'Stargazer Goblin' Creates 3,000 Fake GitHub Accounts for Malware Spread

'Stargazer Goblin' Creates 3,000 Fake GitHub Accounts for Malware Spread

Jul 29, 2024 Malware / Network Security
A threat actor known as Stargazer Goblin has set up a network of inauthentic GitHub accounts to fuel a Distribution-as-a-Service (DaaS) that propagates a variety of information-stealing malware and netting them $100,000 in illicit profits over the past year. The network, which comprises over 3,000 accounts on the cloud-based code hosting platform, spans thousands of repositories that are used to share malicious links or malware, per Check Point, which has dubbed it "Stargazers Ghost Network." Some of the malware families propagated using this method include Atlantida Stealer, Rhadamanthys, RisePro, Lumma Stealer, and RedLine, with the bogus accounts also engaged in starring, forking, watching, and subscribing to malicious repositories to give them a veneer of legitimacy. The network is believed to have been active since August 2022 in some preliminary form, although an advertisement for the DaaS wasn't spotted in the dark until early July 2023. "Threat actors no...
Second Sha1-Hulud Wave Affects 25,000+ Repositories via npm Preinstall Credential Theft

Second Sha1-Hulud Wave Affects 25,000+ Repositories via npm Preinstall Credential Theft

Nov 24, 2025 Cloud Security / Vulnerability
Multiple security vendors are sounding the alarm about a second wave of attacks targeting the npm registry in a manner that's reminiscent of the Shai-Hulud attack . The new supply chain campaign, dubbed Sha1-Hulud , has compromised hundreds of npm packages, according to reports from Aikido , HelixGuard , JFrog , Koi Security , ReversingLabs , SafeDep , Socket , Step Security , and Wiz . The trojanized npm packages were uploaded to npm between November 21 and 23, 2025. The attack has impacted popular packages from Zapier, ENS Domains, PostHog, and Postman, among others. "The campaign introduces a new variant that executes malicious code during the preinstall phase, significantly increasing potential exposure in build and runtime environments," Wiz researchers Hila Ramati, Merav Bar, Gal Benmocha, and Gili Tikochinski said. Like the Shai-Hulud attack that came to light in September 2025, the latest activity also publishes stolen secrets to GitHub, this time with the rep...
Hackers Abusing GitHub to Evade Detection and Control Compromised Hosts

Hackers Abusing GitHub to Evade Detection and Control Compromised Hosts

Dec 19, 2023 Software Security / Threat intelligence
Threat actors are increasingly making use of GitHub for malicious purposes through novel methods, including abusing secret Gists and issuing malicious commands via git commit messages. "Malware authors occasionally place their samples in services like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Discord to host second stage malware and sidestep detection tools," ReversingLabs researcher Karlo Zanki  said  in a report shared with The Hacker News. "But lately, we have observed the increasing use of the GitHub open-source development platform for hosting malware." Legitimate public services are  known  to be  used  by  threat actors  for hosting malware and acting as  dead drop resolvers  to fetch the actual command-and-control (C2) address. While using public sources for C2 does not make them immune to takedowns, they do offer the benefit of allowing threat actors to easily create attack infrastructure that's both inexpensive and reliable. ...

200+ Trojanized GitHub Repositories Found in Campaign Targeting Gamers and Developers

200+ Trojanized GitHub Repositories Found in Campaign Targeting Gamers and Developers

Jun 20, 2025 Malware / Software Security
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new campaign in which the threat actors have published more than 67 GitHub repositories that claim to offer Python-based hacking tools, but deliver trojanized payloads instead. The activity, codenamed Banana Squad by ReversingLabs, is assessed to be a continuation of a rogue Python campaign that was identified in 2023 as targeting the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository with bogus packages that were downloaded over 75,000 times and came with information-stealing capabilities on Windows systems. The findings build on a previous report from the SANS's Internet Storm Center in November 2024 that detailed a supposed "steam-account-checker" tool hosted on GitHub, which incorporated stealthy features to download additional Python payloads that can inject malicious code into the Exodus cryptocurrency wallet app and harvest sensitive data to an external server ("dieserbenni[.]ru"). Further analysis of the repository a...

