Axios Supply Chain Attack Pushes Cross-Platform RAT via Compromised npm Account

Axios Supply Chain Attack Pushes Cross-Platform RAT via Compromised npm Account

Mar 31, 2026 Open Source / Supply Chain Attack
The popular HTTP client known as Axios has suffered a supply chain attack after two newly published versions of the npm package introduced a malicious dependency that delivers a trojan capable of targeting Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. Versions 1.14.1 and 0.30.4 of Axios have been found to inject " plain-crypto-js " version 4.2.1 as a fake dependency. According to StepSecurity, the two versions were published using the compromised npm credentials of the primary Axios maintainer ("jasonsaayman"), allowing the attackers to bypass the project's GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline. "Its sole purpose is to execute a postinstall script that acts as a cross-platform remote access trojan (RAT) dropper, targeting macOS, Windows, and Linux," security researcher Ashish Kurmi said . "The dropper contacts a live command and control server and delivers platform-specific second-stage payloads. After execution, the malware deletes itself and replaces its own...

CountLoader Broadens Russian Ransomware Operations With Multi-Version Malware Loader

Sep 18, 2025 Malware / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new malware loader codenamed CountLoader that has been put to use by Russian ransomware gangs to deliver post-exploitation tools like Cobalt Strike and AdaptixC2 , and a remote access trojan known as PureHVNC RAT. "CountLoader is being used either as part of an Initial Access Broker's (IAB) toolset or by a ransomware affiliate with ties to the LockBit, Black Basta, and Qilin ransomware groups," Silent Push said in an analysis. Appearing in three different versions – .NET, PowerShell, and JavaScript – the emerging threat has been observed in a campaign targeting individuals in Ukraine using PDF-based phishing lures and impersonating the National Police of Ukraine. Silent Push told The Hacker News that it does not have any insight into the nature of malware that was dropped using CountLoader. It's worth noting that the PowerShell version of the malware was previously flagged by Kaspersky as being distributed using DeepSe...

Cleo File Transfer Vulnerability Under Exploitation – Patch Pending, Mitigation Urged

Dec 10, 2024 Vulnerability / Threat Analysis
Users of Cleo-managed file transfer software are being urged to ensure that their instances are not exposed to the internet following reports of mass exploitation of a vulnerability affecting fully patched systems. Cybersecurity company Huntress said it discovered evidence of threat actors exploiting the issue en masse on December 3, 2024. The vulnerability, which impacts Cleo's LexiCom, VLTransfer, and Harmony software, concerns a case of unauthenticated remote code execution. The security hole is tracked as CVE-2024-50623 (CVSS score: 9.8), with Cleo noting that the flaw is the result of an unrestricted file upload that could pave the way for the execution of arbitrary code. The Illinois-based company, which has over 4,200 customers across the world, has since issued another advisory (CVE-2024-55956), warning of a separate "unauthenticated malicious hosts vulnerability that could lead to remote code execution." The development comes after Huntress said the pat...

WhatsApp Malware 'Maverick' Hijacks Browser Sessions to Target Brazil's Biggest Banks

WhatsApp Malware 'Maverick' Hijacks Browser Sessions to Target Brazil's Biggest Banks

Nov 11, 2025 Malware / Botnet
Threat hunters have uncovered similarities between a banking malware called Coyote and a newly disclosed malicious program dubbed Maverick that has been propagated via WhatsApp. According to a report from CyberProof, both malware strains are written in .NET, target Brazilian users and banks, and feature identical functionality to decrypt, targeting banking URLs and monitor banking applications. More importantly, both include the ability to spread through WhatsApp Web . Maverick was first documented by Trend Micro early last month, attributing it to a threat actor dubbed Water Saci . The campaign involves two components: A self-propagating malware referred to as SORVEPOTEL that's spread via the desktop web version of WhatsApp and is used to deliver a ZIP archive containing the Maverick payload. The malware is designed to monitor active browser window tabs for URLs that match a hard-coded list of financial institutions in Latin America. Should the URLs match, it establishes con...
New COLDRIVER Malware Campaign Joins BO Team and Bearlyfy in Russia-Focused Cyberattacks

New COLDRIVER Malware Campaign Joins BO Team and Bearlyfy in Russia-Focused Cyberattacks

