Anthropic Says Seven China-Based AI Labs Ran Industrial-Scale Claude Distillation Attacks

Anthropic Says Seven China-Based AI Labs Ran Industrial-Scale Claude Distillation Attacks

Sep 11, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cybercrime
Anthropic on Thursday said it identified and disrupted industrial-scale illicit distillation attacks against Claude from seven labs based in China, including Alibaba, Moonshot, DeepSeek, Z.ai (aka Zhipu), and MiniMax. Knowledge distillation by itself is a legitimate training method . It refers to a machine learning technique where a large, powerful AI model assumes the role of a "teacher" to train a smaller, less-capable or faster "student" model to copy its capabilities. Illicit distillation, on the other hand, is an industrial-scale campaign that covertly extracts a model's capabilities and replicates them in another model without authorization, typically by making use of networks of fake accounts created with stolen credit cards, login credentials, and API keys. Frontier AI labs in the West, including Google and OpenAI , have repeatedly called out distillation attacks aimed at their models. Anthropic said it has observed unauthorized labs employing ...
Chinese Hackers Use Anthropic's AI to Launch Automated Cyber Espionage Campaign

Chinese Hackers Use Anthropic's AI to Launch Automated Cyber Espionage Campaign

Nov 14, 2025 Cyber Espionage / AI Security
State-sponsored threat actors from China used artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by Anthropic to orchestrate automated cyber attacks as part of a "highly sophisticated espionage campaign" in mid-September 2025. "The attackers used AI's 'agentic' capabilities to an unprecedented degree – using AI not just as an advisor, but to execute the cyber attacks themselves," the AI upstart said . The activity is assessed to have manipulated Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding tool, to attempt to break into about 30 global targets spanning large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing companies, and government agencies. A subset of these intrusions succeeded. Anthropic has since banned the relevant accounts and enforced defensive mechanisms to flag such attacks. The campaign, GTG-1002, marks the first time a threat actor has leveraged AI to conduct a "large-scale cyber attack" without major human intervention an...

Claude Used to Automate Exploitation and Data Theft Across Multiple Victims

Sep 11, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cyber Operations
Anthropic has warned that cybercriminals and state-sponsored hackers alike are using its Claude models for cyber attacks, weapons design, propaganda, and mass surveillance between December 2025 and August 2026. The threat actors, which the artificial intelligence (AI) company has branded Generative Threat Groups (GTGs), span state-sponsored groups, financially motivated criminals, commercial spyware vendors, state propaganda institutions, and politically motivated individuals. "The cybersecurity skills of AI models means that AI has collapsed the labor and tooling gap that used to separate well-resourced, state-sponsored operations from individual operators," Anthropic said . "The use of AI went beyond simple questions and responses from a chatbot but rather involved the use of multi-agent frameworks executing reconnaissance, exploitation, and data exfiltration." Among the notable cases highlighted by Anthropic is the development of an AI-assisted workflow by...

Pentagon Designates Anthropic Supply Chain Risk Over AI Military Dispute

Pentagon Designates Anthropic Supply Chain Risk Over AI Military Dispute

Feb 28, 2026 National Security / Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic on Friday hit back after U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth directed the Pentagon to designate the artificial intelligence (AI) upstart as a "supply chain risk." "This action follows months of negotiations that reached an impasse over two exceptions we requested to the lawful use of our AI model, Claude: the mass domestic surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons," the company said . "No amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons." In a social media post on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was ordering all federal agencies to phase out the use of Anthropic technology within the next six months. A subsequent X post from Hegseth mandated that all contractors, suppliers, and partners doing business with the U.S. military cease any "commercial activity with Anthropic" effective immediately. "I...
Researchers Say Claude for Chrome Flaw Lets Rogue Extensions Trigger Gmail Reads