New Malware Loaders Use Call Stack Spoofing, GitHub C2, and .NET Reactor for Stealth

Apr 02, 2025 Threat Detection / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered an updated version of a malware loader called Hijack Loader that implements new features to evade detection and establish persistence on compromised systems. "Hijack Loader released a new module that implements call stack spoofing to hide the origin of function calls (e.g., API and system calls)," Zscaler ThreatLabz researcher Muhammed Irfan V A said in an analysis. "Hijack Loader added a new module to perform anti-VM checks to detect malware analysis environments and sandboxes." Hijack Loader, first discovered in 2023, offers the ability to deliver second-stage payloads such as information stealer malware. It also comes with a variety of modules to bypass security software and inject malicious code. Hijack Loader is tracked by the broader cybersecurity community under the names DOILoader, GHOSTPULSE, IDAT Loader, and SHADOWLADDER. In October 2024, HarfangLab and Elastic Security Labs detailed Hijack Loader campaigns t...
Researchers Uncover Python Package Targeting Crypto Wallets with Malicious Code

Researchers Uncover Python Package Targeting Crypto Wallets with Malicious Code

Oct 30, 2024 Cybercrim / Cryptocurrency
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new malicious Python package that masquerades as a cryptocurrency trading tool but harbors functionality designed to steal sensitive data and drain assets from victims' crypto wallets. The package, named "CryptoAITools," is said to have been distributed via both Python Package Index (PyPI) and bogus GitHub repositories. It was downloaded over 1,300 times before being taken down from PyPI. "The malware activated automatically upon installation, targeting both Windows and macOS operating systems," Checkmarx said in a new report shared with The Hacker News. "A deceptive graphical user interface (GUI) was used to distract vic4ms while the malware performed its malicious ac4vi4es in the background." The package is designed to unleash its malicious behavior immediately after installation through code injected into its "__init__.py" file that first determines if the target system is Windows or macOS ...
Coinbase Initially Targeted in GitHub Actions Supply Chain Attack; 218 Repositories' CI/CD Secrets Exposed

Coinbase Initially Targeted in GitHub Actions Supply Chain Attack; 218 Repositories' CI/CD Secrets Exposed

Mar 23, 2025 Supply Chain / Vulnerability
The supply chain attack involving the GitHub Action "tj-actions/changed-files" started as a highly-targeted attack against one of Coinbase's open-source projects, before evolving into something more widespread in scope. "The payload was focused on exploiting the public CI/CD flow of one of their open source projects – agentkit, probably with the purpose of leveraging it for further compromises," Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said in a report. "However, the attacker was not able to use Coinbase secrets or publish packages." The incident came to light on March 14, 2025, when it was found that "tj-actions/changed-files" was compromised to inject code that leaked sensitive secrets from repositories that ran the workflow. It has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2025-30066 (CVSS score: 8.6). According to Endor Labs, 218 GitHub repositories are estimated to have exposed their secrets due to the supply chain attack, and a majority of the leak...

Hackers Hijack GitHub Accounts in Supply Chain Attack Affecting Top-gg and Others

Mar 25, 2024 Supply Chain Attack / Cryptocurrency
Unidentified adversaries orchestrated a sophisticated attack campaign that has impacted several individual developers as well as the GitHub organization account associated with Top.gg, a Discord bot discovery site. "The threat actors used multiple TTPs in this attack, including account takeover via stolen browser cookies, contributing malicious code with verified commits, setting up a custom Python mirror, and publishing malicious packages to the PyPI registry," Checkmarx  said  in a technical report shared with The Hacker News. The software supply chain attack is said to have led to the theft of sensitive information, including passwords, credentials, and other valuable data. Some aspects of the campaign were  previously   disclosed  at the start of the month by an Egypt-based developer named Mohammed Dief. It chiefly entailed setting up a clever typosquat of the official PyPI domain known as "files. python hosted[.]org," giving it the name "files. pypi ho...

LastPass Warns of Fake Repositories Infecting macOS with Atomic Infostealer

Sep 20, 2025 Software Security / Malware
LastPass is warning of an ongoing, widespread information stealer campaign targeting Apple macOS users through fake GitHub repositories that distribute malware-laced programs masquerading as legitimate tools. "In the case of LastPass, the fraudulent repositories redirected potential victims to a repository that downloads the Atomic infostealer malware," researchers Alex Cox, Mike Kosak, and Stephanie Schneider from the LastPass Threat Intelligence, Mitigation, and Escalation (TIME) team said . Beyond LastPass, some of the popular tools impersonated in the campaign include 1Password, Basecamp, Dropbox, Gemini, Hootsuite, Notion, Obsidian, Robinhood, Salesloft, SentinelOne, Shopify, Thunderbird, and TweetDeck, among others. All the GiHub repositories are designed to target macOS systems. The attacks involve the use of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) poisoning to push links to malicious GitHub sites on top of search results on Bing and Google, which then instruct users ...
GPUGate Malware Uses Google Ads and Fake GitHub Commits to Target IT Firms

