There's something "Human" to Social Engineering !

Oct 20, 2011
There's something " Human " to  Social Engineering ! At the psychological skill of Social Engineering Social engineering is the human side of breaking into corporate or personal pc's to gain information. Even companies that have an authentication process, firewalls, vpn's and network monitoring software are subject to the skill of a good social engineer. In hacking we rely on our technical skill and in social engineering it is a game of getting your subject to tell you what you want to get into their system. Social engineering has been employed since the beginning of mankind, the art of trickery or deception for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or in modern times, computer system access. In most cases today the social engineer never comes face to face with their target. In social engineering we exploit the attributes of the human decision making process known as " cognitive biases ." That was the question asked by the Team of Social-engineer.org Gu...

Hacker reveals How He Could have Hacked Multiple Facebook Accounts

Aug 27, 2016
How to Hack a Facebook Account? That's possibly the most frequently asked question on the Internet today. Though the solution is hard to find, a white hat hacker has just proven how easy it is to hack multiple Facebook accounts with some basic computer skills. Your Facebook account can be hacked, no matter how strong your password is or how much extra security measures you have taken. No joke! Gurkirat Singh from California recently discovered a loophole in Facebook's password reset mechanism that could have given hackers complete access to the victim's Facebook account, allowing them to view message conversations and payment card details, post anything and do whatever the real account holder can. The attack vector is simple, though the execution is quite difficult. The issue, Gurkirat ( @GurkiratSpeca ) says, actually resides in the way Facebook allows you to reset your password. The social network uses an algorithm that generates a random 6-digit passcode ‒ ...

What Does It Take To Be a Cybersecurity Researcher?

What Does It Take To Be a Cybersecurity Researcher?

Apr 12, 2021
Behind the strategies and solutions needed to counter today's cyber threats are—dedicated cybersecurity researchers. They spend their lives dissecting code and analyzing incident reports to discover how to stop the bad guys.  But what drives these specialists? To understand the motivations for why these cybersecurity pros do what they do, we decided to talk with cybersecurity analysts from around the world. To get viewpoints from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, we recently spoke with a team of researchers from Acronis' global network of Cyber Protection Operations Centers (CPOCs):  Candid Wüest , VP of Cyber Protection Research who is based in Switzerland;  Alexander Ivanyuk , Senior Director, Product, and Technology Positioning, who is based in Singapore; and two Cybersecurity Analysts,  Topher Tebow  and  Blake Collins , who are both based in the U.S. The conversation yielded some interesting insights into their views of the world, how they app...
Supply Chain Attacks and Critical Infrastructure: How CISA Helps Secure a Nation's Crown Jewels

Supply Chain Attacks and Critical Infrastructure: How CISA Helps Secure a Nation's Crown Jewels

Apr 06, 2023 SCADA / Network Security
Critical infrastructure attacks are a preferred target for cyber criminals. Here's why and what's being done to protect them. What is Critical Infrastructure and Why is It Attacked? Critical infrastructure is the physical and digital assets, systems and networks that are vital to national security, the economy, public health, or safety. It can be government- or privately-owned. According to Etay Maor, Senior Director Security Strategy at  Cato Networks , "It's interesting to note critical infrastructure doesn't necessarily have to be power plants or electricity. A nation's monetary system or even a global monetary system can be and should be considered a critical infrastructure as well." These qualities make critical infrastructure a preferred target for cyber attacks. If critical infrastructure is disrupted, the impact is significant. In some cases, such cyber attacks on critical infrastructure have become another means of modern warfare. But unlike ...

In search of the Twitter Hacker !

Mar 12, 2011
Labor woes. Steroids. Corrupt college programs. There are many serious issues facing the sports world. But they all are a distant second to one other. It's someone so skilled, so savvy, that you may not have even heard of him. The Twitter Hacker. Let's start at the beginning. Or what could be the beginning. The Twitter Hacker is so stealthy and subtle that there's no way to know when he began hacking into the accounts of our athletes. But one of the first cases that caught some attention came last May when the following appeared on the Twitter account of Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce after the Celtics took a 2-0 lead over the Magic in the Eastern Conference finals: "Anybody got a BROOM?" Ha! A confident athlete talking trash. Nothing remotely out of the ordinary there. But soon after, Pierce's digital media rep claimed that tweet did not come from Pierce, claiming the "BROOM" tweet was "courtesy of a hack." And that they were ...
