5 Impactful AWS Vulnerabilities You're Responsible For

5 Impactful AWS Vulnerabilities You're Responsible For

Mar 31, 2025 Intrusion Detection / Vulnerability
If you're using AWS, it's easy to assume your cloud security is handled - but that's a dangerous misconception. AWS secures its own infrastructure, but security within a cloud environment remains the customer’s responsibility. Think of AWS security like protecting a building: AWS provides strong walls and a solid roof, but it's up to the customer to handle the locks, install the alarm systems, and ensure valuables aren't left exposed. In this blog, we'll clarify what AWS doesn't secure, highlight real-world vulnerabilities, and how cloud security scanners like Intruder can help. Understanding the AWS Shared Responsibility Model AWS operates on a Shared Responsibility Model . In simple terms: AWS is responsible for securing the underlying infrastructure (e.g., hardware, networking, data centers) - the "walls and roof." The customer is responsible for securing their data, applications, and configurations within AWS - the "locks and al...
Penetration Testing Your AWS Environment - A CTO's Guide

Penetration Testing Your AWS Environment - A CTO's Guide

Oct 07, 2021
So, you've been thinking about getting a Penetration Test done on your Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. Great! What should that involve exactly?  There are many options available, and knowing what you need will help you make your often limited security budget go as far as possible. Broadly, the key focus areas for most penetration tests involving AWS: Your externally accessible cloud infrastructure Any application(s) you're building or hosting Your internal cloud infrastructure Your AWS configuration itself Secrets management  We'll look at each one, starting with the most important: External Infrastructure The good news here is that, by default, AWS does its best to help you stay secure. For example, the default security groups don't let your EC2 instances receive communication from the outside world unless you actively specify it by adding additional rules. That said, AWS still allows you plenty of rope to hang yourself with if you're not carefu...
The Future of Serverless Security in 2025: From Logs to Runtime Protection

The Future of Serverless Security in 2025: From Logs to Runtime Protection

Nov 28, 2024 Cloud Security / Threat Detection
Serverless environments, leveraging services such as AWS Lambda, offer incredible benefits in terms of scalability, efficiency, and reduced operational overhead. However, securing these environments is extremely challenging. The core of current serverless security practices often revolves around two key components: log monitoring and static analysis of code or system configuration. But here is the issue with that: 1. Logs Only Tell Part of the Story Logs can track external-facing activities, but they don’t provide visibility into the internal execution of functions. For example, if an attacker injects malicious code into a serverless function that doesn’t interact with external resources (e.g., external APIs or databases), traditional log-based tools will not detect this intrusion. The attacker may execute unauthorized processes, manipulate files, or escalate privileges—all without triggering log events. 2. Static Misconfiguration Detection is Incomplete Static tools that check ...

Secure Vibe Coding: The Complete New Guide

Secure Vibe Coding: The Complete New Guide

Jun 19, 2025 Application Security / LLM Security
DALL-E for coders? That’s the promise behind vibe coding, a term describing the use of natural language to create software. While this ushers in a new era of AI-generated code, it introduces "silent killer" vulnerabilities: exploitable flaws that evade traditional security tools despite perfect test performance. A detailed analysis of secure vibe coding practices is available here . TL;DR: Secure Vibe Coding Vibe coding, using natural language to generate software with AI, is revolutionizing development in 2025. But while it accelerates prototyping and democratizes coding, it also introduces “silent killer” vulnerabilities: exploitable flaws that pass tests but evade traditional security tools. This article explores: Real-world examples of AI-generated code in production Shocking stats: 40% higher secret exposure in AI-assisted repos Why LLMs omit security unless explicitly prompted Secure prompting techniques and tool comparisons (GPT-4, Claude, Cursor, etc.) Reg...
AlienVault Unified Security Management: Real-Time Threat Detection Starting on Day 1

AlienVault Unified Security Management: Real-Time Threat Detection Starting on Day 1

Dec 21, 2015
As organizations expand their IT infrastructure to match their evolving business models and meet changing regulatory requirements, they often find that their networks have become extremely complex and challenging to manage. A primary concern for many IT teams is detecting threats in the mountain of event data being generated every day. Even a relatively small network can generate hundreds or thousands of events per second, with every system, application, and service generating events. The sheer volume of data makes it virtually impossible to identify manually and link those few events that indicate a successful network breach and system compromise, before the exfiltration of data. The AlienVault Unified Security Management (USM) platform is a solution to help IT teams with limited resources overcome the challenge of detecting threats in their network. USM platform accelerates and simplifies your ability to detect, prioritize, and respond to the most critical ...
How to Get Going with CTEM When You Don't Know Where to Start

How to Get Going with CTEM When You Don't Know Where to Start

Oct 04, 2024 Vulnerability Management / Security Posture
Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) is a strategic framework that helps organizations continuously assess and manage cyber risk. It breaks down the complex task of managing security threats into five distinct stages: Scoping, Discovery, Prioritization, Validation, and Mobilization. Each of these stages plays a crucial role in identifying, addressing, and mitigating vulnerabilities - before they can be exploited by attackers.  On paper, CTEM sounds great . But where the rubber meets the road – especially for CTEM neophytes - implementing CTEM can seem overwhelming. The process of putting CTEM principles into practice can look prohibitively complex at first. However, with the right tools and a clear understanding of each stage, CTEM can be an effective method for strengthening your organization’s security posture.  That’s why I've put together a step-by-step guide on which tools to use for which stage. Want to learn more? Read on… Stage 1: Scoping  When you're...

Product Walkthrough: How Mesh CSMA Reveals and Breaks Attack Paths to Crown Jewels

Mar 18, 2026 Cloud Security / Identity Security
Security teams today are not short on tools or data. They are overwhelmed by both.  Yet within the terabytes of alerts, exposures, and misconfigurations – security teams still struggle to understand context:  Q: Which exposures, misconfigurations, and vulnerabilities chain together to create viable attack paths to crown jewels? Even the most mature security teams can’t answer that easily. The problem isn't the tools. It's that the tools don’t talk to each other.  This is precisely the problem Gartner's Cybersecurity Mesh Architecture (CSMA) framework was designed to solve – and it's what Mesh Security has operationalized with the world's first purpose-built CSMA platform. In this article, we’ll walk through what CSMA is and how Mesh CSMA:  Discovers attack paths to crown jewels Prioritizes based on active threats  Eliminates attack paths systematically What Is CSMA, and Why Does It Matter Now? Before we dive into the platform, let’s clarify what C...
