New Wave of JSOutProx Malware Targeting Financial Firms in APAC and MENA

Apr 05, 2024 Cyber Espionage / Cybersecurity
Financial organizations in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are being targeted by a new version of an "evolving threat" called  JSOutProx . "JSOutProx is a sophisticated attack framework utilizing both JavaScript and .NET," Resecurity  said  in a technical report published this week. "It employs the .NET (de)serialization feature to interact with a core JavaScript module running on the victim's machine. Once executed, the malware enables the framework to load various plugins, which conduct additional malicious activities on the target." First  identified  in December 2019 by Yoroi, early attacks distributing JSOutProx have been attributed to a threat actor tracked as  Solar Spider . The cyber crime actors behind the malware have a track record of striking banks and other big companies in Asia and Europe. In late 2021, Quick Heal Security Labs  detailed  attacks leveraging the remote access trojan (RAT) to single out

Malicious Code in XZ Utils for Linux Systems Enables Remote Code Execution

Apr 02, 2024 Firmware Security / Vulnerability
The malicious code inserted into the open-source library XZ Utils, a widely used package present in major Linux distributions, is also capable of facilitating remote code execution, a new analysis has revealed. The audacious supply chain compromise, tracked as  CVE-2024-3094  (CVSS score: 10.0), came to light last week when Microsoft engineer and PostgreSQL developer Andres Freund alerted to the  presence  of a  backdoor  in the data compression utility that gives remote attackers a way to sidestep secure shell authentication and gain complete access to an affected system. "I was doing some micro-benchmarking at the time, needed to quiesce the system to reduce noise," Freund said in a post shared on Mastodon. "Saw sshd processes were using a surprising amount of CPU, despite immediately failing because of wrong usernames etc." "Profiled sshd, showing lots of cpu time in liblzma, with perf unable to attribute it to a symbol. Got suspicious. Recalled that I

Urgent: Secret Backdoor Found in XZ Utils Library, Impacts Major Linux Distros

Mar 30, 2024 Linux / Supply Chain Attack
Red Hat on Friday released an "urgent security alert" warning that two versions of a popular data compression library called  XZ Utils  (previously LZMA Utils) have been backdoored with malicious code designed to allow unauthorized remote access. The software supply chain compromise, tracked as  CVE-2024-3094 , has a CVSS score of 10.0, indicating maximum severity. It impacts XZ Utils versions 5.6.0 (released February 24) and 5.6.1 (released March 9). "Through a series of complex obfuscations, the liblzma build process extracts a prebuilt object file from a disguised test file existing in the source code, which is then used to modify specific functions in the liblzma code," the IBM subsidiary  said  in an advisory. "This results in a modified liblzma library that can be used by any software linked against this library, intercepting and modifying the data interaction with this library." Specifically, the nefarious code baked into the code is  designed

Hackers Hijack GitHub Accounts in Supply Chain Attack Affecting Top-gg and Others

Mar 25, 2024 Supply Chain Attack / Cryptocurrency
Unidentified adversaries orchestrated a sophisticated attack campaign that has impacted several individual developers as well as the GitHub organization account associated with Top.gg, a Discord bot discovery site. "The threat actors used multiple TTPs in this attack, including account takeover via stolen browser cookies, contributing malicious code with verified commits, setting up a custom Python mirror, and publishing malicious packages to the PyPI registry," Checkmarx  said  in a technical report shared with The Hacker News. The software supply chain attack is said to have led to the theft of sensitive information, including passwords, credentials, and other valuable data. Some aspects of the campaign were  previously   disclosed  at the start of the month by an Egypt-based developer named Mohammed Dief. It chiefly entailed setting up a clever typosquat of the official PyPI domain known as "files. python hosted[.]org," giving it the name "files. pypi ho

Hackers Using Cracked Software on GitHub to Spread RisePro Info Stealer

Mar 16, 2024 Malware / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have found a number of GitHub repositories offering cracked software that are used to deliver an information stealer called RisePro. The campaign, codenamed  gitgub , includes 17 repositories associated with 11 different accounts, according to G DATA. The repositories in question have since been taken down by the Microsoft-owned subsidiary. "The repositories look similar, featuring a README.md file with the promise of free cracked software," the German cybersecurity company  said . "Green and red circles are commonly used on Github to display the status of automatic builds. Gitgub threat actors added four green Unicode circles to their README.md that pretend to display a status alongside a current date and provide a sense of legitimacy and recency." The list of repositories is as follows, with each of them pointing to a download link ("digitalxnetwork[.]com") containing a RAR archive file - andreastanaj/AVAST andreastanaj

