Lazarus Group Targets Web3 Developers with Fake LinkedIn Profiles in Operation 99

Lazarus Group Targets Web3 Developers with Fake LinkedIn Profiles in Operation 99

Jan 15, 2025 Cryptocurrency / Malware
The North Korea-linked Lazarus Group has been attributed to a new cyber attack campaign dubbed Operation 99 that targeted software developers looking for freelance Web3 and cryptocurrency work to deliver malware. "The campaign begins with fake recruiters, posing on platforms like LinkedIn, luring developers with project tests and code reviews," Ryan Sherstobitoff, senior vice president of Threat Research and Intelligence at SecurityScorecard, said in a new report published today. "Once a victim takes the bait, they're directed to clone a malicious GitLab repository – seemingly harmless, but packed with disaster. The cloned code connects to command-and-control (C2) servers, embedding malware into the victim's environment." Victims of the campaign have been identified across the globe, with a significant concentration recorded in Italy. A lesser number of impacted victims are located in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Mexico,...
WordPress Skimmers Evade Detection by Injecting Themselves into Database Tables

WordPress Skimmers Evade Detection by Injecting Themselves into Database Tables

Jan 13, 2025 Payment Security / Web Security
Cybersecurity researchers are warning of a new stealthy credit card skimmer campaign that targets WordPress e-commerce checkout pages by inserting malicious JavaScript code into a database table associated with the content management system (CMS). "This credit card skimmer malware targeting WordPress websites silently injects malicious JavaScript into database entries to steal sensitive payment details," Sucuri researcher Puja Srivastava said in a new analysis. "The malware activates specifically on checkout pages, either by hijacking existing payment fields or injecting a fake credit card form." The GoDaddy-owned website security company said it discovered the malware embedded into the WordPress wp_options table with the option "widget_block," thus allowing it to avoid detection by scanning tools and persist on compromised sites without attracting attention. In doing so, the idea is to insert the malicious JavaScript into an HTML block widget thr...
Protecting Your Software Supply Chain: Assessing the Risks Before Deployment

Protecting Your Software Supply Chain: Assessing the Risks Before Deployment

Feb 11, 2025Software Security / Threat Intelligence
Imagine you're considering a new car for your family. Before making a purchase, you evaluate its safety ratings, fuel efficiency, and reliability. You might even take it for a test drive to ensure it meets your needs. The same approach should be applied to software and hardware products before integrating them into an organization's environment. Just as you wouldn't buy a car without knowing its safety features, you shouldn't deploy software without understanding the risks it introduces. The Rising Threat of Supply Chain Attacks Cybercriminals have recognized that instead of attacking an organization head-on, they can infiltrate through the software supply chain—like slipping counterfeit parts into an assembly line. According to the 2024 Sonatype State of the Software Supply Chain report , attackers are infiltrating open-source ecosystems at an alarming rate, with over 512,847 malicious packages detected last year alone—a 156% increase from the previous year. Traditional sec...
Hackers Using Fake Video Conferencing Apps to Steal Web3 Professionals' Data

Hackers Using Fake Video Conferencing Apps to Steal Web3 Professionals' Data

Dec 07, 2024 Malware / Web3 Security
Cybersecurity researchers have warned of a new scam campaign that leverages fake video conferencing apps to deliver an information stealer called Realst targeting people working in Web3 under the guise of fake business meetings. "The threat actors behind the malware have set up fake companies using AI to make them increase legitimacy," Cado Security researcher Tara Gould said . "The company reaches out to targets to set up a video call, prompting the user to download the meeting application from the website, which is Realst infostealer." The activity has been codenamed Meeten by the security company, owing to the use of names such as Clusee, Cuesee, Meeten, Meetone, and Meetio for the bogus sites. The attacks entail approaching prospective targets on Telegram to discuss a potential investment opportunity, urging them to join a video call hosted on one of the dubious platforms. Users who end up on the site are prompted to download a Windows or macOS version dep...

