Generative AI Security: Preventing Microsoft Copilot Data Exposure

Generative AI Security: Preventing Microsoft Copilot Data Exposure

Dec 05, 2023 Data Security / Generative AI
Microsoft Copilot has been called one of the most powerful productivity tools on the planet. Copilot is an AI assistant that lives inside each of your Microsoft 365 apps — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and so on. Microsoft's dream is to take the drudgery out of daily work and let humans focus on being creative problem-solvers. What makes Copilot a different beast than ChatGPT and other AI tools is that it has access to everything you've ever worked on in 365. Copilot can instantly search and compile data from across your documents, presentations, email, calendar, notes, and contacts. And therein lies the problem for information security teams. Copilot can access all the sensitive data that a user can access, which is often far too much. On average, 10% of a company's M365 data is open to all employees. Copilot can also rapidly generate  net new  sensitive data that must be protected. Prior to the AI revolution, humans' ability to create and share data ...
Axios Abuse and Salty 2FA Kits Fuel Advanced Microsoft 365 Phishing Attacks

Axios Abuse and Salty 2FA Kits Fuel Advanced Microsoft 365 Phishing Attacks

Sep 09, 2025 Phishing / Email Security
Threat actors are abusing HTTP client tools like Axios in conjunction with Microsoft's Direct Send feature to form a "highly efficient attack pipeline" in recent phishing campaigns, according to new findings from ReliaQuest. "Axios user agent activity surged 241% from June to August 2025, dwarfing the 85% growth of all other flagged user agents combined," the cybersecurity company said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "Out of 32 flagged user agents observed in this timeframe, Axios accounted for 24.44% of all activity." The abuse of Axios was previously flagged by Proofpoint in January 2025, detailing campaigns utilizing HTTP clients to send HTTP requests and receive HTTP responses from web servers to conduct account takeover (ATO) attacks on Microsoft 365 environments. ReliaQuest told The Hacker News that there is no evidence to suggest these activities are related, adding that the tool is regularly exploited alongside popular phishin...
Hackers Using PDFs to Impersonate Microsoft, DocuSign, and More in Callback Phishing Campaigns

Hackers Using PDFs to Impersonate Microsoft, DocuSign, and More in Callback Phishing Campaigns

Jul 02, 2025 Vulnerability / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to phishing campaigns that impersonate popular brands and trick targets into calling phone numbers operated by threat actors. "A significant portion of email threats with PDF payloads persuade victims to call adversary-controlled phone numbers, displaying another popular social engineering technique known as Telephone-Oriented Attack Delivery (TOAD), also known as callback phishing," Cisco Talos researcher Omid Mirzaei said in a report shared with The Hacker News. An analysis of phishing emails with PDF attachments between May 5 and June 5, 2025, has revealed Microsoft and Docusign to be the most impersonated brands. NortonLifeLock, PayPal, and Geek Squad are among the most impersonated brands in TOAD emails with PDF attachments. The activity is part of wider phishing attacks that attempt to leverage the trust people have with popular brands to initiate malicious actions. These messages typically incorporate PDF attachments...

⚡ Weekly Recap: Hot CVEs, npm Worm Returns, Firefox RCE, M365 Email Raid & More

Dec 01, 2025 Hacking News / Cybersecurity
Hackers aren't kicking down the door anymore. They just use the same tools we use every day — code packages, cloud accounts, email, chat, phones, and "trusted" partners — and turn them against us. One bad download can leak your keys. One weak vendor can expose many customers at once. One guest invite, one link on a phone, one bug in a common tool, and suddenly your mail, chats, repos, and servers are in play. Every story below is a reminder that your "safe" tools might be the real weak spot. ⚡ Threat of the Week Shai-Hulud Returns with More Aggression — The npm registry was targeted a second time by a self-replicating worm that went by the moniker "Sha1-Hulud: The Second Coming," affecting over 800 packages and 27,000 GitHub repositories. Like in the previous iteration, the main objective was to steal sensitive data like API keys, cloud credentials, and npm and GitHub authentication information, and facilitate deeper supply chain compromise in a worm-like fashion. Th...
