Gaza-Linked Cyber Threat Actor Targets Israeli Energy and Defense Sectors

Gaza-Linked Cyber Threat Actor Targets Israeli Energy and Defense Sectors

Oct 09, 2023 Cyber War / Cyber Threat
A Gaza-based threat actor has been linked to a series of cyber attacks aimed at Israeli private-sector energy, defense, and telecommunications organizations. Microsoft, which revealed details of the activity in its fourth annual  Digital Defense Report , is tracking the campaign under the name  Storm-1133 . "We assess this group works to further the interests of Hamas, a Sunni militant group that is the de facto governing authority in the Gaza Strip, as activity attributed to it has largely affected organizations perceived as hostile to Hamas," the company said. Targets of the campaign included organizations in the Israeli energy and defense sectors and entities loyal to Fatah, a Palestinian nationalist and social democratic political party headquartered in the West Bank region. Attack chains entail a mix of social engineering and fake profiles on LinkedIn that masquerade as Israeli human resources managers, project coordinators, and software developers to contact and s

Palestine-Aligned Hackers Use New NimbleMamba Implant in Recent Attacks

Feb 08, 2022
An advanced persistent threat (APT) hacking group operating with motives that likely align with Palestine has embarked on a new campaign that takes advantage of a previously undocumented implant called NimbleMamba . The intrusions leveraged a sophisticated attack chain targeting Middle Eastern governments, foreign policy think tanks, and a state-affiliated airline, enterprise security firm Proofpoint  said  in a report, attributing the covert operation to a threat actor tracked as Molerats (aka TA402). Notorious for continuously updating their malware implants and their delivery methods, the APT group was most recently linked to an  espionage offensive  aimed at human rights activists and journalists in Palestine and Turkey, while a previous attack exposed in June 2021 resulted in the deployment of a backdoor called  LastConn . But the lull in the activities has been offset by the operators actively working to retool their arsenal, resulting in the development of NimbleMamba, whic

CTEM 101 - Go Beyond Vulnerability Management with Continuous Threat Exposure Management

Mar 12, 2024CTEM / Vulnerability Management
In a world of ever-expanding jargon, adding another FLA (Four-Letter Acronym) to your glossary might seem like the last thing you'd want to do. But if you are looking for ways to continuously reduce risk across your environment while making significant and consistent improvements to security posture, in our opinion, you probably want to consider establishing a  Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM)  program.  CTEM is an approach to cyber risk management that combines attack simulation, risk prioritization, and remediation guidance in one coordinated process. The term Continuous Threat Exposure Management first appeared in the Gartner ® report, Implement a Continuous Threat Exposure Management Program (CTEM) (Gartner, 21 July 2022,). Since then, we have seen that organizations across the globe are seeing the benefits of this integrated, continual approach. Webinar: Why and How to Adopt the CTEM Framework XM Cyber is hosting a webinar featuring Gartner VP Analyst Pete Shoa

Israel Neutralizes Cyber Attack by Blowing Up A Building With Hackers

May 06, 2019
The Israel Defense Force (IDF) claims to have neutralized an "attempted" cyber attack by launching airstrikes on a building in Gaza Strip from where it says the attack was originated. As shown in a video tweeted by IDF, the building in the Gaza Strip, which Israeli fighter drones have now destroyed, was reportedly the headquarters for Palestinian Hamas military intelligence, from where a cyber unit of hackers was allegedly trying to penetrate Israel's cyberspace. "We thwarted an attempted Hamas cyber offensive against Israeli targets. Following our successful cyber defensive operation, we targeted a building where the Hamas cyber operatives work. HamasCyberHQ.exe has been removed," said the Israeli Defence Forces on Twitter. However, the Israel Defense Force has not shared any information about the attempted cyber attack by the Hamas group, saying it would reveal the country's cyber capabilities. According to Judah Ari Gross of Times of Israel ,

Dubbed ViperRAT , the malware has specifically been designed to hijack Israeli soldiers' Android-based smartphones and remotely exfiltrate data of high value, including photos and audio recordings, directly from the compromised devices. Modus Operandi Identified According to the security firms, IDF personnel had been compromised by social engineering techniques — where the soldiers were lured via Facebook Messenger and other social networks into entering communications with hackers who posed as attractive women from various countries like Canada, Germany, and Switzerland. Aug 22, 2013
The Palestinian hacker ' Khalil Shreateh ', who broke into the Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Timeline  to expose a security lapse will be awarded nearly $12,000 but not from Facebook, it will come from an online crowdsourced campaign. The hacker initially used Facebook's whitehat disclosure program, a service that rewards bug hunters for reporting vulnerabilities, to inform the company about the issue. Facebook refused to pay him for finding the bug since he used it to post on Mark Zuckerberg's wall, because Facebook had ignored his earlier warnings. The exploit allows users to post to other Facebook user's timeline while they are not in friend list. Marc Maiffret, CTO of BeyondTrust, has kicked off a crowd-sourced funding to come up with a reward for Khalil Shreateh, and the results have already been impressive. ' Khalil Shreateh found a vulnerability in Facebook.com and, due to miscommunication , was not awarded a bounty for his work,'
