Security Risks of FTP and Benefits of Managed File Transfer

Security Risks of FTP and Benefits of Managed File Transfer

Dec 10, 2013
File transfer services such as FTP or HTTP has been the most common way of file transfer for business requirements. Typically what a file transfer means is that a file transfer protocol such as FTP or HTTP is used to send the stream of bits stored as a single unit in a file system including file name, file size, timestamp and other metadata from one host to another host over a TCP-based network such as the Internet. But this process is not foolproof. FTP, by itself, is not a secure file transfer protocol and it has a lot of security vulnerabilities. It’s a known fact that FTP doesn’t provide any encryption for data transfer. Most of the times, the requirement in any business is pretty simple: to transfer files between two endpoints in different locations, and the parties involved do not think much about how secure the file transfer process is going to be. Using FTP for official file transfer can leave your data transmission exposed to many security attacks: FTP Bounce Attack Gener...
Unpatched Python and Java Flaws Let Hackers Bypass Firewall Using FTP Injection

Unpatched Python and Java Flaws Let Hackers Bypass Firewall Using FTP Injection

Feb 21, 2017
This newly discovered bugs in Java and Python is a big deal today. The two popular programming languages, Java and Python, contain similar security flaws that can be exploited to send unauthorized emails and bypass any firewall defenses. And since both the flaws remain unpatched, hackers can take advantage to design potential cyber attack operations against critical networks and infrastructures. The unpatched flaws actually reside in the way Java and Python programming languages handle File Transfer Protocol (FTP) links, where they don't syntax-check the username parameter, which leads to, what researchers call, protocol injection flaw. Java/Python FTP Injection to Send Unauthorized SMTP Emails In a blog pos t published over the past week, security researcher Alexander Klink detailed the FTP protocol injection vulnerability in Java's XML eXternal Entity (XXE) that allows attackers to inject non-FTP malicious commands inside an FTP connection request. To demonst...

Feb 04, 2014
DuckDuckGo , a private search engine that doesn't track your data over the internet and respects your online privacy ,  offers hundreds of Goodies that let you quickly do certain things like Programming, Math, Geek, Music related things. In our previous article, we have posted Cryptography hacks using DuckDuckGo search engine and today we are going to give another tutorial on DuckDuckGo Goodies for Sysadmins . Meaning of FTP Code: Being a system administrator, you might need to connect to a number of FTP servers. While handling FTP service you must be aware of the response code that it will give you when you initiate a connection or a new command. The FTP server response code will be of three digits and each digit has a special meaning. First digit denotes whether the response is good, bad or incomplete. There are hundreds of such FTP response codes. DuckDuckGo provides system administrators a facility to find the meaning of the response code received from the FTP ...

New TLS Attack Lets Attackers Launch Cross-Protocol Attacks Against Secure Sites

New TLS Attack Lets Attackers Launch Cross-Protocol Attacks Against Secure Sites

Jun 09, 2021
Researchers have disclosed a new type of attack that exploits misconfigurations in transport layer security (TLS) servers to redirect HTTPS traffic from a victim's web browser to a different TLS service endpoint located on another IP address to steal sensitive information. The attacks have been dubbed  ALPACA , short for "Application Layer Protocol Confusion - Analyzing and mitigating Cracks in tls Authentication," by a group of academics from Ruhr University Bochum, Münster University of Applied Sciences, and Paderborn University. "Attackers can redirect traffic from one subdomain to another, resulting in a valid TLS session," the study said. "This breaks the authentication of TLS and cross-protocol attacks may be possible where the behavior of one protocol service may compromise the other at the application layer." TLS  is a cryptographic protocol underpinning several application layer protocols like HTTPS, SMTP, IMAP, POP3, and FTP to secure com...
Warning: Malicious version of FTP Software FileZilla stealing users' Credentials

