Anthropic Says Seven China-Based AI Labs Ran Industrial-Scale Claude Distillation Attacks

Anthropic Says Seven China-Based AI Labs Ran Industrial-Scale Claude Distillation Attacks

Sep 11, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cybercrime
Anthropic on Thursday said it identified and disrupted industrial-scale illicit distillation attacks against Claude from seven labs based in China, including Alibaba, Moonshot, DeepSeek, Z.ai (aka Zhipu), and MiniMax. Knowledge distillation by itself is a legitimate training method . It refers to a machine learning technique where a large, powerful AI model assumes the role of a "teacher" to train a smaller, less-capable or faster "student" model to copy its capabilities. Illicit distillation, on the other hand, is an industrial-scale campaign that covertly extracts a model's capabilities and replicates them in another model without authorization, typically by making use of networks of fake accounts created with stolen credit cards, login credentials, and API keys. Frontier AI labs in the West, including Google and OpenAI , have repeatedly called out distillation attacks aimed at their models. Anthropic said it has observed unauthorized labs employing ...

U.S. Agencies Accuse China AI Firms of Distilling Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok

Sep 09, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Security
U.S. cybersecurity and intelligence agencies have accused China-based artificial intelligence (AI) companies of conducting "systematic extraction" of proprietary functionalities and capabilities of American frontier models through distillation attacks. The activity has been described as occurring at an industrial-scale and one that forms the "core" of their AI development strategy, according to a bulletin released by the National Security Agency (NSA), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). "While 'distillation' is recognized as a legitimate and useful technique in AI research, China-based AI companies are engaging in aggressive, malicious, and targeted distillation activities at an industrial scale that extract restricted proprietary functionalities and capabilities of U.S. frontier AI models," the authoring agencies said . The joint advisory noted that Chinese AI firms l...

When the Whole Company Adopts AI: What It Does to Your SOC

When the Whole Company Adopts AI: What It Does to Your SOC

Sep 12, 2026 AI Agent / Security Operations
Over the past year, we watched a new class of alert appear in enterprise security operations centers and grow faster than anything else in the stream: alerts that were triggered by AI tools and agents. Not attacks against AI, but the ordinary, everyday footprint of an organization using it, from developers running coding agents and non-technical staff signing consumer AI tools into corporate accounts. We reviewed AI-related activity across numerous enterprise environments. Two numbers frame everything that follows. AI-related alerts still account for only 0.43% of all SOC alerts. And that share is climbing every single month, up 685% between February and June 2026. AI is a small slice of the alert stream today and the fastest-growing slice at the same time. What makes those alerts worth a security team’s attention is not their volume but their composition. We sort everything an AI agent triggers in a SOC into three buckets: real attacks, risks, and noise, with the split being 94....
Anthropic Disrupts AI-Powered Cyberattacks Automating Theft and Extortion Across Critical Sectors

Anthropic Disrupts AI-Powered Cyberattacks Automating Theft and Extortion Across Critical Sectors

Aug 27, 2025 Cyber Attack / Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic on Wednesday revealed that it disrupted a sophisticated operation that weaponized its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot Claude to conduct large-scale theft and extortion of personal data in July 2025. "The actor targeted at least 17 distinct organizations, including in healthcare, the emergency services, and government, and religious institutions," the company said . "Rather than encrypt the stolen information with traditional ransomware, the actor threatened to expose the data publicly in order to attempt to extort victims into paying ransoms that sometimes exceeded $500,000." "The actor employed Claude Code on Kali Linux as a comprehensive attack platform, embedding operational instructions in a CLAUDE.md file that provided persistent context for every interaction." The unknown threat actor is said to have used AI to an "unprecedented degree," using Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic coding tool, to automate variou...
ChatGPhish Vulnerability Turns ChatGPT Web Summaries Into a Phishing Surface

