Google may introduce Anti-NSA surveillance encryption for Google Drive

Google may introduce Anti-NSA surveillance encryption for Google Drive

Jul 18, 2013
Privacy protection in the services we use on a daily basis has been a big topic of conversation following accusations that Google, Microsoft, Apple and other large tech companies were working with government agencies to provide user data. According to a new report by CNet , Google may introduce encryption for users' data generated on their Google Drive to protect its customers' privacy against attempts by the U.S. government to access the data. Why Encryption ?  Secure encryption of users' private files means that Google would not be able to divulge the contents of stored communications even if NSA submitted a legal order under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or if police obtained a search warrant for domestic law enforcement purposes. "Mechanisms like this could give people more confidence and allow them to start backing up potentially their whole device, " said Seth Schoen, Electronic Frontier Foundation. Many companies use SSL and HTTPS to ...

WATCH OUT! Scammers targeting Google Account with Phishing Page hosted on Google Drive

Mar 18, 2014
You all are quite aware of phishing attacks , and for those who are not, Phishing scams are typically fraudulent email messages, masquerading as a well known and trustworthy entity in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from victims. However, phishing attacks have become more sophisticated recently. The Pro-hacker group, Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) is also popular for its advance phishing attack and had purposely targeted twitter account and websites of various popular brands like Forbes, Microsoft, Obama, Facebook, CNN, eBay and PayPal in the past using phishing techniques. Security researchers have seen an increase in the number of phishing attacks every day, but recently a tricky scam came across by the researchers at the Symantec , which is targeting Google Docs and Google Drive users. Under this phishing scam, an email with a subject of " Documents ", tricks recipient to view an ' important document ' stored on the Google Docs by cli...
Gmail and Google Calendar Now Support Client-Side Encryption (CSE) to Boost Data Privacy

Gmail and Google Calendar Now Support Client-Side Encryption (CSE) to Boost Data Privacy

Mar 01, 2023 Encryption / Email Security
Google has announced the general availability of client-side encryption (CSE) for Gmail and Calendar, months after  piloting the feature  in late 2022. The data privacy controls enable "even more organizations to become arbiters of their own data and the sole party deciding who has access to it," Google's Ganesh Chilakapati and Andy Wen  said . To that end, users can send and receive emails or create meeting events within their organizations or to other external parties in a manner that's encrypted "before it reaches Google servers." The company is also making available a decrypter utility in beta for Windows to decrypt client-side encrypted files and emails exported via its Data Export tool or Google Vault. macOS and Linux versions of the decrypter are expected to be released in the future. The development follows the  rollout of CSE  to other products such as Google Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet. The solution, the tech behemoth said, is ai...

miniLock - Open Source File Encryption Tool from CryptoCat Developer

Jul 06, 2014
It's the age of surveillance what made the Use of Encryption so widely that it has become a need of law enforcement agencies, cyber criminals as well as every individual. But, encryption is not so easy. To solve this problem, a 23-year old Cryptocat developer Nadim Kobeissi is ready to release a simple solution to deliver strong encryption at the HOPE hacker conference in New York later this month, which may soon come as an extension for Google Chrome web browser, Wired reported . The encryption program is dubbed as miniLock , which is a free and open-source browser plugin designed to let anyone encrypt and decrypt files in seconds using a drag-and-drop interface with practically unbreakable cryptographic protection. " The tagline is that this is file encryption that does more with less, " says Kobeissi, activist and security consultant. " It's super simple, approachable, and it's almost impossible to be confused using it. " Drag-and-drop interface here means, miniL...
Passwd: A walkthrough of the Google Workspace Password Manager

Passwd: A walkthrough of the Google Workspace Password Manager

Dec 23, 2025 Password Security / Enterprise Software
Passwd is designed specifically for organizations operating within Google Workspace. Rather than competing as a general consumer password manager, its purpose is narrow, and business-focused: secure credential storage, controlled sharing, and seamless Workspace integration. The platform emphasizes practicality over feature overload, aiming to provide a reliable system for teams that already rely on Google's tools.  Security as the starting point Encryption and data protection are the basic building blocks of Passwd. Every credential, file, or sensitive asset gets encrypted with AES-256, an extremely secure encryption standard that is widely recognized. Encryption happens before storage, keeping data protected throughout its lifecycle.  Passwd is based on a zero-knowledge architecture; only the users, not Passwd, are able to access decrypted data. It does not have any visibility of the stored passwords or secrets. The structure reflects an enterprise mindset: Centralize...
Enterprise Gmail Users Can Now Send End-to-End Encrypted Emails to Any Platform

Enterprise Gmail Users Can Now Send End-to-End Encrypted Emails to Any Platform

Apr 01, 2025 Encryption / Email Security
On the 21st birthday of Gmail , Google has announced a major update that allows enterprise users to send end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) to any user in any email inbox in a few clicks. The feature is rolling out starting today in beta, allowing users to send E2EE emails to Gmail users within an organization, with plans to send E2EE emails to any Gmail inbox in the coming weeks and to any email inbox later this year. What makes the new encryption model – an alternative to the Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions ( S/MIME ) protocol – stand out is that it eliminates the need for senders or recipients to use custom software or exchange encryption certificates. "This capability, requiring minimal efforts for both IT teams and end users, abstracts away the traditional IT complexity and substandard user experiences of existing solutions, while preserving enhanced data sovereignty, privacy, and security controls," Google Workspace's Johney Burke and Julien Duplant said...
How to encrypt your files before uploading to Cloud Storage using CloudFogger