Researchers Say Claude for Chrome Flaw Lets Rogue Extensions Trigger Gmail Reads

Jul 14, 2026 Browser Security / Vulnerability
Any other browser extension that can run a script on claude.ai can still trigger Claude for Chrome tasks aimed at your Gmail, your latest Google Doc and its comments, and your Calendar. Both this and ClaudeBleed need a rogue extension that can already run a script on claude.ai; the difference is scope. Anthropic restricted the arbitrary-prompt path in May as part of its response to the  ClaudeBleed  flaw, boxing external callers into a fixed set of tasks, but  Manifold Security  says the gap is still open in v1.0.80, the current release, eight versions later. If you run Claude for Chrome and any other extension that can touch claude.ai, you are in scope. In the default "ask before acting" mode, the forged task still hits an approval box you have to click. If you switched on "Act without asking," the hands-off automation mode, it runs with no prompt at all. The quickest guard is to turn "Act without asking" off and review any extension with permissio...
Anthropic Disrupts AI-Powered Cyberattacks Automating Theft and Extortion Across Critical Sectors

Anthropic Disrupts AI-Powered Cyberattacks Automating Theft and Extortion Across Critical Sectors

Aug 27, 2025 Cyber Attack / Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic on Wednesday revealed that it disrupted a sophisticated operation that weaponized its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot Claude to conduct large-scale theft and extortion of personal data in July 2025. "The actor targeted at least 17 distinct organizations, including in healthcare, the emergency services, and government, and religious institutions," the company said . "Rather than encrypt the stolen information with traditional ransomware, the actor threatened to expose the data publicly in order to attempt to extort victims into paying ransoms that sometimes exceeded $500,000." "The actor employed Claude Code on Kali Linux as a comprehensive attack platform, embedding operational instructions in a CLAUDE.md file that provided persistent context for every interaction." The unknown threat actor is said to have used AI to an "unprecedented degree," using Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic coding tool, to automate variou...
Claude Code GitHub Action Flaw Let One Malicious Issue Hijack Repositories

Claude Code GitHub Action Flaw Let One Malicious Issue Hijack Repositories

Jun 04, 2026 Vulnerability / AI Security
A security researcher found a flaw in Anthropic's Claude Code GitHub Action that let an attacker take over vulnerable public repositories running it, with nothing more than a single opened GitHub issue. Because Anthropic's own action repo used the same workflow, a working attack could have pushed malicious code into the action itself and onto the projects downstream that pull it. RyotaK of GMO Flatt Security reported the core bypass to Anthropic in January, and Anthropic fixed it within four days , with further hardening through the spring; the fixes are in claude-code-action v1.0.94. Anthropic rated the issues 7.8 under CVSS v4.0 and paid a bug bounty. Claude Code GitHub Actions drops Claude into CI/CD pipelines to triage issues, slap on labels, review pull requests, or run slash commands. By default, the workflow gets read and write access to a repo's code, issues, pull requests, discussions, and workflow files. Because those permissions are broad, the action is su...
U.S. Agencies Accuse China AI Firms of Distilling Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok

U.S. Agencies Accuse China AI Firms of Distilling Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok

Sep 09, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Security
U.S. cybersecurity and intelligence agencies have accused China-based artificial intelligence (AI) companies of conducting "systematic extraction" of proprietary functionalities and capabilities of American frontier models through distillation attacks. The activity has been described as occurring at an industrial-scale and one that forms the "core" of their AI development strategy, according to a bulletin released by the National Security Agency (NSA), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). "While 'distillation' is recognized as a legitimate and useful technique in AI research, China-based AI companies are engaging in aggressive, malicious, and targeted distillation activities at an industrial scale that extract restricted proprietary functionalities and capabilities of U.S. frontier AI models," the authoring agencies said . The joint advisory noted that Chinese AI firms l...
Anthropic Says Chinese AI Firms Used 16 Million Claude Queries to Copy Model

Anthropic Says Chinese AI Firms Used 16 Million Claude Queries to Copy Model

Feb 24, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Anthropic
Anthropic on Monday said it identified "industrial-scale campaigns" mounted by three artificial intelligence (AI) companies, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, and MiniMax, to illegally extract Claude's capabilities to improve their own models. The distillation attacks generated over 16 million exchanges with its large language model (LLM) through about 24,000 fraudulent accounts in violation of its terms of service and regional access restrictions. All three companies are based in China, where the use of its services is prohibited  is prohibited due to "legal, regulatory, and security risks." Distillation refers to a technique where a less capable model is trained on the outputs generated by a stronger AI system. While distillation is a legitimate way for companies to produce smaller, cheaper versions of their own frontier models, it's illegal for competitors to leverage it to acquire such capabilities from other AI companies at a fraction of the time and cost tha...
Anthropic Discloses Fourth AI Hacking Incident Involving Claude Opus 4.6