ChatGPhish Vulnerability Turns ChatGPT Web Summaries Into a Phishing Surface

May 29, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Vulnerability Research
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a vulnerability in OpenAI ChatGPT that leverages the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant's implicit trust in Markdown links and images to trigger prompt injections and open the door to phishing attacks. The technique has been codenamed ChatGPhish by Permiso Security. "The chatgpt.com response renderer trusts Markdown links and Markdown image URLs that originated from a third-party page the assistant has just summarized. It auto-fetches those images and surfaces those links as live, clickable elements inside the trusted assistant UI," security researcher Andi Ahmeti said in a report shared with The Hacker News. In a hypothetical attack scenario, a bad actor can append a small payload to any web page that the victim later prompts ChatGPT to summarize, causing it to leak their IP, User-Agent, and Referer details when attacker-hosted images embedded in the page are automatically fetched when the answer is rendered...
Anthropic Says Chinese AI Firms Used 16 Million Claude Queries to Copy Model

Anthropic Says Chinese AI Firms Used 16 Million Claude Queries to Copy Model

Feb 24, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Anthropic
Anthropic on Monday said it identified "industrial-scale campaigns" mounted by three artificial intelligence (AI) companies, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax, to illegally extract Claude's capabilities to improve their own models. The distillation attacks generated over 16 million exchanges with its large language model (LLM) through about 24,000 fraudulent accounts in violation of its terms of service and regional access restrictions. All three companies are based in China, where the use of its services is prohibited  is prohibited due to "legal, regulatory, and security risks." Distillation refers to a technique where a less capable model is trained on the outputs generated by a stronger AI system. While distillation is a legitimate way for companies to produce smaller, cheaper versions of their own frontier models, it's illegal for competitors to leverage it to acquire such capabilities from other AI companies at a fraction of the time and cost tha...
AI Coding Agents Found Triggering Endpoint Security Rules Built to Catch Attackers

AI Coding Agents Found Triggering Endpoint Security Rules Built to Catch Attackers

Jul 08, 2026 AI Security / Threat Detection
Sophos looked at a week of its own endpoint data and found that AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenAI Codex are setting off detection rules written to catch human intruders. The agents are not malicious. They just do a lot of things that, to a behavioral engine, look exactly like an attack. Decrypting browser credentials, listing what sits in Windows' credential store, pulling files down with built-in system tools, writing to the startup folder: these have long been high-signal to defenders. What has changed is who is generating it. On the machines Sophos watched, it was often a developer's AI assistant going about ordinary work. What set the alarms off The  analysis  draws on seven days of telemetry from June 2026, taken from Sophos's behavioral engine on Windows and counted by unique machines, not raw event volume. It is a narrow window on one vendor's fleet, not an industry census. Sophos's charts put credential access at 56.2 perc...
Malicious JetBrains Plugins Steal AI API Keys as Chrome Extensions Capture Chatbot Chats

Malicious JetBrains Plugins Steal AI API Keys as Chrome Extensions Capture Chatbot Chats

Jun 17, 2026 Supply Chain Security / AI Security
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a "coordinated malware campaign" on the JetBrains Marketplace that has published no less than 15 malicious plugins capable of exfiltrating artificial intelligence (AI) provider keys. "Every plugin poses as an AI coding assistant built on DeepSeek and other large language models, offering chat, commit messages, code review, bug finding, and unit tests," Aikido Security researcher Ilyas Makari said . "They function exactly as advertised. However, the AI provider API key you enter gets exfiltrated to a server controlled by the attacker." The activity is said to have been ongoing since the end of October 2025, with new plugins released as recently as June 10, 2026. Two of the plugins, CodeGPT AI Assistant and DeepSeek AI Assist, have more than 25,000 downloads each, although it's not clear if the counts are authentic or if they have been inflated to fake their popularity. The complete list of plugins is below -...
The Outsized Shadow: Why 5% of AI Users Are Your Biggest Security Risk

The Outsized Shadow: Why 5% of AI Users Are Your Biggest Security Risk

Aug 24, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Browser Security
Big security risks come in small packages. While enterprise security teams focus on policing the proliferation of employees using ChatGPT and Claude for quick drafting tasks, a more urgent threat is posed by a handful of AI super-adopters who are quietly hardcoding unvetted tools into critical business operations. According to new research published by Akamai, the top 5% of enterprise power users interact with AI models at 12 times the rate of the bottom 50% of the workforce. The findings, published in Akamai’s State of the Internet: Enterprise AI Usage Risk Report 2026 , are based on real-world usage and telemetry data as well as research and threat analysis.  These AI super-adopters are creating a disproportionate security risk by expanding the use of shadow AI, increasing opportunities for data leakage, and introducing autonomous AI agents that operate within the enterprise but outside its established guardrails. “Small groups of AI power users are casting outsized shado...

