5 High Impact Flaws Affect Cisco Routers, Switches, IP Phones and Cameras

5 High Impact Flaws Affect Cisco Routers, Switches, IP Phones and Cameras

Feb 05, 2020
Several Cisco-manufactured network equipments have been found vulnerable to five new security vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to take complete control over them, and subsequently, over the enterprise networks they power. Four of the five high-severity bugs are remote code execution issues affecting Cisco routers, switches, and IP cameras, whereas the fifth vulnerability is a denial-of-service issue affecting Cisco IP phones. Collectively dubbed ' CDPwn ,' the reported vulnerabilities reside in the various implementations of the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) that comes enabled by default on virtually all Cisco devices and can not be turned OFF. Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is an administrative protocol that works at Layer 2 of the Internet Protocol (IP) stack. The protocol has been designed to let devices discover information about other locally attached Cisco equipment in the same network. According to a report Armis research team shared with The Hacker N...

With the migration of governments and enterprises towards controller-based architectures, the role of a core network engineer has become more important than ever. Today, majority of interconnected wide area networks (WANs) and local area networks (LANs) in the world run on Cisco routers and other Cisco networking equipment, and therefore most organizations need network engineers to maintain and program these networks. So, if you are looking forward to making career advancement in networking, then Cisco's CCNA and CCNP certifications are one of the most highly reputed entry-level networking certifications in the industry. While CCNA, or Cisco Certified Network Associate, is for entry-level network engineers to maximize their foundational networking knowledge, CCNP or Cisco Certified Network Professional is intended for professionals to implement, maintain and plan Cisco's wide range of high-end network solution products. But how long have you wanted to take CCNA and ...

5 Reasons Device Management Isn't Device Trust

Apr 21, 2025Endpoint Security / Zero Trust
The problem is simple: all breaches start with initial access, and initial access comes down to two primary attack vectors – credentials and devices. This is not news; every report you can find on the threat landscape depicts the same picture.  The solution is more complex. For this article, we'll focus on the device threat vector. The risk they pose is significant, which is why device management tools like Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) are essential components of an organization's security infrastructure. However, relying solely on these tools to manage device risk actually creates a false sense of security. Instead of the blunt tools of device management, organizations are looking for solutions that deliver device trust . Device trust provides a comprehensive, risk-based approach to device security enforcement, closing the large gaps left behind by traditional device management solutions. Here are 5 of those limitations and how to ov...

Cisco to Buy OpenDNS Company for $635 Million

Jul 01, 2015
Cisco, a networking giant that offers traditional network edge protection, has announced that the company is buying cloud-based security company OpenDNS for $635 Million . Yes, OpenDNS , whose Domain Name Services (DNS) you might have used to avoid regional restrictions or to improve your Internet connection. However, Cisco is not making the acquisition of OpenDNS for any of the above reasons. Instead, the networking giant says it will boost its own cloud security, adding "broad visibility and threat intelligence from the OpenDNS cloud-delivered platform." The aim is to offer you the protection against cyber attacks on your corporate network from any device, anywhere, anytime, and to predict threats before they strike. Hilton Romanski , who leads business development at Cisco, wrote in his blog post : "The acquisition will extend our ability to provide customers enhanced visibility and threat protection for unmonitored and potentially unsecure entry...
