Crashing Google Email App for Android Just By Sending a Malicious Email

Crashing Google Email App for Android Just By Sending a Malicious Email

Feb 18, 2015
A vulnerability has been discovered in the wildly popular Google's Stock Android Email App , that could be exploited by malicious attackers to remotely crash your smartphone application just by sending a specially crafted email. A Spain security researcher, Hector Marco , successfully exploited the vulnerability on his Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini running version 4.2.2.0200 of Stock Android Email App. He said the flaw appears to affect all older versions of Stock Android Email App, though devices running 4.2.2.0400 and newer versions are not affected. According to the researcher, when the victim receives the malicious email and tries to view it, the email app crashes. Further attempts to open the email again triggers a crash in the application before the victim can do anything. The flaw ( CVE-2015-1574 ) is due to incorrect handling of the Content-Disposition header . Hackers could exploit the vulnerability by sending an email with a malformed Content-Disposition header to th...
Corel Software DLL Hijacking Vulnerability Allows Hackers to Execute Malicious Code

Corel Software DLL Hijacking Vulnerability Allows Hackers to Execute Malicious Code

Jan 14, 2015
Security researchers have disclosed local zero day DLL hijacking vulnerabilities in several applications developed by Corel Software that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on victims' computer, potentially affecting more than 100 million users. The security holes were publicly disclosed by Marcos Accossatto from a vulnerability research firm Core Security after the vendor didn't respond to his private disclosure about the flaws. Corel develops wide range of products including graphics, photo, video and other media editing programs. According to the researcher, when a media file associated with one of the vulnerable Corel products is opened, the product also loads a specifically named DLL (Dynamic Link Library) file into memory if it's located in the same directory as the opened media file. These DLL files contain executable code which could allow an attacker to install malware on victims' computers by inserting malicious DLLs into the...
How AI Is Transforming IAM and Identity Security

How AI Is Transforming IAM and Identity Security

Nov 15, 2024Machine Learning / Identity Security
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun revolutionizing Identity Access Management (IAM), reshaping how cybersecurity is approached in this crucial field. Leveraging AI in IAM is about tapping into its analytical capabilities to monitor access patterns and identify anomalies that could signal a potential security breach. The focus has expanded beyond merely managing human identities — now, autonomous systems, APIs, and connected devices also fall within the realm of AI-driven IAM, creating a dynamic security ecosystem that adapts and evolves in response to sophisticated cyber threats. The Role of AI and Machine Learning in IAM AI and machine learning (ML) are creating a more robust, proactive IAM system that continuously learns from the environment to enhance security. Let's explore how AI impacts key IAM components: Intelligent Monitoring and Anomaly Detection AI enables continuous monitoring of both human and non-human identities , including APIs, service acc...

Hacker demonstrated 'Remote Code Execution' vulnerability on EBay website

Dec 13, 2013
A German Security researcher has demonstrated a critical  vulnerability on Ebay website, world's biggest eStore. According to David Vieira-Kurz  discovered Remote code execution flaw " due to a type-cast issue in combination with complex curly syntax ", that allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the EBay's web server. In a demo video, he exploited this RCE flaw on EBay website, and managed to display output of phpinfo()  PHP function on the web page, just by modifying the URL and injecting code in that. According to an explanation on his blog , he noticed a legitimate URL on EBay: https://sea.ebay.com/search/?q=david&catidd=1  . . and modified the URL to pass any array values including a payload: https://sea.ebay.com/search/?q[0]=david&q[1]=sec{${ phpinfo() }}&catidd=1 Video Demonstration: But it is not clear at this moment that where the flaw resides on Ebay server, because how a static GET parameter can be converted to accept li...