Hacked WordPress Sites Abusing Visitors' Browsers for Distributed Brute-Force Attacks

Hacked WordPress Sites Abusing Visitors' Browsers for Distributed Brute-Force Attacks

Mar 07, 2024 Vulnerability / Web Security
Threat actors are conducting brute-force attacks against WordPress sites by leveraging malicious JavaScript injections, new findings from Sucuri reveal. The attacks, which take the form of distributed brute-force attacks, "target WordPress websites from the browsers of completely innocent and unsuspecting site visitors," security researcher Denis Sinegubko  said . The activity is part of a  previously documented attack wave  in which compromised WordPress sites were used to inject crypto drainers such as Angel Drainer directly or redirect site visitors to Web3 phishing sites containing drainer malware. The latest iteration is notable for the fact that the injections – found on  over 700 sites  to date – don't load a drainer but rather use a list of common and leaked passwords to brute-force other WordPress sites. The attack unfolds over five stages, enabling a threat actor to take advantage of already compromised websites to launch distributed brute-force ...
Inferno Malware Masqueraded as Coinbase, Drained $87 Million from 137,000 Victims

Inferno Malware Masqueraded as Coinbase, Drained $87 Million from 137,000 Victims

Jan 16, 2024 Cryptocurrency / Cyber Threat
The operators behind the now-defunct  Inferno Drainer  created more than 16,000 unique malicious domains over a span of one year between 2022 and 2023. The scheme "leveraged high-quality phishing pages to lure unsuspecting users into connecting their cryptocurrency wallets with the attackers' infrastructure that spoofed Web3 protocols to trick victims into authorizing transactions," Singapore-headquartered Group-IB  said  in a report shared with The Hacker News. Inferno Drainer, which was active from  November 2022 to November 2023 , is estimated to have reaped over  $87 million in illicit profits  by scamming more than 137,000 victims. The malware is part of a broader set of similar offerings that are available to affiliates under the scam-as-a-service (or drainer-as-a-service) model in exchange for a 20% cut of their earnings. What's more, customers of Inferno Drainer could either upload the malware to their own phishing sites, or make use of t...
Chinese Hackers Distribute Backdoored Web3 Wallets for iOS and Android Users

Chinese Hackers Distribute Backdoored Web3 Wallets for iOS and Android Users

Jun 13, 2022
A technically sophisticated threat actor known as  SeaFlower  has been targeting Android and iOS users as part of an extensive campaign that mimics official cryptocurrency wallet websites intending to distribute backdoored apps that drain victims' funds. Said to be first discovered in March 2022, the cluster of activity "hint[s] to a strong relationship with a Chinese-speaking entity yet to be uncovered," based on the macOS usernames, source code comments in the backdoor code, and its abuse of Alibaba's Content Delivery Network (CDN). "As of today, the main current objective of SeaFlower is to modify Web3 wallets with backdoor code that ultimately exfiltrates the seed phrase," Confiant's Taha Karim  said  in a technical deep-dive of the campaign. Targeted apps include Android and iOS versions of Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, TokenPocket, and imToken. SeaFlower's modus operandi involves setting up cloned websites that act as a conduit to download ...
Microsoft Warns of 'Ice Phishing' Threat on Web3 and Decentralized Networks

Microsoft Warns of 'Ice Phishing' Threat on Web3 and Decentralized Networks

Feb 18, 2022
Microsoft has warned of emerging threats in the  Web3  landscape, including "ice phishing" campaigns, as a surge in adoption of blockchain and DeFi technologies emphasizes the need to build security into the decentralized web while it's still in its early stages. The company's Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team called out various new avenues through which malicious actors may attempt to trick cryptocurrency users into giving up their private cryptographic keys and carry out unauthorized fund transfers. "One aspect that the immutable and public blockchain enables is complete transparency, so an attack can be observed and studied after it occurred," Christian Seifert, principal research manager at Microsoft's Security and Compliance group,  said . "It also allows assessment of the financial impact of attacks, which is challenging in traditional Web2 phishing attacks." The theft of the keys could be carried out in several ways, including im...
