Unsecured Microsoft Bing Server Exposed Users' Search Queries and Location

Unsecured Microsoft Bing Server Exposed Users' Search Queries and Location

Sep 22, 2020
A back-end server associated with Microsoft Bing exposed sensitive data of the search engine's mobile application users, including search queries, device details, and GPS coordinates, among others. The logging database, however, doesn't include any personal details such as names or addresses. The data leak, discovered by Ata Hakcil of  WizCase  on September 12, is a massive 6.5TB cache of log files that was left for anyone to access without any password, potentially allowing cybercriminals to leverage the information for carrying out extortion and phishing scams. According to WizCase, the Elastic server is believed to have been password protected until September 10, after which the authentication seems to have been inadvertently removed. After the findings were privately disclosed to Microsoft Security Response Center, the Windows maker addressed the misconfiguration on September 16. Misconfigured servers have been a constant  source of data leaks  in recent y...

Popular Chrome Extensions Leak API Keys, User Data via HTTP and Hard-Coded Credentials

Popular Chrome Extensions Leak API Keys, User Data via HTTP and Hard-Coded Credentials

Jun 05, 2025 Browser Security / Online Safety
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged several popular Google Chrome extensions that have been found to transmit data in HTTP and hard-code secrets in their code, exposing users to privacy and security risks. "Several widely used extensions [...] unintentionally transmit sensitive data over simple HTTP," Yuanjing Guo, a security researcher in the Symantec's Security Technology and Response team, said . "By doing so, they expose browsing domains, machine IDs, operating system details, usage analytics, and even uninstall information, in plaintext." The fact that the network traffic is unencrypted also means that they are susceptible to adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) attacks, allowing malicious actors on the same network such as a public Wi-Fi to intercept and, even worse, modify this data, which could lead to far more serious consequences. The list of identified extensions are below - SEMRush Rank (extension ID: idbhoeaiokcojcgappfigpifhpkjgmab) and P...

Researchers Find ChatGPT Vulnerabilities That Let Attackers Trick AI Into Leaking Data

Researchers Find ChatGPT Vulnerabilities That Let Attackers Trick AI Into Leaking Data

Nov 05, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a new set of vulnerabilities impacting OpenAI's ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that could be exploited by an attacker to steal personal information from users' memories and chat histories without their knowledge. The seven vulnerabilities and attack techniques, according to Tenable, were found in OpenAI's GPT-4o and GPT-5 models. OpenAI has since addressed some of them .  These issues expose the AI system to indirect prompt injection attacks , allowing an attacker to manipulate the expected behavior of a large language model (LLM) and trick it into performing unintended or malicious actions, security researchers Moshe Bernstein and Liv Matan said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The identified shortcomings are listed below - Indirect prompt injection vulnerability via trusted sites in Browsing Context, which involves asking ChatGPT to summarize the contents of web pages with malicious instructions added...
Over a Dozen Chrome Extensions Caught Hijacking Google Search Results for Millions

Over a Dozen Chrome Extensions Caught Hijacking Google Search Results for Millions

Feb 03, 2021
New details have emerged about a vast network of rogue extensions for Chrome and Edge browsers that were found to hijack clicks to links in search results pages to arbitrary URLs, including phishing sites and ads. Collectively called " CacheFlow " by Avast, the 28 extensions in question — including Video Downloader for Facebook, Vimeo Video Downloader, Instagram Story Downloader, VK Unblock — made use of a sneaky trick to mask its true purpose: Leverage  Cache-Control  HTTP header as a covert channel to retrieve commands from an attacker-controlled server. All the  backdoored browser add-ons  have been taken down by Google and Microsoft as of December 18, 2020, to prevent more users from downloading them from the official stores. According to telemetry data gathered by the firm, the top three infected countries were Brazil, Ukraine, and France, followed by Argentina, Spain, Russia, and the U.S. The CacheFlow sequence began when unsuspecting users downloaded on...

3,000 YouTube Videos Exposed as Malware Traps in Massive Ghost Network Operation

Oct 24, 2025 Malware / Hacking News
A malicious network of YouTube accounts has been observed publishing and promoting videos that lead to malware downloads, essentially abusing the popularity and trust associated with the video hosting platform for propagating malicious payloads. Active since 2021, the network has published more than 3,000 malicious videos to date, with the volume of such videos tripling since the start of the year. It has been codenamed the YouTube Ghost Network by Check Point. Google has since stepped in to remove a majority of these videos. The campaign leverages hacked accounts and replaces their content with "malicious" videos that are centred around pirated software and Roblox game cheats to infect unsuspecting users searching for them with stealer malware. Some of these videos have racked up hundreds of thousands of views, ranging from 147,000 to 293,000. "This operation took advantage of trust signals, including views, likes, and comments, to make malicious content seem safe,...