Warning: Malicious version of FTP Software FileZilla stealing users' Credentials

Jan 29, 2014
Malware code can be very small, and the impact can be very severe! The Antivirus firm AVAST spotted a malicious version of the open source FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software ' FileZilla ' out in the wild. The software is open source, but has been modified by the hackers that steal users' credentials, offered on various hacked sites for download with banner or text ads. Once installed, the software's appearance and functionalities are equal to the original version, so a user cannot distinguish between the fake or real one, and the malware version of the “ .exe ” file is just slightly smaller than the real one. " The installed malware FTP client looks like the official version and it is fully functional! You can’t find any suspicious behavior, entries in the system registry, communication or changes in application GUI ." The only difference is that the malware version use 2.46.3-Unicode and the official installer use v2.45-Unicode , as ...
Critical Wing FTP Server Vulnerability (CVE-2025-47812) Actively Being Exploited in the Wild

Critical Wing FTP Server Vulnerability (CVE-2025-47812) Actively Being Exploited in the Wild

Jul 11, 2025 Cyber Attack / Vulnerability
A recently disclosed maximum-severity security flaw impacting the Wing FTP Server has come under active exploitation in the wild, according to Huntress. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-47812 (CVSS score: 10.0), is a case of improper handling of null ('\0') bytes in the server's web interface, which allows for remote code execution. It has been addressed in version 7.4.4. "The user and admin web interfaces mishandle '\0' bytes, ultimately allowing injection of arbitrary Lua code into user session files," according to an advisory for the flaw on CVE.org. "This can be used to execute arbitrary system commands with the privileges of the FTP service (root or SYSTEM by default)." What makes it even more concerning is that the flaw can be exploited via anonymous FTP accounts. A comprehensive breakdown of the vulnerability entered the public domain towards the end of June 2025, courtesy of RCE Security researcher Julien Ahrens. Cybersecuri...
A New 'Arbitrary File Copy' Flaw Affects ProFTPD Powered FTP Servers

A New 'Arbitrary File Copy' Flaw Affects ProFTPD Powered FTP Servers

Jul 23, 2019
A German security researcher has publicly disclosed details of a serious vulnerability in one of the most popular FTP server applications, which is currently being used by more than one million servers worldwide. The vulnerable software in question is ProFTPD , an open source FTP server used by a large number of popular businesses and websites including SourceForge, Samba and Slackware, and comes pre-installed with many Linux and Unix distributions, like Debian. Discovered by Tobias Mädel , the vulnerability resides in the mod_copy module of the ProFTPD application, a component that allows users to copy files/directories from one place to another on a server without having to transfer the data to the client and back. According to Mädel, an incorrect access control issue in the mod_copy module could be exploited by an authenticated user to unauthorizedly copy any file on a specific location of the vulnerable FTP server where the user is otherwise not allowed to write a file. ...
CVE-2014-4877: Wget FTP Symlink Attack Vulnerability

CVE-2014-4877: Wget FTP Symlink Attack Vulnerability

Oct 30, 2014
The open-source Wget application which is most widely used on Linux and Unix systems for retrieving files from the web has found vulnerable to a critical flaw. GNU Wget is a command-line utility designed to retrieve files from the Web using HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP, the most widely used Internet protocols. Wget can be easily installed on any Unix-like system and has been ported to many environments, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, OpenVMS, MorphOS and AmigaOS. When a recursive directory fetch over FTP server as the target, it would let an attacker " create arbitrary files, directories or symbolic links " due to a symlink flaw. IMPACT OF SYMLINK ATTACK " It was found that wget was susceptible to a symlink attack which could create arbitrary files, directories or symbolic links and set their permissions when retrieving a directory recursively through FTP ," developer Vasyl Kaigorodov wrote in a Red Hat Bugzilla comment . A remote unauthentica...

Sep 25, 2012
A Romanian researcher - Radu Drăgușin  found that 100000 usernames and passwords of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) was stored in plaint-text on a publicly accessible FTP server. According to him, on Sept. 18 he first discovered a log with usernames and passwords in plaintext, publicly available via IEEE's FTP server for at least a month. He informed them of his find yesterday, and evidently the organization is addressing the issue. On the FTP server, according Dragusin were the logfiles for the offers and ieee.org spectrum.ieee.org - Total data to approximately 376 million HTTP requests. Including 411,308 log entries with login and password in plain text. Among the users who's information was exposed are researchers at NASA, Stanford, IBM, Google, Apple, Oracle and Samsung. IEEE's membership of over 340,000 is roughly half American (49.8 percent as of 2011). " IEEE suffered a data breach which I discovered on September 18. For a few da...
Detected a malware that steal image files via FTP … Should we be concerned?

