Chinese Hackers Distributing SMS Bomber Tool with Malware Hidden Inside

Chinese Hackers Distributing SMS Bomber Tool with Malware Hidden Inside

Jun 23, 2022
A threat cluster with ties to a hacking group called Tropic Trooper has been spotted using a previously undocumented malware coded in Nim language to strike targets as part of a newly discovered campaign. The novel loader, dubbed Nimbda, is "bundled with a Chinese language greyware 'SMS Bomber' tool that is most likely illegally distributed in the Chinese-speaking web," Israeli cybersecurity company Check Point  said  in a report. "Whoever crafted the Nim loader took special care to give it the same executable icon as the SMS Bomber that it drops and executes," the researchers said. "Therefore the entire bundle works as a trojanized binary." SMS Bomber, as the name indicates, allows a user to input a phone number (not their own) so as to flood the victim's device with messages and potentially render it unusable in what's a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. The fact that the binary doubles up as SMS Bomber and a backdoor suggests that t...

Edward Snowden at SXSW Conference: Would I do this again?, I Would!

Mar 11, 2014
The Whistleblower and Former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden raised his voice and talked about citizen’s privacy once again. Yes, Snowden, whose leaks last year triggered debate on the massive surveillance conducted by the Government worldwide. In an interview, speaking via Google Hangout at the South by Southwest Interactive conference, SXSW in Austin, Snowden said he has no regrets over his leaks about mass surveillance programs , despite now being unable to return to the US, where he faces a criminal indictment. He said, " Every society has benefited " from the disclosures. “ Would I do this again? The answer is absolutely yes. Regardless of what happens to me, this is something we had a right to know. ” Two BAD-Geeks:  Snowden criticized both Alexander and Michael Hayden, who were his predecessor as the NSA director, and the same two officials who mainly “ harmed our Internet security and actually our national security ...

Water Curse Employs 76 GitHub Accounts to Deliver Multi-Stage Malware Campaign

Jun 18, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have exposed a previously unknown threat actor known as Water Curse that relies on weaponized GitHub repositories to deliver multi-stage malware. "The malware enables data exfiltration (including credentials, browser data, and session tokens), remote access, and long-term persistence on infected systems," Trend Micro researchers Jovit Samaniego, Aira Marcelo, Mohamed Fahmy, and Gabriel Nicoleta said in an analysis published this week. The "broad and sustained" campaign, first spotted last month, set up repositories offering seemingly innocuous penetration testing utilities, such as SMTP email bomber and Sakura-RAT, but harbored within their Visual Studio project configuration files malicious payloads that are designed to siphon sensitive data. Water Curse's arsenal incorporates a wide range of tools and programming languages, underscoring their cross-functional development capabilities to target the supply chain with "develope...

New Bill targets Anonymous Prepaid 'Burner' phones by requiring Registration

New Bill targets Anonymous Prepaid 'Burner' phones by requiring Registration

Mar 26, 2016
Terrorist organisations are increasingly using high-grade encryption technologies to prevent being caught by the law enforcement. But, that was not in the case of last year's Paris attacks that killed 129 people, as Encryption seems to have played little to no role. So, Who was the Real Culprit Behind the Attacks? The 'Burner' Phones. Burner Phones, or Prepaid mobile phones, are often the quick, easy, and anonymous method of communication. All you need to do is head to your nearest big-box store and pick up a cheap prepaid "burner" phone and a phone card. Now you have an entirely useable phone with no ID that could reveal your identity. It seems that these prepaid "burner" phones are a dream tool for terrorist organisations that bring them in bulk and then disposed of each time they make a communication. The same prepaid phones were utilized in the terrorist attacks in Paris late last year. Therefore, by using different phon...
German Police Seek Help In Finding Parcel Bomber With MAC Address

German Police Seek Help In Finding Parcel Bomber With MAC Address

Jan 09, 2019
German police are seeking your help in gathering information related to a MAC address that could lead to the cell phone device used by a DHL blackmailer who last year parceled out bombs at different addresses in Brandenburg and Berlin. Between November 2017 and April 2018, someone used German parcel delivery service DHL to sent out several so-called improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in packets, demanding €10 million worth of bitcoins from the parcel service. In one event, a parcel containing nails, screws, and fireworks explosive powder was received by a pharmacy adjacent to the German Christmas market during 2017 Christmas, which eventually caused the evacuation of the market. German police later discovered a message inside that package in which the blackmailer threatened to send more parcels in the pre-Christmas season unless DHL made a 10 million euro payment in Bitcoin. During the investigation, the German police successfully communicated with the alleged blackmailer m...
Hackers Target MasterCard and Visa in Support of WikiLeaks

Hackers Target MasterCard and Visa in Support of WikiLeaks

Dec 09, 2010
Hackers rushed to defend WikiLeaks on Wednesday, launching attacks on MasterCard, Visa, Swedish prosecutors, a Swiss bank, and others who acted against the site and its jailed founder, Julian Assange. Internet "hacktivists" under the banner "Operation Payback" claimed responsibility in a Twitter message for causing severe technological problems on MasterCard's website. MasterCard had recently severed ties with WikiLeaks. Although MasterCard acknowledged a disruption in its Secure Code system for verifying online payments, spokesman James Issokson assured that consumers could still use their credit cards securely. Later on Wednesday, Visa's website also became inaccessible. These online attacks are part of a broader wave of support for WikiLeaks sweeping the Internet. Twitter was flooded with messages of solidarity for the group, while its Facebook page reached 1 million fans. However, late Wednesday, Operation Payback itself faced difficulties as many of i...