Rogue Android Gaming app that steals WhatsApp conversations

Rogue Android Gaming app that steals WhatsApp conversations

Dec 07, 2013
Google has recently removed a Rogue Android gaming app called " Balloon Pop 2 " from its official Play store that was actually stealing user's private Whatsapp app conversations. Every day numerous friends ask me if it is possible to steal WhatsApp chat messages and how, of course a malware represents an excellent solution to the request. In the past I already posted an article on the implementation of encryption mechanisms for WhatsApp application explaining that improper design could allow attackers to snoop on the conversation. Spreading the malware through an official channel the attacker could improve the efficiency of the attack, and it is exactly what is happening, an Android game has been published on the official Google Play store to stealthy steal users' WhatsApp conversation databases and to resell the collection of messages on an internet website. The games titled " Balloon Pop 2 " has been fortunately identified and removed from the official Google Play...

At Information Security Conference PacSec 2013 in Tokyo, during the HP's Pwn2Own contest, a zero-day exploit  showcased by " Pinkie Pie ", that took advantage of two vulnerabilities: An integer overflow that affects Chrome. Chrome vulnerability that resulted in a full sandbox escape. For successful exploitation, you have to get your victim to visit a malicious website e.g. clicking a link in an email, or an SMS or on another web page. He demonstrated this zero-day attack with remote code execution vulnerability on the affected devices. It is not known whether other Android phones are also vulnerable to same flaw or not. Vulnerability has been disclosed to Google by the Contest organizers and the company is working to address the issue as soon as possible. Researchers from...

Bitcoin Talk , the popular Bitcoin discussion forum, has been hacked and as it stands the site is currently unreachable. Bitcointalk has been down for nearly 6 hours. The forums have been allegedly hacked and Defaced by " The Hole Seekers " and selling 150,000 emails and hashed passwords stolen from Bitcointalk.org for 25 Bitcoins , where the passwords are hashed with sha256crypt. Hacker embedded the "1812 Overture" song in the background with a dazzling animated picture show. According to Bitcointalk admin Theymos, it's possible that the hackers gained access to the database. He says the website will not be restored until he figures out precisely what vulnerability the hackers leveraged. He's offering 50 Bitcoin to the first individual who can pinpoint the security hole. See the video below for the Hack-in-Action: " Hello friend, Bitcoin has been seized by the FBI for being illegal. Thanks, bye " reads one the message in the video. To be safe, i...

Vulnerability found in Apple's iOS can hide malicious code inside apps

Aug 01, 2013
A Georgia Tech researcher has found a weakness in Apple's iOS mobile platform that could let hackers to hide malicious code inside apps and can be surreptitiously planted on the Apple App Store. Researchers team created a proof-of-concept attack that was published in the Apple App Store and used to remotely launch attacks on a controlled batch of devices , enabling them to post unauthorized tweets, take photos and even go after other apps. " Our research shows that despite running inside the iOS sandbox, a Jekyll-based app can successfully perform many malicious tasks, such as posting tweets, taking photos, sending email and SMS, and even attacking other apps all without the user's knowledge. " Using a BeagleBoard, team created a USB malicious charger called Mactans  that can install apps without user knowledge within a minute of being plugged in. In one demonstration, the attacker was able to hide the iPhone Facebook application and install a malicious...

Rodpicom Botnet spreading via Skype and MSN Messenger

Feb 10, 2013
Malwares are getting updated during the age of social networking. FortiGuard Labs researchers have discovered a new malware called ' Rodpicom Botnet ' that spreads via messaging applications such as Skype and MSN Messenger. Dubbed W32/Rodpicom.A - Rodpicom Botnet sends a message to the victim with a link to a malicious site that leads to downloadable content. When the user clicks the link, the attack downloads another strain of malware, known as Dorkbot . Once the target machine is infected, it checks to see if the victim is using any messaging applications such as Skype or MSN Messenger.  It is revealed that, the malware employs new stealth tactics, including an exception handling technique that generates its own error to dodge analysis and relies on an anti-emulator that attacks the heuristic-scanning capabilities in antivirus software and enables its code to jump around several hundred times. The malware is enough smart to checks the language of the installed operating...
