Hurray! Unlocking Your Cell Phone is Officially Legal Again

Aug 02, 2014
President Barack Obama signed a bill into law Friday that aims to make it legal for consumers to "unlock" their cell phones in order to change their cell phone service providers without paying for a new phone. The bill is known as the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act , which orders the U.S. Library of Congress (LoC) to allow cell phone owners to " unlock " their devices – typically " locked ," to a specific service provider like AT&T or Verizon – for its use on other networks without the permission of their service provider. " As long as their phone is compatible and they have complied with their contracts, consumers will now be able to enjoy the freedom of taking their mobile service - and a phone they already own - to the carrier that best fits their needs, " the White House said in a statement . UNLOCKING Vs. JAILBREAKING Unlocking means the device can only access the network of a particular telecomm, like AT&T or Veriz...

Phone-Cracking Firm Found a Way to Unlock Any iPhone Model

Feb 27, 2018
Remember the infamous encryption fight between Apple and the FBI for unlocking an iPhone belonging to a terrorist behind the San Bernardino mass shooting that took place two years ago? After Apple refused to help the feds access data on the locked iPhone, the FBI eventually paid over a million dollar to a third-party company for unlocking the shooter's iPhone 5c. Now, it appears that the federal agency will not have to fight Apple over unlocking iPhones since the Israeli mobile forensics firm Cellebrite has reportedly figured out a way to unlock almost any iPhone in the market, including the latest iPhone X. Cellebrite , a major security contractor to the United States law enforcement agencies, claims to have a new hacking tool for unlocking pretty much every iPhone running iOS 11 and older versions, Forbes reports. In its own literature [ PDF ] "Advanced Unlocking and Extraction Services," Cellebrite says its services can break the security of "Apple iO...

⚠️ Imagine this: the very tools you trust to protect you online—your two-factor authentication, your car's tech system, even your security software—turned into silent allies for hackers. Sounds like a scene from a thriller, right? Yet, in 2024, this isn't fiction; it's the new cyber reality. Today's attackers have become so sophisticated that they're using our trusted tools as secret pathways, slipping past defenses without a 🔍 trace. For banks 🏦, this is especially alarming. Today's malware doesn't just steal codes; it targets the very trust that digital banking relies on. These threats are more advanced and smarter than ever, often staying a step ahead of defenses. And it doesn't stop there. Critical systems that power our cities are at risk too. Hackers are hiding within the very tools that run these essential services, making them harder to detect and harder to stop. It's a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek, where each move raises the risk. As these threats grow, let's dive ...

Samsung Galaxy S8's Facial Unlocking Feature Can Be Fooled With A Photo

Samsung Galaxy S8's Facial Unlocking Feature Can Be Fooled With A Photo

Mar 31, 2017
Samsung launched its new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, at its Unpacked 2017 event on Wednesday in New York, with both IRIS and Facial Recognition features, making it easier for users to unlock their smartphone and signing into websites. All users need to do is simply hold their Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus in front of their eyes or their entire face, as if they were taking a selfie, in order to unlock their phone. Biometric technology – that involve person's unique identification (ID), such as Retinal, IRIS, Fingerprint or DNA – is now being integrated into more consumer devices for improved security. But, we have seen a number of hacks involving Biometric security systems in the past, which prove that fingerprint scanner and IRIS scanner  are less secure than a passcode and can be fooled by anyone, perhaps, using a photograph of the user. But how secure is the built-in sensor from Samsung to allow for facial recognition? Not so much...at least for now...

When it comes to safeguarding your Internet security, installing an antivirus software or running a Secure Linux OS on your system does not mean you are safe enough from all kinds of cyber-threats. Today majority of Internet users are vulnerable to cyber attacks, not because they aren't using any best antivirus software or other security measures, but because they are using weak passwords to secure their online accounts. Passwords are your last lines of defense against online threats. Just look back to some recent data breaches and cyber attacks, including high-profile data breach at OPM ( United States Office of Personnel Management ) and the extra-marital affair site Ashley Madison , that led to the exposure of hundreds of millions of records online. Although you can not control data breaches, it is still important to create strong passwords that can withstand dictionary and brute-force attacks . You see, the longer and more complex your password is, the much harder...

NSA-Proof "Blackphone" Gets Rooted Within 5 Minutes

The ultra secure NSA-Proof Blackphone titled as, " world's first Smartphone which places privacy and control directly in the hands of its users, " has been rooted within 5 minutes at the BlackHat security conference in Las Vegas this weekend. Blackphone , a joint venture between encrypted communications firm Silent Circle and Spanish Smartphone maker Geeksphone , has a fully customized version of Android known as PrivatOS and pre-installed with lots of privacy-enabled applications, which claims to offer its users a high-end security at consumer level. A security researcher with twitter handle @TeamAndIRC took only 5 minutes to achieve root access on the Blackphone without having the need to unlock the device' bootloader. The hacker even mocked Blackphone's team by saying that "It is apparent no one ran CTS [ compatibility test suite ] on this device." The so-called " secure " Android phone that was promising security given the fact that its basically a suite of secure...