How to encrypt your files before uploading to Cloud Storage using CloudFogger

Jan 16, 2014
In this Internet savvy generation, we want all of our data to be secured at some place. Having backups of your data is always a good idea, whether that data is stored in the Cloud or on your computer. But everyone who is following the Edward Snowden leaks of the NSA 's PRISM program now pushed to hardening their Mobile devices and computers for security, privacy, and anonymity. There are many Free Cloud storage providers including  Google Drive ,  Dropbox, Box, RapidShare, Amazon Cloud Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive  and many more. These services have a limitation that all data is unencrypted, or even if it is encrypted, the encryption keys are still generated by the company's software, meaning the company still has an access to your data. So as an end user, we must think about the security and privacy of our data. We should first encrypt our files on the system level and then upload a copy of it on the cloud storage. For this a robust and highly user friendly tool called...
Perfection is a Myth. Leverage Isn't: How Small Teams Can Secure Their Google Workspace

Perfection is a Myth. Leverage Isn't: How Small Teams Can Secure Their Google Workspace

May 05, 2025 Cloud Security / Security Operations
Let's be honest: if you're one of the first (or the first) security hires at a small or midsize business, chances are you're also the unofficial CISO, SOC, IT Help Desk, and whatever additional roles need filling. You're not running a security department. You are THE security department. You're getting pinged about RFPs in one area, and reviewing phishing alerts in another, all while sifting through endless FP alerts across the board. The tools meant to help are often creating more work than they solve. Security teams end up choosing between letting things slip or becoming the "Department of No." Chances are you inherited your company's Google Workspace. Thankfully, Google handles the infrastructure, the uptime, and the spam filtering. But while Google takes care of a lot, it doesn't cover everything, and it can be difficult for security teams to operationalize all of Google's underlying capabilities without significant engineering work. It's your job to se...

Unlocking Google Workspace Security: Are You Doing Enough to Protect Your Data?

Nov 22, 2024 Google Workspace / SaaS Backup
Google Workspace has quickly become the productivity backbone for businesses worldwide, offering an all-in-one suite with email, cloud storage and collaboration tools. This single-platform approach makes it easy for teams to connect and work efficiently, no matter where they are, enabling seamless digital transformation that's both scalable and adaptable. As companies shift from traditional, on-premises setups focused on device security, to more user-centered, hybrid models, Google Workspace is perfectly positioned to support this evolution. Now, the user account itself is the central hub, allowing access from any device or location — a game changer in today's remote and distributed work environments. However, with all this connectivity and flexibility comes a challenge. Google Workspace connects to countless apps and touches every user in the organization, making it an appealing target for cybercriminals. The platform's internet accessibility opens up additional entry points, raisi...
Flawed Android Factory Reset Failed to Clear Private Data from Smartphones

Flawed Android Factory Reset Failed to Clear Private Data from Smartphones

May 22, 2015
If you're planning to sell your old Android smartphone then you need to think again because there is a weakness in the Android Factory Reset option that could be exploited to recover your login credentials, text messages, emails and pictures even if you have wiped its memory clean. Computer researchers at the University of Cambridge conducted a study on Android devices from 5 different vendors and found that more than 500 Million Android devices don't completely erase data after the factory reset. "Factory Reset" function, built into Google's Android mobile operating system, is considered to be the most important feature to wipe all the confidential data out from the smartphone devices before going to sold, or recycled. However, the computer researchers found that the data could be recovered from the Android device even if users turned on full-disk encryption. The second-hand market is huge and based on the study; the researchers estimated that ov...

Chinese APT41 Exploits Google Calendar for Malware Command-and-Control Operations

May 29, 2025 Malware / Cloud Security
Google on Wednesday disclosed that the Chinese state-sponsored threat actor known as APT41 leveraged a malware called TOUGHPROGRESS that uses Google Calendar for command-and-control (C2). The tech giant, which discovered the activity in late October 2024, said the malware was hosted on a compromised government website and was used to target multiple other government entities. "Misuse of cloud services for C2 is a technique that many threat actors leverage in order to blend in with legitimate activity," Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) researcher Patrick Whitsell said . APT41, also tracked as Axiom, Blackfly, Brass Typhoon (formerly Barium), Bronze Atlas, Earth Baku, HOODOO, RedGolf, Red Kelpie, TA415, Wicked Panda, and Winnti, is the name assigned to a prolific nation-state group known for its targeting of governments and organizations within the global shipping and logistics, media and entertainment, technology, and automotive sectors. In July 2024, Google reve...

Best Free Password Manager Software You Can Download For 2018

Jul 30, 2016
When it comes to safeguarding your Internet security, installing an antivirus software or running a Secure Linux OS on your system does not mean you are safe enough from all kinds of cyber-threats. Today majority of Internet users are vulnerable to cyber attacks, not because they aren't using any best antivirus software or other security measures, but because they are using weak passwords to secure their online accounts. Passwords are your last lines of defense against online threats. Just look back to some recent data breaches and cyber attacks, including high-profile data breach at OPM ( United States Office of Personnel Management ) and the extra-marital affair site Ashley Madison , that led to the exposure of hundreds of millions of records online. Although you can not control data breaches, it is still important to create strong passwords that can withstand dictionary and brute-force attacks . You see, the longer and more complex your password is, the much harder...
