Bahamut Cyber Espionage Hackers Targeting Android Users with Fake VPN Apps

Bahamut Cyber Espionage Hackers Targeting Android Users with Fake VPN Apps

Nov 24, 2022
The cyber espionage group known as Bahamut has been attributed as behind a highly targeted campaign that infects users of Android devices with malicious apps designed to extract sensitive information. The activity, which has been active since January 2022, entails distributing rogue VPN apps through a fake SecureVPN website set up for this purpose, Slovak cybersecurity firm ESET  said  in a new report shared with The Hacker News. At least eight different variants of the spyware apps have been discovered to date, with them being trojanized versions of legitimate VPN apps like SoftVPN and OpenVPN . None of these apps are available on Google Play Store. The tampered apps and their updates are pushed to users through the fraudulent website. It's also suspected that the targets are carefully selected, since launching the app requires the victim to enter an activation key to enable the features. This implies the use of an undetermined distribution vector, although past evide...
Fast and Secure VPN on a Budget? Private Internet Access VPN Has You Covered

Fast and Secure VPN on a Budget? Private Internet Access VPN Has You Covered

Aug 12, 2022
Back when the internet consisted of a handful of computers networked together across a few research institutions, nobody could have imagined that it would one day form the backbone of a new digital way of life. And that probably explains why none of the researchers who thought up its core technologies — things like packet switching and TCP/IP — gave much consideration to the need to secure the data passing through it. But by 1989, hackers like Robert Morris had already spotted the security weaknesses of the fledgling global network and started to exploit them. And that was just the beginning. Today, network administrators and individual internet users spend significant amounts of time and money trying to keep their data safe from prying eyes. The de-facto tool most people use for that purpose is a VPN. It's a software encryption solution that prevents anyone from accessing data traversing the public internet other than its intended recipient. And VPNs make up a data privacy mark...
Beyond Compliance: The Advantage of Year-Round Network Pen Testing

Beyond Compliance: The Advantage of Year-Round Network Pen Testing

Nov 18, 2024Penetration Testing / Network Security
IT leaders know the drill—regulators and cyber insurers demand regular network penetration testing to keep the bad guys out. But here's the thing: hackers don't wait around for compliance schedules. Most companies approach network penetration testing on a set schedule, with the most common frequency being twice a year (29%), followed by three to four times per year (23%) and once per year (20%), according to the Kaseya Cybersecurity Survey Report 2024 . Compliance-focused testing can catch vulnerabilities that exist at the exact time of testing, but it's not enough to stay ahead of attackers in a meaningful way. Why More Frequent Testing Makes Sense When companies test more often, they're not just checking a box for compliance—they're actually protecting their networks. The Kaseya survey also points out that the top drivers for network penetration testing are: Cybersecurity Control and Validation (34%) – ensuring the security controls work and vulnerabilities are minimized. Re...

Effective Business Continuity Plans Require CISOs to Rethink WAN Connectivity

May 14, 2020
As more businesses leverage remote, mobile, and temporary workforces, the elements of business continuity planning are evolving and requiring that IT professionals look deep into the nuts and bolts of connectivity. CISOs and their team members are facing new challenges each and every day, many of which have been driven by digital transformation, as well as the adoption of other productivity-enhancing technologies. A case in point is the rapidly evolving need to support remote and mobile users as businesses change how they interact with staffers. For example, the recent COVID-19 crisis has forced the majority of businesses worldwide to support employees that work from home or other remote locations. Many businesses are encountering numerous problems with connection reliability, as well as the challenges presented by rapidly scaling connectivity to meet a growing number of remote workers. Add to that security and privacy issues, and it becomes evident that CISOs may very wel...

Safeguard Your Data And Privacy Online With This Award-Winning VPN

Nov 20, 2018
It seems as though not a day goes by without a new story breaking about a high-level cyber attack on a major corporation or national government. Hackers are becoming increasingly adept at breaking through a variety of super-secure firewalls, and they're not just after the riches of Fortune 500 companies. Hackers are equally (if not more) interested in hacking into your personal computer and stealing everything from your browsing history to your banking information, and they can do so without your knowledge—even if you're browsing in the comfort of your own home. A VPN ( Virtual Private Network ) is your first and most important line of defense against everything from individual hackers to large-scale malware attacks, and if you're still surfing the Web without one, you may as well be leaving your laptop open and unattended in a crowded coffee shop. So What Exactly Does a VPN Do? VPNs are specialized apps that can be installed on virtually any device that has a...

However, Onavo Protect became a data collection tool for Facebook helping the company track smartphone users' activities across multiple different applications to learn insights about how Facebook users use third-party apps. Apple removes VPN Apps from the China App Store

In order to comply with Chinese censorship law , Apple has started removing all virtual private network (VPN) apps from the App Store in China, making it harder for internet users to bypass its Great Firewall. VPN service providers that provide services in China has accused the United States tech giant of complying with Chinese stringent cyberspace regulations. In a blog post , the developers of ExpressVPN reported that Apple informed them that their VPN app had been pulled from the company's Chinese App Store, and it seems all major VPN clients have received the same notice from Apple. China has strict Internet censorship laws through the Great Firewall of China – the country's Golden Shield project that employs a variety of tricks to censor Internet and block access to major foreign websites in the country. The Great Firewall is already blocking some 171 out of the world's 1,000 top websites, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Tumblr, and The Pirate ...
