Cologne security expert used an Amazon cloud-based service for hacking purposes on the cheap. He plans on making his software public and will describe it more fully at a hacker conference in the US later this month. On Friday, Thomas Roth, a Cologne-based computer security expert told the Reuters news agency that the single password encryption method used by most WiFi network administrators is not as foolproof as they would like to think. By running specialized software on a cloud-based computer he leased from Amazon, the security researcher said he had been able to hack into WiFi networks secured under the Wireless Protected Access (WPA) protocol, which had been previously considered very hard to penetrate. While that might have been true until very recently, Roth has now found an easy and inexpensive way in. A Germany-based security researcher says he can hack into protected networks using software that runs on Amazon's cloud-based computers, according to a Reuters report. Thomas Roth, a computer security consultant based in Cologne, Germany, says he has "figured out a quick and inexpensive way to break a commonly used form of password protection for wireless networks using powerful computers that anybody can lease from Amazon.com Inc over the Web," the report said. According to Roth, he can hack into protected networks using specialized software that he has written that runs on Amazon's cloud-based computers. It tests 400,000 potential passwords per second using Amazon's high-speed computers, according to Reuters report. Amazon offers pay-as-you-go Web services for companies who don't want to lay out the capital to purchase and run the equipment. Even in March this year, a team of researchers successfully stored digital data — an entire operating system, a movie, an Amazon gift card, a study and a computer virus — in the strands of DNA. But what if someone stores a malicious program into the DNA, just like an infected USB storage, to hijack the computer that reads it. A team of researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle have demonstrated the first successful DNA-based exploit of a computer system that executes the malicious code written into the synthesised DNA strands while reading it. EXCLUSIVE — While revealing details of a massive supply chain cyber attack against ASUS customers, Russian security firm Kaspersky last week didn't release the full list all MAC addresses that hackers hardcoded into their malware to surgically target a specific pool of users. Instead, Kaspersky released a dedicated offline tool and launched an online web page where ASUS PC users can search for their MAC addresses to check whether they were in the hit list. However, many believe it is not a convenient way for large enterprises with hundreds of thousands of systems to know if they were targeted or not. German security researcher Thomas Roth has found an innovative use for cloud computing: cracking wireless networks that rely on pre-shared key passphrases, such as those found in homes and smaller businesses. Roth has created a program that runs on Amazon's Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) system. It uses the massive computing power of EC2 to run through 400,000 possible passwords per second, a staggering amount, hitherto unheard of outside supercomputing circles--and very likely made possible because EC2 now allows graphics processing units (GPUs) to be used for computational tasks. Among other things, these are particularly suited to password cracking tasks. In other words, this isn't a clever or elegant hack, and it doesn't rely on a flaw in wireless networking technology. Researchers at Mocana, a security technology firm in San Francisco, recently demonstrated the ease with which they could hack into a popular Internet-ready HDTV model. They exploited a vulnerability in the software that displays websites on the TV, allowing them to control the information sent to the television. This flaw enabled them to create fake screens for sites like Amazon.com, prompting users to enter their credit card details. Additionally, they could monitor data sent from the TV to other sites. "Consumer electronics makers seem to be rushing to connect all their products to the Internet," said Adrian Turner, Mocana's CEO. As cybersecurity researchers continue to piece together the sprawling  SolarWinds supply chain attack , top executives of the Texas-based software services firm blamed an intern for a critical password lapse that went unnoticed for several years.  The said password " solarwinds123 " was originally believed to have been publicly accessible via a GitHub repository since June 17, 2018, before the misconfiguration was addressed on November 22, 2019.
