Microsoft Targets Android with Patent Infringement Allegations

Microsoft Targets Android with Patent Infringement Allegations

Nov 03, 2010
The mobile phone wars became more interesting late on Tuesday when Microsoft publicly claimed for the first time that Google's Android operating system infringes on its intellectual property. According to sources close to the company, Microsoft believes that Android infringes on its patented technology. This infringement spans areas from the user interface to the underlying operating system. In a statement to CNET, Microsoft's deputy general counsel, Horacio Gutierrez, said that while Microsoft prefers to resolve intellectual property licensing issues without lawsuits, it must ensure that "competitors do not free ride on our innovations." Gutierrez's comments came as Microsoft and HTC announced a new patent deal. This agreement specifically allows the Taiwanese cell phone maker to use Microsoft's patented technologies in phones running Google's Android operating system. Microsoft mentioned ongoing discussions with other phone manufacturers. "We ha...

Panda Security Partners with Brazilian Army to Combat Cyberterrorism

Nov 01, 2010
In an effort to combat cyberterrorism in Brazil, Panda Security has signed an agreement to support the training of the Brazilian Army’s operational agents. These agents are engaged in the battle against internet-based crime and strategic intervention for cyber warfare. Panda Security will also provide endpoint protection for 37,500 computers belonging to the Army’s Military Commands. This protection aims to counter malware, targeted attacks, and web threats. Panda’s anti-malware lab, PandaLabs, will collaborate with the Army’s Cyber-Warfare Communication Center to train individuals involved in the scientific and forensic investigation of cybercrime. The partnership will include the exchange of malware samples, with Panda providing rapid response and classification of malicious codes impacting Brazil. Brig. Gen. Antonino dos Santos Guerra Neto stated that Brazil has approximately 60,000 computers, experiencing an average of 100 probes daily across its 12 IT c...

Hackers Target Halloween Costume Searches with Fake Anti-Virus Trojans

Nov 01, 2010
Attackers are targeting people searching for last-minute Halloween costume ideas, reported CyberDefender on Oct. 29. The Internet security vendor, along with other firms like Blue Coat and BitDefender, warned users about the dangers of searching online for Halloween-related topics. "Popular search terms have always been a target for cyber-criminals," said Achal Khetarpal, director of CyberDefender Research Labs. CyberDefender identified a fake anti-virus Trojan downloader infecting pages related to Halloween costume searches. When users visit these pages, the fake anti-virus installer hijacks the user’s web browser and initiates a malicious process, making the PC sluggish and exposing personal data. One form of this attack, identified by Panda Labs, displays a fake video player page and prompts users to download a codec to play the video. "Popular search terms reflect current user interests, making them lucrative targets," Khetarpal explained. Criminals create p...
Legitimate-Looking Ads Used to Recruit Money Mules for Criminal Operations

Legitimate-Looking Ads Used to Recruit Money Mules for Criminal Operations

Nov 01, 2010 Cybersecurity / Financial Crime
Money mules have been aggressively recruited this year to help cybercriminals launder money, according to Fortinet. A recent example of this is the worldwide prosecution of a Zeus criminal operation, which included 37 charges against alleged money mules. Recent Zeus stories illustrate how prevalent money mules have become and how they are being used to filter, disguise, and spread money transfers. Today, mules are typically recruited into criminal organizations through legitimate-looking advertisements. A suspect ad may suggest a client is looking for a "payment processing agent," "money transfer agent," or something as vague as an "administrative representative." These recruitment ads can be found anywhere from print and online job sites to direct points of contact. While many mules likely enter into the business relationship knowing the full criminal implications of what they are doing, a surprising number do not. One of the most recent money mule rec...