Sep 26, 2025 Malware / Data Breach
The Russian advanced persistent threat (APT) group known as COLDRIVER has been attributed to a fresh round of ClickFix-style attacks designed to deliver two new "lightweight" malware families tracked as BAITSWITCH and SIMPLEFIX. Zscaler ThreatLabz, which detected the new multi-stage ClickFix campaign earlier this month, described BAITSWITCH as a downloader that ultimately drops SIMPLEFIX, a PowerShell backdoor. COLDRIVER , also tracked as Callisto, Star Blizzard, and UNC4057, is the moniker assigned to a Russia-linked threat actor that's known to target a wide range of sectors since 2019. While early campaign waves were observed using spear-phishing lures to direct targets to credential harvesting pages, the group has been fleshing out its arsenal with custom tools like SPICA and LOSTKEYS , which underscores its technical sophistication. The adversary's use of ClickFix tactics was previously documented by the Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) back in May 2...
Discord Invite Link Hijacking Delivers AsyncRAT and Skuld Stealer Targeting Crypto Wallets

Discord Invite Link Hijacking Delivers AsyncRAT and Skuld Stealer Targeting Crypto Wallets

Jun 14, 2025 Malware / Threat Intelligence
A new malware campaign is exploiting a weakness in Discord's invitation system to deliver an information stealer called Skuld and the AsyncRAT remote access trojan. "Attackers hijacked the links through vanity link registration, allowing them to silently redirect users from trusted sources to malicious servers," Check Point said in a technical report. "The attackers combined the ClickFix phishing technique, multi-stage loaders, and time-based evasions to stealthily deliver AsyncRAT, and a customized Skuld Stealer targeting crypto wallets." The issue with Discord's invite mechanism is that it allows attackers to hijack expired or deleted invite links and secretly redirect unsuspecting users to malicious servers under their control. This also means that a Discord invite link that was once trusted and shared on forums or social media platforms could unwittingly lead users to malicious sites. Details of the campaign come a little over a month after the ...

XWorm 6.0 Returns with 35+ Plugins and Enhanced Data Theft Capabilities

Oct 07, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Windows Security
Cybersecurity researchers have charted the evolution of XWorm malware, turning it into a versatile tool for supporting a wide range of malicious actions on compromised hosts. "XWorm's modular design is built around a core client and an array of specialized components known as plugins," Trellix researchers Niranjan Hegde and Sijo Jacob said in an analysis published last week. "These plugins are essentially additional payloads designed to carry out specific harmful actions once the core malware is active." XWorm, first observed in 2022 and linked to a threat actor named EvilCoder, is a Swiss Army knife of malware that can facilitate data theft, keylogging, screen capture, persistence, and even ransomware operations. It's primarily propagated via phishing emails and bogus sites advertising malicious ScreenConnect installers. Some of the other tools advertised by the developer include a .NET-based malware builder, a remote access trojan called XBinder, a...

Hackers Leverage Microsoft Teams to Spread Matanbuchus 3.0 Malware to Targeted Firms

Jul 16, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a new variant of a known malware loader called Matanbuchus that packs in significant features to enhance its stealth and evade detection. Matanbuchus is the name given to a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) offering that can act as a conduit for next-stage payloads , including Cobalt Strike beacons and ransomware. First advertised in February 2021 on Russian-speaking cybercrime forums for a rental price of $2,500, the malware has been put to use as part of ClickFix-like lures to trick users visiting legitimate-but-compromised sites not running it. Matanbuchus's delivery methods have evolved over time, leveraging phishing emails pointing to booby-trapped Google Drive links, drive-by downloads from compromised sites, malicious MSI installers , and malvertising . It has been used to deploy a variety of secondary payloads including DanaBot, QakBot, and Cobalt Strike, all known precursors to ransomware deployment.

New FileFix Method Emerges as a Threat Following 517% Rise in ClickFix Attacks

Jun 26, 2025 Cyber Attack / Malware Analysis
The ClickFix social engineering tactic as an initial access vector using fake CAPTCHA verifications increased by 517% between the second half of 2024 and the first half of this year, according to data from ESET. "The list of threats that ClickFix attacks lead to is growing by the day, including infostealers, ransomware, remote access trojans, cryptominers, post-exploitation tools, and even custom malware from nation-state-aligned threat actors," Jiří Kropáč, Director of Threat Prevention Labs at ESET, said . ClickFix has become a widely popular and deceptive method that employs bogus error messages or CAPTCHA verification checks to entice victims into copying and pasting a malicious script into either the Windows Run dialog or the Apple macOS Terminal app, and running it. The Slovak cybersecurity company said the highest volume of ClickFix detections are concentrated around Japan, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Slovakia. The prevalence and effectiveness of this attack meth...
