Flaw in Philips Smart Light Bulbs Exposes Your WiFi Network to Hackers

Flaw in Philips Smart Light Bulbs Exposes Your WiFi Network to Hackers

Feb 05, 2020
There are over a hundred potential ways hackers can ruin your life by having access to your WiFi network that's also connected to your computers, smartphones, and other smart devices. Whether it's about exploiting operating system and software vulnerabilities or manipulating network traffic, every attack relies on the reachability between an attacker and the targeted devices. In recent years, we have seen how hundreds of widely used smart-but-insecure devices made it easier for remote attackers to sneak into connected networks without breaking WiFi passwords. In the latest research shared with The Hacker News, Check Point experts today revealed a new high-severity vulnerability affecting Philips Hue Smart Light Bulbs that can be exploited over-the-air from over 100 meters away to gain entry into a targeted WiFi network. The underlying high-severity vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2020-6007 , resides in the way Philips implemented the Zigbee communication protocol in it...
New Exploit Threatens Over 9,000 Hackable Cisco RV320/RV325 Routers Worldwide

New Exploit Threatens Over 9,000 Hackable Cisco RV320/RV325 Routers Worldwide

Jan 28, 2019
If the connectivity and security of your organization rely on Cisco RV320 or RV325 Dual Gigabit WAN VPN routers, then you need to immediately install the latest firmware update released by the vendor last week. Cyber attackers have actively been exploiting two newly patched high-severity router vulnerabilities in the wild after a security researcher released their proof-of-concept exploit code on the Internet last weekend. The vulnerabilities in question are a command injection flaw (assigned CVE-2019-1652) and an information disclosure flaw (assigned CVE-2019-1653), a combination of which could allow a remote attacker to take full control of an affected Cisco router. The first issue exists in RV320 and RV325 dual gigabit WAN VPN routers running firmware versions 1.4.2.15 through 1.4.2.19, and the second affects firmware versions 1.4.2.15 and 1.4.2.17, according to the Cisco's advisory . Both the vulnerabilities, discovered and responsibly reported to the company by German s...

Hacker Shows How Easy It Is To Hack People While Walking Around in Public

Wi-Fi enabled devices — widely known as the Internet of Things (IoT) — are populating offices and homes in greater and greater numbers. From smartphones to connected printers and even coffee makers, most of these IoT devices have good intentions and can connect to your company's network without a problem. However, as the Internet of Things (IoT) devices are growing at a great pace, they continue to widen the attack surface at the same time, giving attackers a large number of entry points to affect you some or the other way. The attackers can use your smart devices to gain backdoor entry to your network, giving them the capability to steal sensitive data, such as your personal information, along with a multitude of other malicious acts. An interesting attack scenario has recently been demonstrated by one of the renowned hackers, Jayson Street , who said all it is needed is to walk around with the right device to get into someone's device. Before we jump into the te...

How To Stop Larry From Hacking Your WiFi in 2017

How To Stop Larry From Hacking Your WiFi in 2017

Jan 16, 2017
It's 2017, and we're not any further along with Wi-Fi security than we were 10 years ago. There are Intrusion Detection Systems and 2nd generation antivirus apps to protect us from some vulnerabilities but the simple fact that some people and businesses still don't set their network up well in the first place. Installing WiFi is like running Ethernet to your parking lot. It's a cliche thing to say, but it is often true. If I can attack your network sitting in my car from the parking lot, what chance do you have? And 99% of the time I'm successful. Lots of companies are moving to new offices that have wide open office layouts. Some may not have BYOD policies or wireless security plans in place, and anyone can bring their own device to work that you may not know about. I've even seen some companies installing IoT devices like smart led light bulbs and thermostats. Even some security camera systems which are always running unsecured and default passwords. So what can you ...

Google WiFi Router — Combine Multiple Routers to Boost WiFi Signal

Can you rely on a single loudspeaker in your living room for great sound throughout your home? Nah! In the same way, you can not expect a single WiFi router to provide stable range throughout your home. To solve this issue, Google will soon power your home's wireless internet network with its own-brand new WiFi router called Google WiFi , according to a new report. Google is set to launch a lot of new gadgets at its hardware event on October 4 including the new Pixel smartphones, Google Home, the refreshed 4K-capable Chromecast rumored to be called Chromecast Ultra and the new Google WiFi router. But the Google WiFi router might be the biggest surprise of the bunch. Google WiFi is said to be designed in such a way that it can be deployed in groups to create a mesh network so that multiple units can be linked together, similar to Eero's incredible router, according to a report from Android Police. With Google WiFi, you simply need to plug one device into your ...
Facebook to Launch Commercial Express Wi-Fi Service In India

Facebook to Launch Commercial Express Wi-Fi Service In India

Aug 08, 2016
After the failure of Facebook's Free Basics -- an initiative to provide free Internet access -- in India due to the violation of Net Neutrality principles, Facebook has reintroduced its plan to provide Internet access in rural India, but this time: The social networking giant is planning to launch a commercial WiFi service in India. Facebook is testing a WiFi service in rural India, allowing people with no internet connection to buy affordable data packages from their local internet service providers (ISPs) in order to access the Internet via local hotspots. Dubbed Express Wi-Fi , the program is in sync with Mark Zuckerberg's Internet.org -- the platform Facebook used for its Free Basics to bring the Internet to all. India banned Free Basics in the country on net neutrality grounds. Net Neutrality advocates argued that by offering some websites and services for free, people are discouraged from visiting other sites. Now, Facebook has partnered with state-owned ...

Critical iOS Flaw allowed Hackers to Steal Cookies from Devices

Jan 21, 2016
Apple has patched a critical vulnerability in its iOS operating system that allowed criminal hackers to impersonate end users' identities by granting read/write access to website's unencrypted authentication cookies. The vulnerability was fixed with the release of iOS 9.2.1 on Tuesday, almost three years after it was first discovered and reported to Apple. The vulnerability, dubbed " Captive Portal " bug, was initially discovered by Adi Sharabani and Yair Amit from online security company Skycure and privately reported to Apple in June 2013. Here's How the Vulnerability Worked The vulnerability caused due to the way iOS handles Cookie Stores at Captive Portals , generally a login page that requires users to authenticate themselves before connecting to the free or paid public Wi-Fi hotspots when they are first joining. So, when a user with a vulnerable iPhone or iPad connects to a captive-enabled network ( sample page shown in the screensho...
