A U.S. national has pleaded guilty in a Missouri court to operating a darknet carding site and selling financial information belonging to tens of thousands of victims in the country. Michael D. Mihalo , aka Dale Michael Mihalo Jr. and ggmccloud1, has been accused of setting up a carding site called Skynet Market that specialized in the trafficking of credit and debit card data. Mihalo and his associates also peddled their warez on other dark web marketplaces such as AlphaBay Market, Wall Street Market, and Hansa Market between February 22, 2016, and October 1, 2019. Joker's Stash, the largest dark web marketplace notorious for selling compromised payment card data, has announced plans to shut down its operations on February 15, 2021. In a message board post on a Russian-language underground cybercrime forum, the operator of the site — who goes by the name "JokerStash" — said "it's time for us to leave forever" and that "we will never ever open again," according to twin reports from cybersecurity firms  Gemini Advisory  and  Intel471 . A Dutch hacker was sentenced to 12 years in a US prison on Friday for trafficking over 100,000 credit card numbers stolen in a computer hacking conspiracy. David Benjamin Schrooten , 22,  known as "Fortezza" in the hacker world, pleaded guilty in November to criminal charges related to hacking, bank fraud, and identity theft, according to Western District of Washington US Attorney Jenny Durkan. At sentencing U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez asked him, " I don't think you would ever consider walking into someone's home, pulling out a gun and robbing them… Did it ever occur to you that you were doing that to all your victims? The city of Burlington is warning its employees to check their bank accounts after finding out funds have been stolen. The Skagit Valley Herald reports the money was electronically transferred to various personal and business accounts throughout the United States during a two-day period this week. " We really don't know exactly how it happened ," said City Manager Bryan Harrison. " Multiple banks in multiple states involved. " " Someone, either through the city system or Bank of America had actually accessed our electric authorization account. " The theft was first reported by the Skagit Valley Herald newspaper which said that Burlington's finance department reported the theft Thursday. Police and the Secret Service are investigating.