New AI Usage Report: Enterprise AI Risk Is Heavily Concentrated Among a Small Group of AI "Power users"

May 28, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Enterprise Security
State of AI Usage Report 2026 ( full report here ) by LayerX Security reveals the extent of the enterprise AI visibility gap and why most organizations still don't understand where their AI exposure is actually coming from. The research shows that enterprise AI risk is not distributed evenly across users or platforms. Instead, it is heavily concentrated among a small group of AI power users and a handful of dominant AI platforms that drive the majority of enterprise AI activity and sensitive data exposure. At the same time, AI usage is rapidly fragmenting across personal accounts, AI browser extensions, embedded copilots, AI connectors, and secondary AI tools operating outside traditional visibility and governance controls. The result is a fragmented AI ecosystem that most organizations still cannot fully see or govern. While AI Is Everywhere in the Enterprise, Most Employees Are Casual The common perception is that "everyone uses AI now". The report paints a much ...
Agentjacking Attack Tricks AI Coding Agents Into Running Malicious Code

Agentjacking Attack Tricks AI Coding Agents Into Running Malicious Code

Jun 12, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have described what they say is a new class of attack that can trick artificial intelligence (AI) coding agents into running arbitrary code on developer machines. Called Agentjacking by Tenet Security, the attack can be triggered by means of a fake error report crafted using Sentry, an open-source error-tracking and performance-monitoring platform. "The attack exploits a critical architectural flaw at the intersection of Sentry's event ingestion (which accepts arbitrary payloads from anyone with the DSN) and the Sentry MCP server (which returns this data to AI agents as trusted system output)," security researchers Ron Bobrov, Barak Sternberg, and Nevo Poran said . The idea is to inject crafted input into Sentry error events, which are then interpreted by coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor as legitimate diagnostic resolution steps and run attacker-controlled code. A successful attack of this kind can expose sensitive data, includ...
How Ceros Gives Security Teams Visibility and Control in Claude Code

How Ceros Gives Security Teams Visibility and Control in Claude Code

Mar 19, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Enterprise Security
Security teams have spent years building identity and access controls for human users and service accounts. But a new category of actor has quietly entered most enterprise environments, and it operates entirely outside those controls. Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding agent, is now running across engineering organizations at scale. It reads files, executes shell commands, calls external APIs, and connects to third-party integrations called MCP servers. It does all of this autonomously, with the full permissions of the developer who launched it, on the developer's local machine, before any network-layer security tool can see it. It leaves no audit trail that the existing security infrastructure was built to capture. This walkthrough covers Ceros, an AI Trust Layer built by Beyond Identity that sits directly on the developer's machine alongside Claude Code and provides real-time visibility, runtime policy enforcement, and a cryptographic audit trail of every action the a...
Chinese Hackers Use Anthropic's AI to Launch Automated Cyber Espionage Campaign

Chinese Hackers Use Anthropic's AI to Launch Automated Cyber Espionage Campaign

Nov 14, 2025 Cyber Espionage / AI Security
State-sponsored threat actors from China used artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by Anthropic to orchestrate automated cyber attacks as part of a "highly sophisticated espionage campaign" in mid-September 2025. "The attackers used AI's 'agentic' capabilities to an unprecedented degree – using AI not just as an advisor, but to execute the cyber attacks themselves," the AI upstart said . The activity is assessed to have manipulated Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding tool, to attempt to break into about 30 global targets spanning large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing companies, and government agencies. A subset of these intrusions succeeded. Anthropic has since banned the relevant accounts and enforced defensive mechanisms to flag such attacks. The campaign, GTG-1002, marks the first time a threat actor has leveraged AI to conduct a "large-scale cyber attack" without major human intervention an...
Claude Code GitHub Action Flaw Let One Malicious Issue Hijack Repositories

