China Bans Microsoft Windows 8 for Government Computers

While US government is always prohibiting the purchase of Huawei products due to suspected backdoors from the Chinese government, China also keep itself totally apart from the US productions. China is a bit famous for using its own operating systems, smartphone application services and lots more, rather than using the US developed Operating Systems, and now China has reportedly banned the installation of Microsoft Corporation's latest operating system, Windows 8 on any of its government computers. The Central Government Procurement Center issued a notice that was posted on its website last week prohibiting the use of Microsoft's latest operating system and the reason behind it is to support the use of energy-saving products, the report said. But the state news agency ' Xinhua ' pointed out a different reason for the ban saying the country wants to avoid any further losing of the support for an operating system like it did recently by pulling out its support from t

Navigating the Threat Landscape: Understanding Exposure Management, Pentesting, Red Teaming and RBVM

Apr 29, 2024Exposure Management / Attack Surface
It comes as no surprise that today's cyber threats are orders of magnitude more complex than those of the past. And the ever-evolving tactics that attackers use demand the adoption of better, more holistic and consolidated ways to meet this non-stop challenge. Security teams constantly look for ways to reduce risk while improving security posture, but many approaches offer piecemeal solutions – zeroing in on one particular element of the evolving threat landscape challenge – missing the forest for the trees.  In the last few years, Exposure Management has become known as a comprehensive way of reigning in the chaos, giving organizations a true fighting chance to reduce risk and improve posture. In this article I'll cover what Exposure Management is, how it stacks up against some alternative approaches and why building an Exposure Management program should be on  your 2024 to-do list. What is Exposure Management?  Exposure Management is the systematic identification, evaluation,

China has always tried to support its homegrown tech industry and even the security concerns over U.S. secret surveillance which gives Chinese Government another reasons to trust domestic vendors. Many other countries are also in favor to develop their own technology industries to reduce their dependence on U.S. The Government of China is not too fond of foreign mobile operating systems and therefore are trying to break the monopoly of Microsoft, Apple and Google in the country. This week at an event in  Beijing,  China has unveiled its own Linux-based mobile platform, dubbed China Operating System (COS) , developed as a joint effort between a company ' Shanghai Liantong ', ISCAS ( Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences ) and the Chinese Government. According to  COS website , it is designed for PCs, Smartphones, tablets, TVs, set-top boxes and other smart appliances. It runs Java applications, supports HTML5 and can run over 100,000 apps. At

J.A.R.V.I.S : Artificial Intelligence Assistant Operating System for Hackers

J.A.R.V.I.S : Artificial Intelligence Assistant Operating System for Hackers

Sep 05, 2013
A group of Indian Hackers has designed Artificial Intelligence Assistant Operating System called ' J.A.R.V.I.S ' , who recognizes them, answer questions, tweet for them and Collect information, scan targets for them. Chiragh Dewan, a 18 year old student who is currently pursuing his BCA has taken the initiative to be the first Indian to complete this project  J.A.R.V.I.S , which is inspired by Iron Man's (movie) artificial intelligence assistant Jarvis. With his team of 7 including Himanshu Vaishnav, Mayur Singh, Krishanu Kashyap, Vikas Kumar, Vinmay Nair and Sravan Kumar, they are about to finish the 3rd level of the project. Their long term goal is to create an OS which could adapt itself according to the user's needs. Like if a doctor is using the OS, it will adapt itself so as it is capable of helping him out in his field like searching for new techniques, medicines, help in their research, etc. Add for architects, other professions.  As for users i

Other than Windows, Now other platforms are becoming more popular every day and attracting bad guys who are starting to create malicious code for other systems.  Java applications can run on multiple platforms with ease, thus no surprise that malicious code written in Java that is designed to target more than one operating system are becoming increasingly common. Researchers at McAfee Labs spotted another sample of Java based trojan dubbed as JV/BackDoor-FAZY  that opens a back door for an attacker to execute commands and acts as a bot after infection. According to researcher, The key to decrypt the config file was encrypted with Base 64, Triple-DES algorithm and Hex. Decrypting the file provides information about the backdoor connection, includes IP address, port number, operating system, mutex information, and password for the connection. " On execution, the JAR file opens the backdoor connection to the IP address and the port mentioned in the plain config

Kaspersky Lab Developing Secure Operating System for SCADA

Kaspersky Lab Developing Secure Operating System for SCADA

Oct 17, 2012
Eugene Kaspersky is working with his engineers at Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab to create a secure-by-design OS for ICS. In an interview Kaspersky said " It's true no one else ever tried to make a secure operating system. This may sound weird because of the many efforts Microsoft, Apple and the open source community have made to make their platforms as secure as possible. With all respect, we should admit they were developing a universal solution for a wide range of application and various kinds of users. And security and usability is always a matter of compromise! With a universal OS a developer inevitably sacrifices security for usability ." Companies that maintain ICS are forced to try to patch them on the fly in the event of a malware attack, a process usually easier said than done. Instead, Kaspersky suggests that the solution lies in a secure operating system, one in which ICS can be installed. Such an OS could help ensure that industrial systems stay healthy