Anthropic Discloses Fourth AI Hacking Incident Involving Claude Opus 4.6

Sep 10, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Web Security
Anthropic on Wednesday disclosed a fourth incident in which its artificial intelligence (AI) model broke into real third-party systems, marking the latest in a growing list of cases that have raised concerns about the security risks posed by autonomous AI agents. The AI company said the incident dates back to January 2026 and involved an early version of Claude Opus 4.6 that breached "third-parties after being unable to abort its task." It said it notified all the affected parties but did not share any further details. The January incident is said to have gone unnoticed until last month. In late July 2026, Anthropic revealed three of its models, including Claude Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an unnamed research model, broke into three unnamed organizations during cybersecurity evaluations without its knowledge. The American firm said it expanded its scan to roughly 481 million transcripts following the discovery of the latest incident, but noted it did not find "other...

Poison Claude Sells Discounted Claude Access While Its Operator Sees Every Customer Prompt

Aug 05, 2026 AI Security / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered more than half-a-dozen services advertisements for illegal access to artificial intelligence (AI) models on underground cybercrime forums and messaging platforms. One such service, Poison Claude, claims to offer access to Anthropic's large language models (LLMs), including Opus 4.8, Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, and Sonnet 4.6. "Advertisements for Poison Claude explain how the service can offer the cheap tokens: by taking advantage of free bonus credits, such as the US$100 bonus credit on AWS for Bedrock accounts," Okta researchers Jeremy Kirk and Mathew Woodyard said in an analysis published Tuesday. "The service plainly states on its website that: 'We add those accounts to our pool, your request is routed to a specific account under the hood (you don't see this), and you get charged 5-15% of the official per-token price depending on the model.'" Poison Claude accepts payments in cryptocurrencies. Once a cus...

Claude Code Source Leaked via npm Packaging Error, Anthropic Confirms

Apr 01, 2026 Data Breach / Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic on Tuesday confirmed that internal code for its popular artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant, Claude Code, had been inadvertently released due to a human error. "No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed," an Anthropic spokesperson said in a statement shared with CNBC News. "This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again." The discovery came after the AI upstart released version 2.1.88 of the Claude Code npm package, with users spotting that it contained a source map file that could be used to access Claude Code's source code – comprising nearly 2,000 TypeScript files and more than 512,000 lines of code. The version is no longer available for download from npm. Security researcher Chaofan Shou was the first to publicly flag it on X, stating "Claude code source code has been leaked via a map file in their npm re...

Anthropic Says Claude Mistook the Open Internet for a CTF and Breached Three Organizations

Jul 31, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Offensive Security
Anthropic on Thursday became the latest artificial intelligence (AI) company to reveal that three of its models, including Claude Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an unnamed research model, had breached three unnamed organizations during cybersecurity testing without its knowledge. The AI firm said the earliest incidents date back to April 2026, adding it made the discoveries after launching a "large-scale retrospective review" in response to a recent disclosure from OpenAI that a combination of its models escaped the sandboxed environment by exploiting a previously unreported zero-day in Artifactory to obtain internet access and break into Hugging Face's production systems with an end goal to cheat on an evaluation. "After reviewing 141,006 evaluation runs where Claude could have obtained internet access, we identified three incidents in which a model accessed the internet from within or while interacting with the evaluation environment of Irregular, one of our third-...

Securing Claude Code: The New Compliance API, Local Visibility, and Identity Governance

Aug 31, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Endpoint Visibility
Claude Code reads files, runs shell commands, invokes MCP tools, and acts through the credentials available on a developer’s machine. Anthropic’s new Compliance API endpoints give security teams their clearest view yet into that activity. They also expose a larger problem: activity logs alone cannot tell you whether an agent’s access is legitimate. AI has moved from the browser tab to the endpoint with harnesses like Claude Code. They run on developers' machines, execute bash commands locally, and connect to third parties via MCP servers, skills, and plugins. All this so the user can outsource labor to the machine and focus on designing, thinking, and creating. Local agents are not a niche category. They account for 68.6% of the AI agents Token Security discovers in customer environments, and they often inherit the employee's credentials, network position, and permissions. The shift to the endpoint has major implications for security. With Claude Code, there is no ce...

