Without adequate analysis and algorithms, mass surveillance is not the answer to fighting terrorism and tracking suspects. That's what President Obama had learned last year when he signed the USA Freedom Act , which ends the bulk collection of domestic phone data by US Intelligence Agencies. There is no doubt that US Government is collecting a vast quantity of data from your smartphone to every connected device i.e. Internet of the things , but… Do they have enough capabilities to predict and identify terrorists or cyber criminals or state-sponsored hackers before they act? Facebook just launched a new notification feature that will alert you if the social network strongly suspects that your account is being hijacked or targeted by hackers working in the interest of a nation-state. The message, which you can see below, recommends users to turn ON " Login Approvals ," so that their Facebook accounts can only be accessed using stronger two-factor authentication. Facebook insists that some necessary steps are already taken to secure users' Facebook accounts that may be targeted by hackers, but the company has also stepped up to directly warn its users when a government-sponsored attack is under away. Belgacom , the largest telecommunications company in Belgium today announced that their IT Systems were hacked and infected with an unknown Malware . In order to eliminate that virus effectively, they clean up the entire system. The company also highlights that they have no indication of any impact on their telecommunication services, customer and employee data. According to the complexity of the malware, it appears to be the work of a state-sponsored entity. Belgacom which handles some of the undersea cables that carry voice and data traffic around the world, so the NSA or Britain's GCHQ could be behind the intrusion. That traffic would be a likely target for an attacker. The attack reportedly affected a few dozen machines on Belgacom's network, including some servers and the intrusion had been active for as long as two years by the time the Belgian company discovered it. Several Myanmar journalists have recently received warnings from Google that their Gmail accounts may have been targets of state-sponsored attacks. After they login to their Gmail accounts, warning message," We believe state-sponsored attackers may be attempting to compromise your account or computer " was displayed on top as shown. Google had begun the policy of notifying users of suspicious activity in June. " We are constantly on the lookout for malicious activity on our systems, in particular attempts by third parties to log into users' accounts unauthorized. " Google said in a blog post . " If you see this warning it does not necessarily mean that your account has been hijacked. It just means that we believe you may be a target, of phishing or malware for example, and that you should take immediate steps to secure your account ."
