A Quick Look at the "Strengthening America's Cybersecurity" Initiative

Oct 21, 2022
Acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step to addressing the problem in a serious way. This seems to be the reasoning for the White House recently announcing its "Strengthening America's Cybersecurity" initiative. The text of the announcement contains several statements that anyone who's ever read about cybersecurity will have heard many times over: increasing resilience, greater awareness, countering ransomware attacks – the list goes on.  There are some novel aspects to the text as well, including a realization that cybersecurity is not, has never been, and will never be something that can be solved at the nation-state level.  The White House also pointed to IoT warning labels as a solution – and reminded us all (and we do need reminding) about the importance of cybersecurity education. Let's take a look. International cooperation is critical A key point that the White House statement makes very clear is that cyberattacks are asymmetric in the...

Two New Security Flaws Reported in Ghost CMS Blogging Software

Two New Security Flaws Reported in Ghost CMS Blogging Software

Dec 22, 2022 Website Security / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed two security flaws in the JavaScript-based blogging platform known as  Ghost , one of which could be abused to elevate privileges via specially crafted HTTP requests. Ghost is an open source blogging platform that's used in more than 52,600 live websites, most of them located in the U.S., the U.K., German, China, France, Canada, and India. Tracked as CVE-2022-41654 (CVSS score: 9.6), the authentication bypass vulnerability allows unprivileged users (i.e., members) to make unauthorized modifications to newsletter settings. Cisco Talos, which  discovered  the shortcoming, said it could enable a member to change the system-wide default newsletter that all users are subscribed to by default. Even worse, the ability of a site administrator to inject JavaScript into the newsletter by default could be exploited to trigger the creation of arbitrary administrator accounts when attempting to edit the newsletter. "This gives unprivileg...

ScarCruft Uses RokRAT Malware in Operation HanKook Phantom Targeting South Korean Academics

Sep 01, 2025 Malware / Blockchain
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new phishing campaign undertaken by the North Korea-linked hacking group called ScarCruft (aka APT37) to deliver a malware known as RokRAT. The activity has been codenamed Operation HanKook Phantom by Seqrite Labs, stating the attacks appear to target individuals associated with the National Intelligence Research Association, including academic figures, former government officials, and researchers. "The attackers likely aim to steal sensitive information, establish persistence, or conduct espionage," security researcher Dixit Panchal said in a report published last week. The starting point of the attack chain is a spear-phishing email containing a lure for "National Intelligence Research Society Newsletter—Issue 52," a periodic newsletter issued by a South Korean research group focused on national intelligence, labour relations, security, and energy issues. The digital missive contains a ZIP archive attachment that...
