in Cybersecurity Today

Fixing the Weakest Link — The Passwords — in Cybersecurity Today

Mar 11, 2021
Password security has long been an issue for businesses and their cybersecurity standards. Account passwords are often the weakest link in the overall security posture for many organizations. Many companies have used Microsoft's default password policies for decades. While these can be customized, businesses often accept the default values for their organization. The Windows default password policy is a good start, but are there security vulnerabilities associated with it? Let's look at the current recommendations from leading cybersecurity authorities and see how they measure up against the Windows default password policy. Windows default password policy settings Many, if not most, business environments today use Microsoft Active Directory as their identity and access management solution in the enterprise. Active Directory has served organizations in this capacity for decades.  One of the built-in capabilities provided by Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS)...

Microsoft Removes Password Management from Authenticator App Starting August 2025

Microsoft Removes Password Management from Authenticator App Starting August 2025

Jul 01, 2025 Mobile Security / Privacy
Microsoft has said that it's ending support for passwords in its Authenticator app starting August 1, 2025. Microsoft's move is part of a much larger shift away from traditional password-based logins. The company said the changes are also meant to streamline autofill within its two-factor authentication (2FA) app, making the experience simpler and more secure. Over the past few years, Microsoft has been pushing for a passwordless future using technologies like passkeys , Windows Hello, and FIDO2-based authentication. These methods offer better protection against phishing and password reuse, which are still major attack vectors. While it may feel like a hassle at first, this change is actually aimed at reducing your risk in the long run. "Starting July 2025, the autofill feature in Authenticator will stop working, and from August 2025, passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator," Microsoft said in a support document for Authenticator. It's worth noti...

You Can Now Sign-in to Your Microsoft Accounts Without a Password

You Can Now Sign-in to Your Microsoft Accounts Without a Password

Sep 16, 2021
Microsoft on Wednesday announced a new passwordless mechanism that allows users to access their accounts without a password by using Microsoft Authenticator, Windows Hello, a security key, or a verification code sent via SMS or email. The change is expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks. "Except for auto-generated passwords that are nearly impossible to remember, we largely create our own passwords,"  said  Vasu Jakkal, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Security, Compliance, and Identity. "But, given the vulnerability of passwords, requirements for them have gotten increasingly complex in recent years, including multiple symbols, numbers, case sensitivity, and disallowing previous passwords." "Passwords are incredibly inconvenient to create, remember, and manage across all the accounts in our lives," Jakkal added. Over the years, weak passwords have emerged as the entry point for a vast majority of attacks across enterprise and cons...
Microsoft Offers $100,000 Bounty for Finding Bugs in Its Identity Services

Microsoft Offers $100,000 Bounty for Finding Bugs in Its Identity Services

Jul 18, 2018
Microsoft today launched a new bug bounty program for bug hunters and researchers finding security vulnerabilities in its "identity services." Hacking into networks and stealing data have become common and easier than ever but not all data holds the same business value or carries the same risk. Since new security today depends on the collaborative communication of identities and identity data within, and across domains, digital identities of customers are usually the key to accessing services and interacting across the Internet. Microsoft said the company has heavily invested in the "creation, implementation, and improvement of identity-related specifications" that encourage "strong authentication, secure sign-on, sessions, API security, and other critical infrastructure tasks." Therefore, to further bolster its customers' security, the tech giant has launched an all-new, and independent bug bounty program. Dubbed Microsoft Identity Bounty ...

Sneaky 2FA Phishing Kit Adds BitB Pop-ups Designed to Mimic the Browser Address Bar

Sneaky 2FA Phishing Kit Adds BitB Pop-ups Designed to Mimic the Browser Address Bar

Nov 18, 2025 Browser Security / Cybercrime
The malware authors associated with a Phishing-as-a-Service (PhaaS) kit known as Sneaky 2FA have incorporated Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) functionality into their arsenal, underscoring the continued evolution of such offerings and further making it easier for less-skilled threat actors to mount attacks at scale. Push Security, in a report shared with The Hacker News, said it observed the use of the technique in phishing attacks designed to steal victims' Microsoft account credentials. BitB was first documented by security researcher mr.d0x in March 2022, detailing how it's possible to leverage a combination of HTML and CSS code to create fake browser windows that can masquerade as login pages for legitimate services in order to facilitate credential theft . "BitB is principally designed to mask suspicious phishing URLs by simulating a pretty normal function of in-browser authentication – a pop-up login form," Push Security said. "BitB phishing pages repl...

CISA Reports PRC Hackers Using BRICKSTORM for Long-Term Access in U.S. Systems

Dec 05, 2025 Network Security / Zero-Day
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on Thursday released details of a backdoor named BRICKSTORM that has been put to use by state-sponsored threat actors from the People's Republic of China (PRC) to maintain long-term persistence on compromised systems. "BRICKSTORM is a sophisticated backdoor for VMware vSphere and Windows environments," the agency said . "BRICKSTORM enables cyber threat actors to maintain stealthy access and provides capabilities for initiation, persistence, and secure command-and-control." Written in Golang, the custom implant essentially gives bad actors interactive shell access on the system and allows them to browse, upload, download, create, delete, and manipulate files The malware, mainly used in attacks targeting governments and information technology (IT) sectors, also supports multiple protocols, such as HTTPS, WebSockets, and nested Transport Layer Security (TLS), for command-and-control (C2), DNS-o...
Cost of Account Unlocks, and Password Resets Add Up

Cost of Account Unlocks, and Password Resets Add Up

Apr 22, 2021
There are many labor-intensive tasks that the IT service desk carries out on a daily basis. None as tedious and costly as resetting passwords. Modern IT service desks spend a significant amount of time both unlocking and resetting passwords for end-users. This issue has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Causes of account lockouts and password resets End-user password policies, such as those found in Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS), typically define a  password age . The password age is the length of time an end-user can keep their current password. While  new guidance from NIST  recommends against the long-held notion of forced password changes, it is still a common and required security mechanism across other compliance standards and industry certifications such as PCI and HITRUST. When the password age is reached for the user account, the user must change their account password. It is generally prompted at the next login on their worksta...