New Python-Based Snake Info Stealer Spreading Through Facebook Messages

Mar 07, 2024 Vulnerability / Information Stealer
Facebook messages are being used by threat actors to distribute a Python-based information stealer dubbed Snake that's designed to capture credentials and other sensitive data. "The credentials harvested from unsuspecting users are transmitted to different platforms such as Discord, GitHub, and Telegram," Cybereason researcher Kotaro Ogino  said  in a technical report. Details about the campaign  first emerged  on the social media platform X in August 2023. The attacks entail sending prospective users seemingly innocuous RAR or ZIP archive files that, upon opening, activate the infection sequence. The intermediate stages involve two downloaders – a batch script and a cmd script – with the latter responsible for downloading and executing the information stealer from an actor-controlled GitLab repository. Cybereason said it detected three different variants of the stealer, the third one being an executable assembled by PyInstaller. The malware, for its part, is designed to gather d

GitHub Rolls Out Default Secret Scanning Push Protection for Public Repositories

Mar 01, 2024 DevSecOps / Cybersecurity
GitHub on Thursday announced that it's enabling secret scanning push protection by default for all pushes to public repositories. "This means that when a supported secret is detected in any push to a public repository, you will have the option to remove the secret from your commits or, if you deem the secret safe, bypass the block," Eric Tooley and Courtney Claessens  said . Push protection  was  first piloted  as an opt-in feature in August 2023, although it has been under testing since April 2022. It became  generally available  in May 2023. The  secret scanning  feature is designed to identify over  200 token types  and patterns from more than 180 service providers in order to prevent their fraudulent use by malicious actors.  The development comes nearly five months after the Microsoft subsidiary  expanded  secret scanning to include validity checks for popular services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google, and Slack. It also follows the discovery of an ongoi

Open-Source Xeno RAT Trojan Emerges as a Potent Threat on GitHub

Feb 27, 2024 Malware / Network Security
An "intricately designed" remote access trojan (RAT) called  Xeno RAT  has been made available on GitHub, making it easily accessible to other actors at no extra cost. Written in C# and compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems, the open-source RAT comes with a "comprehensive set of features for remote system management," according to its developer, who goes by the name moom825. It includes a SOCKS5 reverse proxy and the ability to record real-time audio, as well as incorporate a hidden virtual network computing ( hVNC ) module along the lines of  DarkVNC , which allows attackers to gain remote access to an infected computer. "Xeno RAT is developed entirely from scratch, ensuring a unique and tailored approach to remote access tools," the developer  states  in the project description. Another notable aspect is that it has a builder that enables the creation of bespoke variants of the malware.  It's worth noting that moom825 is a

Dormant PyPI Package Compromised to Spread Nova Sentinel Malware

Feb 23, 2024 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
A dormant package available on the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository was updated nearly after two years to propagate an information stealer malware called Nova Sentinel. The package, named  django-log-tracker , was first published to PyPI in April 2022, according to software supply chain security firm Phylum, which  detected  an anomalous update to the library on February 21, 2024. While the  linked GitHub repository  hasn't been updated since April 10, 2022, the introduction of a malicious update suggests a likely compromise of the PyPI account belonging to the developer. Django-log-tracker has been  downloaded 3,866 times  to date, with the rogue version (1.0.4) downloaded 107 times on the date it was published. The package is no longer available for download from PyPI. "In the malicious update, the attacker stripped the package of most of its original content, leaving only an __init__.py and example.py file behind," the company said. The changes, simple and

Italian Businesses Hit by Weaponized USBs Spreading Cryptojacking Malware

Jan 31, 2024 Cryptocurrency / Cybersecurity
A financially motivated threat actor known as  UNC4990  is leveraging weaponized USB devices as an initial infection vector to target organizations in Italy. Google-owned Mandiant said the attacks single out multiple industries, including health, transportation, construction, and logistics. "UNC4990 operations generally involve widespread USB infection followed by the deployment of the EMPTYSPACE downloader," the company  said  in a Tuesday report. "During these operations, the cluster relies on third-party websites such as GitHub, Vimeo, and Ars Technica to host encoded additional stages, which it downloads and decodes via PowerShell early in the execution chain." UNC4990, active since late 2020, is assessed to be operating out of Italy based on the extensive use of Italian infrastructure for command-and-control (C2) purposes. It's currently not known if UNC4990 functions only as an initial access facilitator for other actors. The end goal of the threat