Anthropic's Claude Mythos Finds Thousands of Zero-Day Flaws Across Major Systems

Apr 08, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Secure Coding
Artificial Intelligence (AI) company Anthropic announced a new cybersecurity initiative called Project Glasswing  that will use a preview version of its new frontier model, Claude Mythos , to find and address security vulnerabilities. The model will be used by a small set of organizations, including Amazon Web Services, Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Palo Alto Networks, along with Anthropic, to secure critical software. The company said it's forming this initiative in response to capabilities observed in its general-purpose frontier model that demonstrate a "level of coding capability where they can surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities." Because of its cybersecurity capabilities and concerns that they could be abused, Anthropic has opted not to make the model generall...
When the Whole Company Adopts AI: What It Does to Your SOC

When the Whole Company Adopts AI: What It Does to Your SOC

Sep 12, 2026 AI Agent / Security Operations
Over the past year, we watched a new class of alert appear in enterprise security operations centers and grow faster than anything else in the stream: alerts that were triggered by AI tools and agents. Not attacks against AI, but the ordinary, everyday footprint of an organization using it, from developers running coding agents and non-technical staff signing consumer AI tools into corporate accounts. We reviewed AI-related activity across numerous enterprise environments. Two numbers frame everything that follows. AI-related alerts still account for only 0.43% of all SOC alerts. And that share is climbing every single month, up 685% between February and June 2026. AI is a small slice of the alert stream today and the fastest-growing slice at the same time. What makes those alerts worth a security team’s attention is not their volume but their composition. We sort everything an AI agent triggers in a SOC into three buckets: real attacks, risks, and noise, with the split being 94....

Anthropic Launches Claude Code Security for AI-Powered Vulnerability Scanning

Feb 21, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / DevSecOps
Artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic has begun to roll out a new security feature for Claude Code that can scan a user's software codebase for vulnerabilities and suggest patches. The capability, called Claude Code Security , is currently available in a limited research preview to Enterprise and Team customers. "It scans codebases for security vulnerabilities and suggests targeted software patches for human review, allowing teams to find and fix security issues that traditional methods often miss," the company said in a Friday announcement. Anthropic said the feature aims to leverage AI as a tool to help find and resolve vulnerabilities to counter attacks where threat actors weaponize the same tools to automate vulnerability discovery.  With AI agents increasingly capable of detecting security vulnerabilities that have otherwise escaped human notice, the tech upstart said the same capabilities could be used by adversaries to uncover exploitable weakness...

How Ceros Gives Security Teams Visibility and Control in Claude Code

Mar 19, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Enterprise Security
Security teams have spent years building identity and access controls for human users and service accounts. But a new category of actor has quietly entered most enterprise environments, and it operates entirely outside those controls. Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding agent, is now running across engineering organizations at scale. It reads files, executes shell commands, calls external APIs, and connects to third-party integrations called MCP servers. It does all of this autonomously, with the full permissions of the developer who launched it, on the developer's local machine, before any network-layer security tool can see it. It leaves no audit trail that the existing security infrastructure was built to capture. This walkthrough covers Ceros, an AI Trust Layer built by Beyond Identity that sits directly on the developer's machine alongside Claude Code and provides real-time visibility, runtime policy enforcement, and a cryptographic audit trail of every action the a...
Wazuh and AI For Enhanced SOC Workflows

Wazuh and AI For Enhanced SOC Workflows

Aug 21, 2026 Security Operations / Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of this decade's defining technologies. From healthcare and finance to manufacturing and education, organizations increasingly rely on AI to automate repetitive tasks, uncover patterns hidden within large datasets, and support faster decision-making. Cybersecurity has experienced a similar transformation. While attackers employ AI to automate cyberattacks and accelerate vulnerability discovery, defenders are adopting AI to improve threat detection and enhance incident response. Security Operations Centers (SOCs) receive a high volume of alerts from endpoints, cloud workloads, network devices, identity providers, and business applications. Although SIEM and XDR platforms provide visibility into these environments, analysts often spend considerable time correlating alerts, searching documentation, and determining the next investigative steps. AI offers a practical way to augment analysts by providing contextual explanations, summarizing ...
