TAG-140 Deploys DRAT V2 RAT, Targeting Indian Government, Defense, and Rail Sectors

TAG-140 Deploys DRAT V2 RAT, Targeting Indian Government, Defense, and Rail Sectors

7月 07, 2025 Cyber Espionage / Malware
A hacking group with ties other than Pakistan has been found targeting Indian government organizations with a modified variant of a remote access trojan (RAT) called DRAT. The activity has been attributed by Recorded Future's Insikt Group to a threat actor tracked as TAG-140, which it said overlaps with SideCopy , an adversarial collective assessed to be an operational sub-cluster within Transparent Tribe (aka APT-C-56, APT36, Datebug, Earth Karkaddan, Mythic Leopard, Operation C-Major, and ProjectM). "TAG-140 has consistently demonstrated iterative advancement and variety in its malware arsenal and delivery techniques," the Mastercard-owned company said in an analysis published last month. "This latest campaign, which spoofed the Indian Ministry of Defence via a cloned press release portal, marks a slight but notable shift in both malware architecture and command-and-control (C2) functionality." The updated version of DRAT, called DRAT V2, is the latest a...
India Proposes Digital Data Rules with Tough Penalties and Cybersecurity Requirements

India Proposes Digital Data Rules with Tough Penalties and Cybersecurity Requirements

1月 06, 2025 Regulatory Compliance / Data Privacy
The Indian government has published a draft version of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules for public consultation. "Data fiduciaries must provide clear and accessible information about how personal data is processed, enabling informed consent," India's Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a statement released Sunday. "Citizens are empowered with rights to demand data erasure, appoint digital nominees, and access user-friendly mechanisms to manage their data." The rules, which seek to operationalize the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, also give citizens greater control over their data, providing them with options for giving informed consent to processing their information, as well as the right to erase with digital platforms and address grievances. Companies operating in India are further required to implement security measures, such as encryption, access control, and data backups, to safeguard personal data, and ensure its c...

Hackers Planted Fake Digital Evidence on Devices of Indian Activists and Lawyers

2月 11, 2022
A previously unknown hacking group has been linked to targeted attacks against human rights activists, human rights defenders, academics, and lawyers across India in an attempt to plant "incriminating digital evidence." Cybersecurity firm SentinelOne attributed the intrusions to a group it tracks as " ModifiedElephant ," an elusive threat actor that's been operational since at least 2012, whose activity aligns sharply with Indian state interests. "ModifiedElephant operates through the use of commercially available remote access trojans (RATs) and has potential ties to the commercial surveillance industry," the researchers  said . "The threat actor uses spear-phishing with malicious documents to deliver malware, such as  NetWire ,  DarkComet , and simple keyloggers." The primary goal of ModifiedElephant is to facilitate long-term surveillance of targeted individuals, ultimately leading to the delivery of "evidence" on the victim...

WhatsApp Sues Indian Government Over New Internet Regulations

WhatsApp Sues Indian Government Over New Internet Regulations

5月 26, 2021
WhatsApp on Wednesday fired a legal salvo against the Indian government to block new regulations that would require messaging apps to trace the "first originator" of messages shared on the platform, thus effectively breaking encryption protections. "Requiring messaging apps to 'trace' chats is the equivalent of asking us to keep a fingerprint of every single message sent on WhatsApp, which would break end-to-end encryption and fundamentally undermines people's right to privacy," a WhatsApp spokesperson told The Hacker News via email. "We have consistently joined civil society and experts around the world in opposing requirements that would violate the privacy of our users." With over 530 million active users, India is WhatsApp's biggest market by users.  The lawsuit, filed by the Facebook-owned messaging service in the Delhi High Court, seeks to bar new internet rules that come into force effective May 26. Called the Intermediary Guide...
