Yahoo! Hack! How It Took Just One-Click to Execute Biggest Data Breach in History

Yahoo! Hack! How It Took Just One-Click to Execute Biggest Data Breach in History

Mar 16, 2017
In the digital world, it just takes one click to get the keys to the kingdom. Do you know spear-phishing was the only secret weapon behind the biggest data breach in the history? It's true, as one of the Yahoo employees fell victim to a simple phishing attack and clicked one wrong link that let the hackers gain a foothold in the company's internal networks. You may be familiar with phishing attacks — an attempt to steal user credentials or financial data — while, Spear-phishing is a targeted form of phishing in which attackers trick employees or vendors into providing remote-access credentials or opening a malicious attachment containing an exploit or payload. Here's how the Yahoo's massive data breach was traced back to human error and who were the alleged masterminds behind this hack. On Wednesday, the US government charged two Russian spies (Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin) and two criminal hackers (Alexsey Belan and Karim Baratov) in connection with the 20...

Hacker Steals $8.4 Million in Ethereum (4th Heist In A Month)

Jul 25, 2017
More Ethereum Stolen! An unknown hacker has just stolen nearly $8.4 Million worth of Ethereum – one of the most popular and increasingly valuable cryptocurrencies – in yet another Ethereum hack that hit Veritaseum's Initial Coin Offering (ICO). This incident marks as the fourth Ethereum hack this month and second cyber attack on an ICO, following a theft of $7 Million worth of Ether tokens during the hack of Israeli startup CoinDash's initial coin offering last week. A few days ago, a hacker also stole nearly $32 Million worth of Ethereum from wallet accounts by exploiting a critical vulnerability in Parity's Ethereum Wallet software, which followed a $1 Million worth of Ether and Bitcoins heist in crypto currency exchange Bithumb earlier this month. Now, Veritaseum has confirmed that a hacker stole $8.4 Million in Ether (ETH) from its ICO this Sunday, July 23. "We were hacked, possibly by a group. The hack seemed to be very sophisticated, but there...

Microsoft Windows Zero-Day Vulnerability "CVE-2014-4114" Used to Hack NATO

Oct 14, 2014
Once again a Russian cyber espionage group has gained media attention by exploiting a Zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft's Windows operating system to spy on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ), Ukrainian and Polish government agencies, and a variety of sensitive European industries over the last year. ZERO-DAY VULNERABILITY IN MICROSOFT WINDOWS Researchers at cyber intelligence firm iSight Partners have discovered a zero-day vulnerability that impacts desktop and server versions of Windows, from Vista and Server 2008 to current versions. They also uncovered a latest cyber-spying campaign - suspected to be based in Russia - that uses this Zero-day vulnerability ( CVE-2014-4114 ) to target government leaders and institutions for nearly five years. The recently detected Russian hacking group is dubbed as " Sandworm Team " by iSIGHT Partners because it found references to the Frank Herbert's " Dune " science fiction series in the malici...
Cracking WiFi Passwords By Hacking into Smart Kettles

Cracking WiFi Passwords By Hacking into Smart Kettles

Oct 21, 2015
Hackers have come after your phone, your computer, and your car . Now hackers are coming after your home refrigerators, Smart TVs , and eventually KETTLES . Yes, your kettle turns out good for more than just heating up water or making coffee for you– they are potentially a good way for hackers to breach your wireless network. Also Read:   How to Weaponize your Cat to Hack Neighbours' Wi-Fi Passwords . Ken Munro, a security researcher at PenTest Partners, has managed to hack into an insecure iKettle , which was proclaimed " the world's first WiFi kettle " by its developers, and stolen a home's Wi-Fi password. Besides boiling water, the iKettle can connect to a user's home WiFi network. It also comes inbuilt with an Android and iOS app that allows the user to switch on the kettle and boil the water from other location. However, the biggest security flaw resides in the Android iKettle app that keeps the kettle's password as the defa...
Hacking Scenarios: How Hackers Choose Their Victims

Hacking Scenarios: How Hackers Choose Their Victims

Jun 07, 2022
Enforcing the "double-extortion" technique aka pay-now-or-get-breached emerged as a head-turner last year.  May 6th, 2022 is a recent example. The State Department said the Conti strain of ransomware was the most costly in terms of payments made by victims as of January . Conti, a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) program, is one of the most notorious ransomware groups and has been responsible for infecting hundreds of servers with malware to gain corporate data or digital damage systems, essentially spreading misery to individuals and hospitals, businesses, government agencies and more all over the world. So, how different is a  ransomware attack  like Conti from the infamous "WannaCry" or "NotPetya"? While other Ransomware variants can spread fast and encrypt files within short time frames, Conti ransomware has demonstrated unmatched speed by which it can access victims' systems. Given the recent spate of data breaches, it is extremely challengin...
Here's How CIA Spies On Its Intelligence Liaison Partners Around the World

Here's How CIA Spies On Its Intelligence Liaison Partners Around the World

Aug 24, 2017
WikiLeaks has just published another Vault 7 leak, revealing how the CIA spies on their intelligence partners around the world, including FBI, DHS and the NSA, to covertly collect data from their systems. The CIA offers a biometric collection system—with predefined hardware, operating system, and software—to its intelligence liaison partners around the world that helps them voluntary share collected biometric data on their systems with each other. But since no agency share all of its collected biometric data with others, the Office of Technical Services (OTS) within CIA developed a tool to secretly exfiltrate data collections from their systems. Dubbed ExpressLane , the newly revealed CIA project details about the spying software that the CIA agents manually installs as part of a routine upgrade to the Biometric system. The leaked CIA documents reveal that the OTS officers, who maintain biometric collection systems installed at liaison services, visit their premises and se...