Claude Code GitHub Action Flaw Let One Malicious Issue Hijack Repositories

Jun 04, 2026 Vulnerability / AI Security
A security researcher found a flaw in Anthropic's Claude Code GitHub Action that let an attacker take over vulnerable public repositories running it, with nothing more than a single opened GitHub issue. Because Anthropic's own action repo used the same workflow, a working attack could have pushed malicious code into the action itself and onto the projects downstream that pull it. RyotaK of GMO Flatt Security reported the core bypass to Anthropic in January, and Anthropic fixed it within four days , with further hardening through the spring; the fixes are in claude-code-action v1.0.94. Anthropic rated the issues 7.8 under CVSS v4.0 and paid a bug bounty. Claude Code GitHub Actions drops Claude into CI/CD pipelines to triage issues, slap on labels, review pull requests, or run slash commands. By default, the workflow gets read and write access to a repo's code, issues, pull requests, discussions, and workflow files. Because those permissions are broad, the action is su...

Autonomous AI Agents Compromise Thousands of Credentials in Under Six Hours

Sep 08, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cybercrime
Threat actors are continuing to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline their operations , with one financially motivated hacking group employing an autonomous, multi-agent attack framework to carry out a large-scale credential harvesting campaign within six hours. Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) said it has observed attackers with diverse motivations targeting proprietary AI models across healthcare, government, and media sectors, exfiltrating API credentials, and co-opting victim cloud environments to sustain unauthorized AI workloads. This highlights growing attacker focus on enterprise AI assets for espionage, extortion, and resource theft. "At this point, we can assume that all threat actors are using AI in some capacity and their operations have benefited," John Hultquist, chief analyst at GTIG, said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "Like everyone else, we're concerned about the vulnerability problem, but AI is being applie...

Claude Code Source Leaked via npm Packaging Error, Anthropic Confirms

Apr 01, 2026 Data Breach / Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic on Tuesday confirmed that internal code for its popular artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant, Claude Code, had been inadvertently released due to a human error. "No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed," an Anthropic spokesperson said in a statement shared with CNBC News. "This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again." The discovery came after the AI upstart released version 2.1.88 of the Claude Code npm package, with users spotting that it contained a source map file that could be used to access Claude Code's source code – comprising nearly 2,000 TypeScript files and more than 512,000 lines of code. The version is no longer available for download from npm. Security researcher Chaofan Shou was the first to publicly flag it on X, stating "Claude code source code has been leaked via a map file in their npm re...
Google Patches Antigravity IDE Flaw Enabling Prompt Injection Code Execution

Google Patches Antigravity IDE Flaw Enabling Prompt Injection Code Execution

Apr 21, 2026 Vulnerability / Artificial Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a vulnerability in Google's agentic integrated development environment (IDE), Antigravity, that could be exploited to achieve code execution. The flaw, since patched, combines Antigravity's permitted file-creation capabilities with an insufficient input sanitization in Antigravity's native file-searching tool, find_by_name, to bypass the program's Strict Mode , a restrictive security configuration that limits network access, prevents out-of-workspace writes, and ensures all commands are being run within a sandbox context . "By injecting the -X (exec-batch) flag through the Pattern parameter [in the find_by_name tool], an attacker can force fd to execute arbitrary binaries against workspace files," Pillar Security researcher Dan Lisichkin said in an analysis. "Combined with Antigravity's ability to create files as a permitted action, this enables a full attack chain: stage a malicious script, then trigger ...
Cursor AI Code Editor Flaw Enables Silent Code Execution via Malicious Repositories

Cursor AI Code Editor Flaw Enables Silent Code Execution via Malicious Repositories

Sep 12, 2025 AI Security / Vulnerability
A security weakness has been disclosed in the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered code editor Cursor that could trigger code execution when a maliciously crafted repository is opened using the program. The issue stems from the fact that an out-of-the-box security setting is disabled by default, opening the door for attackers to run arbitrary code on users' computers with their privileges. "Cursor ships with Workspace Trust disabled by default, so VS Code-style tasks configured with runOptions.runOn: 'folderOpen' auto-execute the moment a developer browses a project," Oasis Security said in an analysis. "A malicious .vscode/tasks.json turns a casual 'open folder' into silent code execution in the user's context." Cursor is an AI-powered fork of Visual Studio Code, which supports a feature called Workspace Trust to allow developers to safely browse and edit code regardless of where it came from or who wrote it. With this option disab...