GPUGate Malware Uses Google Ads and Fake GitHub Commits to Target IT Firms

Sep 08, 2025 Malvertising / Encryption
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a new sophisticated malware campaign that leverages paid ads on search engines like Google to deliver malware to unsuspecting users looking for popular tools like GitHub Desktop. While malvertising campaigns have become commonplace in recent years, the latest activity gives it a little twist of its own: Embedding a GitHub commit into a page URL containing altered links that point to attacker-controlled infrastructure. "Even when a link seems to point to a reputable platform such as GitHub, the underlying URL can be manipulated to resolve to a counterfeit site," Arctic Wolf said in a report published last week. Exclusively targeting IT and software development companies within Western Europe since at least December 2024, the links within the rogue GitHub commit are designed to funnel users to a malicious download hosted on a lookalike domain ("gitpage[.]app"). The activity was first detected on August 19, 2025. The first...

Malicious Nx Packages in 's1ngularity' Attack Leaked 2,349 GitHub, Cloud, and AI Credentials

Aug 28, 2025 AI Security / Cloud Security
The maintainers of the nx build system have alerted users to a supply chain attack that allowed attackers to publish malicious versions of the popular npm package and other auxiliary plugins with data-gathering capabilities. "Malicious versions of the nx package, as well as some supporting plugin packages, were published to npm, containing code that scans the file system, collects credentials, and posts them to GitHub as a repo under the user's accounts," the maintainers said in an advisory published Wednesday. Nx is an open-source, technology-agnostic build platform that's designed to manage codebases. It's advertised as an "AI-first build platform that connects everything from your editor to CI [continuous integration]." The npm package has over 3.5 million weekly downloads. The list of affected packages and versions is below. These versions have since been removed from the npm registry. The compromise of the nx package took place on August 26, 20...
GitHub Updates Policy to Remove Exploit Code When Used in Active Attacks

GitHub Updates Policy to Remove Exploit Code When Used in Active Attacks

Jun 05, 2021
Code-hosting platform GitHub Friday officially announced a series of updates to the  site's policies  that delve into how the company deals with malware and exploit code uploaded to its service. "We explicitly permit dual-use security technologies and content related to research into vulnerabilities, malware, and exploits," the Microsoft-owned company  said . "We understand that many security research projects on GitHub are dual-use and broadly beneficial to the security community. We assume positive intention and use of these projects to promote and drive improvements across the ecosystem." Stating that it will not allow the use of GitHub in direct support of unlawful attacks or malware campaigns that cause technical harm, the company said it may take steps to disrupt ongoing attacks that leverage the platform as an exploit or a malware content delivery network (CDN). To that end, users are refrained from uploading, posting, hosting, or transmitting any co...
GitHub, Telegram Bots, and ASCII QR Codes Abused in New Wave of Phishing Attacks

GitHub, Telegram Bots, and ASCII QR Codes Abused in New Wave of Phishing Attacks

Oct 11, 2024 Malware / Financial Security
A new tax-themed malware campaign targeting insurance and finance sectors has been observed leveraging GitHub links in phishing email messages as a way to bypass security measures and deliver Remcos RAT, indicating that the method is gaining traction among threat actors. "In this campaign, legitimate repositories such as the open-source tax filing software, UsTaxes, HMRC, and InlandRevenue were used instead of unknown, low-star repositories," Cofense researcher Jacob Malimban said . "Using trusted repositories to deliver malware is relatively new compared to threat actors creating their own malicious GitHub repositories. These malicious GitHub links can be associated with any repository that allows comments." Central to the attack chain is the abuse of GitHub infrastructure for staging the malicious payloads. One variation of the technique, first disclosed by OALABS Research in March 2024, involves threat actors opening a GitHub issue on well-known repositories...

Cross-Platform JavaScript Stealer Targets Crypto Wallets in New Lazarus Group Campaign

Feb 05, 2025 Cryptocurrency / Data Breach
The North Korea-linked Lazarus Group has been linked to an active campaign that leverages fake LinkedIn job offers in the cryptocurrency and travel sectors to deliver malware capable of infecting Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. According to cybersecurity company Bitdefender, the scam begins with a message sent on a professional social media network, enticing them with the promise of remote work, part-time flexibility, and good pay. "Once the target expresses interest, the 'hiring process' unfolds, with the scammer requesting a CV or even a personal GitHub repository link," the Romanian firm said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "Although seemingly innocent, these requests can serve nefarious purposes, such as harvesting personal data or lending a veneer of legitimacy to the interaction." Once the requested details are obtained, the attack moves to the next stage where the threat actor, under the guise of a recruiter, shares a lin...