Malicious PyPI Packages Slip WhiteSnake InfoStealer Malware onto Windows Machines

Jan 29, 2024 PyPI Repository / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have identified malicious packages on the open-source Python Package Index (PyPI) repository that deliver an information stealing malware called WhiteSnake Stealer on Windows systems. The malware-laced packages are named nigpal, figflix, telerer, seGMM, fbdebug, sGMM, myGens, NewGends, and TestLibs111. They have been uploaded by a threat actor named "WS." "These packages incorporate Base64-encoded source code of PE or other Python scripts within their setup.py files," Fortinet FortiGuard Labs  said  in an analysis published last week. "Depending on the victim devices' operating system, the final malicious payload is dropped and executed when these Python packages are installed." While Windows systems are infected with WhiteSnake Stealer, compromised Linux hosts are served a Python script designed to harvest information. The activity, which predominantly targets Windows users, overlaps with a  prior campaign  that JFrog
Malicious NPM Packages Exfiltrate Hundreds of Developer SSH Keys via GitHub

Malicious NPM Packages Exfiltrate Hundreds of Developer SSH Keys via GitHub

Jan 23, 2024 Software Security / Supply Chain
Two malicious packages discovered on the npm package registry have been found to leverage GitHub to store Base64-encrypted SSH keys stolen from developer systems on which they were installed. The modules named  warbeast2000  and  kodiak2k  were published at the start of the month, attracting  412  and  1,281 downloads  before they were taken down by the npm maintainers. The most recent downloads occurred on January 21, 2024. Software supply chain security firm ReversingLabs, which made the discovery, said there were eight different versions of warbeast2000 and more than 30 versions of kodiak2k. Both the modules are designed to run a postinstall script after installation, each capable of retrieving and executing a different JavaScript file. While warbeast2000 attempts to access the private SSH key, kodiak2k is designed to look for a key named "meow," raising the possibility that the threat actor likely used a placeholder name during the early stages of the development.
MavenGate Attack Could Let Hackers Hijack Java and Android via Abandoned Libraries

MavenGate Attack Could Let Hackers Hijack Java and Android via Abandoned Libraries

Jan 22, 2024 Software Security / Supply Chain
Several public and popular libraries abandoned but still used in Java and Android applications have been found susceptible to a new software supply chain attack method called MavenGate. "Access to projects can be hijacked through domain name purchases and since most default build configurations are vulnerable, it would be difficult or even impossible to know whether an attack was being performed," Oversecured  said  in an analysis published last week. Successful exploitation of these shortcomings could allow nefarious actors to hijack artifacts in dependencies and inject malicious code into the application, and worse, even compromise the build process through a malicious plugin. The mobile security firm added that all Maven-based technologies, including Gradle, are vulnerable to the attack, and that it sent reports to more than 200 companies, including Google, Facebook, Signal, Amazon, and others. Apache Maven is  chiefly used  for building and managing Java-based projec

TensorFlow CI/CD Flaw Exposed Supply Chain to Poisoning Attacks

Jan 18, 2024 Supply Chain Attacks / AI Security
Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) misconfigurations discovered in the open-source  TensorFlow  machine learning framework could have been exploited to orchestrate  supply chain attacks . The misconfigurations could be abused by an attacker to "conduct a supply chain compromise of TensorFlow releases on GitHub and PyPi by compromising TensorFlow's build agents via a malicious pull request," Praetorian researchers Adnan Khan and John Stawinski  said  in a report published this week. Successful exploitation of these issues could permit an external attacker to upload malicious releases to the GitHub repository, gain remote code execution on the self-hosted GitHub runner, and even retrieve a GitHub Personal Access Token (PAT) for the  tensorflow-jenkins user . TensorFlow uses GitHub Actions to automate the software build, test, and deployment pipeline. Runners, which refer to machines that execute jobs in a GitHub Actions workflow, can be either self-
