Joint Advisory Warns of PRC-Backed Cyber Espionage Targeting Telecom Networks

Joint Advisory Warns of PRC-Backed Cyber Espionage Targeting Telecom Networks

Dec 04, 2024
A joint advisory issued by Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S. has warned of a broad cyber espionage campaign undertaken by People's Republic of China (PRC)-affiliated threat actors targeting telecommunications providers. "Identified exploitations or compromises associated with these threat actors' activity align with existing weaknesses associated with victim infrastructure; no novel activity has been observed," government agencies said . U.S. officials told Tuesday that the threat actors are still lurking inside U.S. telecommunications networks about six months after an investigation into the intrusions commenced. The attacks have been attributed to a nation-state group from China referred to as Salt Typhoon, which overlaps with activities tracked as Earth Estries, FamousSparrow, GhostEmperor, and UNC2286. The group is known to be active since at least 2020, with some of the artifacts developed as early as 2019. Last week, T-Mobile acknowledged that...

Chinese Hackers Use GHOSTSPIDER Malware to Hack Telecoms Across 12+ Countries

Nov 26, 2024 Cyber Espionage / Vulnerability
The China-linked threat actor known as Earth Estries has been observed using a previously undocumented backdoor called GHOSTSPIDER as part of its attacks targeting Southeast Asian telecommunications companies.  Trend Micro, which described the hacking group as an aggressive advanced persistent threat (APT), said the intrusions also involved the use of another cross-platform backdoor dubbed MASOL RAT (aka Backdr-NQ) on Linux systems belonging to Southeast Asian government networks. In all, Earth Estries is estimated to have successfully compromised more than 20 entities spanning telecommunications, technology, consulting, chemical, and transportation industries, government agencies, and non-profit organization (NGO) sectors. Victims have been identified across over a dozen countries, including Afghanistan, Brazil, Eswatini, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.S., and Vietnam. Earth Estries shares overlap with clusters t...
China-Linked TAG-112 Targets Tibetan Media with Cobalt Strike Espionage Campaign

China-Linked TAG-112 Targets Tibetan Media with Cobalt Strike Espionage Campaign

Nov 22, 2024 Cyber Espionage / Malware
A China-linked nation-state group called TAG-112 compromised Tibetan media and university websites in a new cyber espionage campaign designed to facilitate the delivery of the Cobalt Strike post-exploitation toolkit for follow-on information collection. "The attackers embedded malicious JavaScript in these sites, which spoofed a TLS certificate error to trick visitors into downloading a disguised security certificate," Recorded Future's Insikt Group said . "This malware, often used by threat actors for remote access and post-exploitation, highlights a continued cyber-espionage focus on Tibetan entities." The compromises have been pinned on a state-sponsored threat group called TAG-112, which has been described as a possible sub-group of another cluster tracked as Evasive Panda (aka Bronze Highland, Daggerfly, StormBamboo, and TAG-102) owing to tactical overlaps and their historical targeting of Tibetan entities. The two Tibetan community websites that wer...

China-Aligned MirrorFace Hackers Target EU Diplomats with World Expo 2025 Bait

China-Aligned MirrorFace Hackers Target EU Diplomats with World Expo 2025 Bait

Nov 07, 2024 Threat Intelligence / Cyber Espionage
The China-aligned threat actor known as MirrorFace has been observed targeting a diplomatic organization in the European Union, marking the first time the hacking crew has targeted an entity in the region. "During this attack, the threat actor used as a lure the upcoming World Expo, which will be held in 2025 in Osaka, Japan," ESET said in its APT Activity Report for the period April to September 2024. "This shows that even considering this new geographic targeting, MirrorFace remains focused on Japan and events related to it." MirrorFace, also tracked as Earth Kasha , is assessed to be part of an umbrella group known as APT10, which also comprises clusters tracked as Earth Tengshe and Bronze Starlight. It's known for its targeting of Japanese organizations at least since 2019, although a new campaign observed in early 2023 expanded its operations to include Taiwan and India. Over the years, the hacking crew's malware arsenal has evolved to include bac...
China-Linked CeranaKeeper Targeting Southeast Asia with Data Exfiltration

China-Linked CeranaKeeper Targeting Southeast Asia with Data Exfiltration

Oct 02, 2024 Cyber Espionage / Cloud Security
A previously undocumented threat actor called CeranaKeeper has been linked to a string of data exfiltration attacks targeting Southeast Asia. Slovak cybersecurity firm ESET, which observed campaigns targeting governmental institutions in Thailand starting in 2023, attributed the activity cluster as aligned to China, leveraging tools previously identified as used by the Mustang Panda actor. "The group constantly updates its backdoor to evade detection and diversifies its methods to aid massive data exfiltration," security researcher Romain Dumont said in an analysis published today. "CeranaKeeper abuses popular, legitimate cloud and file-sharing services such as Dropbox and OneDrive to implement custom backdoors and extraction tools." Some of the other countries targeted by the adversary include Myanmar, the Philippines, Japan, and Taiwan, all of which have been targeted by Chinese state-sponsored threat actors in recent years. ESET described CeranaKeeper a...