National Security Agency (NSA) to Investigate Nasdaq Hack

National Security Agency (NSA) to Investigate Nasdaq Hack

Mar 30, 2011
The National Security Agency has been called in to help investigate recent hack attacks against the company that runs the Nasdaq stock market, according to a news report. The agency's precise role in the investigation hasn't been disclosed, but its involvement suggests the October 2010 attacks may have been more severe than Nasdaq OMX Group has admitted, or it could have involved a nation-state, according to sources that spoke with Businessweek. "By bringing in the NSA, that means they think they're either dealing with a state-sponsored attack or it's an extraordinarily capable criminal organization," Joel Brenner, former head of U.S. counterintelligence in the Bush and Obama administrations, told the publication. He added that the agency rarely gets involved in investigations of company breaches. Last year, the NSA was called in by Google to help the company secure its network after it was targeted in a sophisticated attack. Regarding the Nasdaq breach, in addition to the Secr...

Two more Comodo registration authority accounts compromised ! Certification company's humiliation drags on as hacker scalps two more Comodo registration authority accounts The Iranian hacker that managed to trick Comodo into issuing nine fraudulent certificates appears to have compromised two more registration authority accounts, raising questions of what exactly is going on at the certificate authority. "Two further RA accounts have since been compromised," wrote Robin Alden, CTO of Comodo Security, on the mozilla-dev-security-policy mailing list. The partners have had their registration authority privileges withdrawn, Alden said. Comodo Retrofitting Broken Padlocks Alden made the announcement in an email addressing questions posed by the members of the mailing list. "No further mis-issued certificates have resulted from these compromises," Alden said. Incomplete 'Stagefright' Security Patch Leaves Android Vulnerable to Text Hack

Aug 14, 2015
Wanna hack someone's Android smartphone by sending just an MMS message? Yes, you can, because Google's patch for the Stagefright vulnerability in hundreds of Millions of Android devices is BUGGY. Last week, Google issued an official patch for Stagefright vulnerability that affects 95 percent of Android devices running version 2.2 to version 5.1 of the operating system, an estimated 950 Million Android devices in use worldwide. But, the patch is so flawed that hackers can still exploit the Stagefright vulnerability (CVE-2015-3824) anyways. "The [original] patch is four lines of code and was (presumably) reviewed by Google engineers prior to shipping," researchers at Exodus Intelligence wrote in a blog post published Thursday. "The public at large believes the current patch protects them when it, in fact, does not." Buggy Patch Issued by Google The patch doesn't fix the vulnerability, allowing booby-trapped MP4 videos that supplied...

Iran and Hezbollah Hackers Launch Attacks to Influence Israel-Hamas Narrative

Feb 20, 2024 Hacktivist / Cyber Attack
Hackers backed by Iran and Hezbollah staged cyber attacks designed to undercut public support for the Israel-Hamas war after October 2023. This includes destructive attacks against key Israeli organizations, hack-and-leak operations targeting entities in Israel and the U.S., phishing campaigns designed to steal intelligence, and information operations to turn public opinion against Israel. Iran accounted for nearly 80% of all government-backed phishing activity targeting Israel in the six months leading up to the October 7 attacks, Google said in a new report. "Hack-and-leak and information operations remain a key component in these and related threat actors' efforts to telegraph intent and capability throughout the war, both to their adversaries and to other audiences that they seek to influence," the tech giant  said . But what's also notable about the Israel-Hamas conflict is that the cyber operations appear to be executed independently of the kinetic and batt...

Mitsubishi Outlander Car's Theft Alarm Hacked through Wi-Fi

Jun 06, 2016
From GPS system to satellite radio to wireless locks, today vehicles are more connected to networks than ever, and so they are more hackable than ever. It is not new for security researchers to hack connected cars . Latest in the series of hackable connected cars is the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). A security expert has discovered vulnerabilities in the Mitsubishi Outlander's Wi-Fi console that could allow hackers to access the vehicle remotely and turn off car alarms before potentially stealing it. The company has embedded the WiFi module inside the car so that its users can connect with their Mitsubishi mobile app to this WiFi and send commands to the car. Researchers from security penetration testing firm Pen Test Partners discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander uses a weak WiFi access security key to communicates with the driver's phone. The key to getting into the Wi-Fi can be cracked through a brute force attack (" on a 4 x GPU c...

Hackers Steal Over $600 Million Worth of Cryptocurrencies from Poly Network

Aug 11, 2021
Hackers have siphoned $611 million worth of cryptocurrencies from a blockchain-based financial network in what's believed to be one of the largest heists targeting the digital asset industry, putting it ahead of breaches targeting exchanges Coincheck and Mt. Gox in recent years. Poly Network, a China-based cross-chain decentralized finance (DeFi) platform for swapping tokens across multiple blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, on Tuesday  disclosed  unidentified actors had exploited a vulnerability in its system to plunder thousands of digital tokens such as Ether. "The hacker exploited a vulnerability between contract calls," Poly Network said.  The stolen Binance Chain, Ethereum, and Polygon assets are said to have been transferred to three different wallets, with the company urging miners of affected blockchain and centralized crypto exchanges to blocklist tokens coming from the addresses. The three wallet addresses are as follows -  Ethereum: 0xC8a6...