Detected a malware that steal image files via FTP … Should we be concerned?

Nov 09, 2012
I have recently found an interesting post of Niranjan Jayanand, a researcher of McAfee and members of Facebook team and customer escalation team. The experts announced that his team has recently detected a Trojan that is able to steal every king of image files form a Windows PC, including a memory dump of the victim machine (.dmp files), and upload them to an FTP server. The activities observed are much suspected, they portend that there is an ongoing attack for cyber espionage or a massive information theft operation by  cyber crime  . This could be just a first stages of the attacks in which information are collected for further and complex initiatives. The stolen image files could be used for blackmailing the victims and demanding a ransom , it’s nor first time, let’s reminds what happened some months ago when nude pictures of celebrities were stolen. This is not the unique use that I could suppose, images could be also used for other purposes, they could be ...
GoBruteforcer Botnet Targets Crypto Project Databases by Exploiting Weak Credentials

GoBruteforcer Botnet Targets Crypto Project Databases by Exploiting Weak Credentials

Jan 12, 2026 Cryptocurrency / Artificial Intelligence
A new wave of GoBruteforcer attacks has targeted databases of cryptocurrency and blockchain projects to co-opt them into a botnet that's capable of brute-forcing user passwords for services such as FTP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and phpMyAdmin on Linux servers. "The current wave of campaigns is driven by two factors: the mass reuse of AI-generated server deployment examples that propagate common usernames and weak defaults, and the persistence of legacy web stacks such as XAMPP that expose FTP and admin interfaces with minimal hardening," Check Point Research said in an analysis published last week. GoBruteforcer, also called GoBrut, was first documented by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 in March 2023, documenting its ability to target Unix-like platforms running x86, x64, and ARM architectures to deploy an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) bot and a web shell for remote access, along with fetching a brute-force module to scan for vulnerable systems and expand the botnet's reach. ...

3 New Severe Security Vulnerabilities Found In SolarWinds Software

Feb 03, 2021
Cybersecurity researchers on Wednesday disclosed three severe security vulnerabilities impacting SolarWinds products, the most severe of which could have been exploited to achieve remote code execution with elevated privileges. Two of the flaws (CVE-2021-25274 and CVE-2021-25275) were identified in the SolarWinds Orion Platform, while a third separate weakness (CVE-2021-25276) was found in the company's Serv-U FTP server for Windows,  said  cybersecurity firm Trustwave in a technical analysis. None of the three vulnerabilities are believed to have been exploited in any "in the wild" attacks or during the unprecedented  supply chain attack  targeting the Orion Platform that came to light last December. The two sets of vulnerabilities in Orion and Serv-U FTP were disclosed to SolarWinds on December 30, 2020, and January 4, 2021, respectively, following which the company resolved the issues on January 22 and January 25. It's highly recommended that users install t...

Two Critical Flaws — CVSS Score 10 — Affect Dell Wyse Thin Client Devices

Two Critical Flaws — CVSS Score 10 — Affect Dell Wyse Thin Client Devices

Dec 21, 2020
A team of researchers today unveiled two critical security vulnerabilities in Dell Wyse Thin clients that could have potentially allowed attackers to remotely execute malicious code and access arbitrary files on affected devices. The flaws, which were uncovered by healthcare cybersecurity provider CyberMDX and reported to Dell in June 2020, affects all devices running ThinOS versions 8.6 and below. Dell has addressed both the vulnerabilities in an  update  released today. The flaws also have a CVSS score of 10 out of 10, making them critical in severity. Thin clients are typically computers that run from resources stored on a central server instead of a localized hard drive. They work by establishing a remote connection to the server, which takes care of launching and running applications and storing relevant data. Tracked as CVE-2020-29491 and CVE-2020-29492 , the security shortcomings in Wyse's thin clients stem from the fact that the FTP sessions used to pull firmwar...
