Introduction The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack (2021) and SolarWinds supply chain attack (2020) were pivotal moments in cybersecurity, starting a new challenge for Chief Information Security Officers ( CISOs ). These attacks highlighted the importance of collaboration between CISOs and DevOps teams to ensure proper cloud security configurations. In this article, we will outline the 6-step approach to fostering strong partnerships between CISOs, DevOps teams, IT management, and organizations that can help to drive innovation while maintaining a robust security posture. You will learn how a CISO can effectively communicate with IT leadership and what methods to try. Our narrative will emphasize the most crucial aspect of an organization's security - growing your strong security team and moving to a proactive approach.  Understanding such breaches, such as the Capital One data breach (2019), Epsilon data breach (2019), Magecart compromises (ongoing), and MongoDB breaches (2...

SIEM for One, SIEM for All

SIEM for One, SIEM for All

Jul 08, 2014
IT security is not a luxury; it's a necessity. While IT practitioners understand this and are on the lookout for effective security options for their network, security solutions manufacturers tend to serve the enterprise market and large companies more than they do smaller organizations and resource-constrained security teams. The reality is that 99% of IT security departments are resource-constrained in terms of budget, time, and staff. This situation directly aligns with the Security Information & Event Management (SIEM) market. With the scores of costly, appliance-based and enterprise SIEM solutions on the market, the majority of security teams find it difficult to adopt SIEM to strengthen network security. Even if they do manage to meet the high cost of a SIEM purchase, they end up acquiring a SIEM which is too big for their security needs. This means incurring additional appliance maintenance costs, IT staff overhead costs to manage the SIEM product, and training an...

Nearly 18,000 SolarWinds Customers Installed Backdoored Software

Dec 15, 2020
SolarWinds, the enterprise monitoring software provider which found itself at the epicenter of the most  consequential supply chain attacks , said as many as 18,000 of its high-profile customers might have installed a tainted version of its Orion products. The acknowledgment comes as part of a new filing made by the company to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. The Texas-based company serves more than 300,000 customers worldwide, including every branch of the US military and four-fifths of the Fortune 500 companies. The "incident was likely the result of a highly sophisticated, targeted and manual supply chain attack by an outside nation state," SolarWinds said in the  regulatory disclosure , adding it "currently believes the actual number of customers that may have had an installation of the Orion products that contained this vulnerability to be fewer than 18,000." The company also reiterated in its  security advisory  that besides 2019.4 HF...
In the Wake of the SolarWinds Hack, Here's How Businesses Should Respond

In the Wake of the SolarWinds Hack, Here's How Businesses Should Respond

Jan 27, 2021
Throughout 2020, businesses, in general, have had their hands full with IT challenges. They had to rush to accommodate a sudden shift to remote work. Then they had to navigate a rapid adoption of automation technologies. And as the year came to a close, more businesses began trying to assemble the safety infrastructure required to return to some semblance of normal in 2021. But at the end of the year,  news of a massive breach  of IT monitoring software vendor SolarWinds introduced a new complication – the possibility of a wave of secondary data breaches and cyber-attacks. And because SolarWinds' products have a presence in so many business networks, the size of the threat is massive. So far, though, most of the attention is getting paid to large enterprises like Microsoft and Cisco (and the US Government), who were the primary target of the SolarWinds breach. What nobody's talking about is the rest of the 18,000 or so SolarWinds clients who may have been affected. For the...

Here's How SIEM Can Protect Your Privileged Accounts in the Enterprise

Here's How SIEM Can Protect Your Privileged Accounts in the Enterprise

Oct 20, 2015
It's inevitable. Most security threats eventually target privileged accounts. In every organization each user has different permissions, and some users hold the metaphorical keys to your IT kingdom. If the privileged accounts get compromised, it can lead to theft or sabotage. Because these accounts control delicate parts of your IT operations, and it is important to know who has privileges, what privileges they have, when they received access, and what activity they've done. This is where Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) software comes in handy. SIEM Monitors and Alerts on Privileged Account Activity Comprehensive monitoring of privileged accounts can be challenging because you need to monitor users who are administrators, users with root access, and users with access to firewalls, databases, services, automated processes, etc. With every additional user, group, and policy monitoring account activity gets increasingly difficult. On top of mo...
