Fake Security Plugin on WordPress Enables Remote Admin Access for Attackers

Fake Security Plugin on WordPress Enables Remote Admin Access for Attackers

May 01, 2025 Malware / Web Skimming
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a new campaign targeting WordPress sites that disguises the malware as a security plugin. The plugin, which goes by the name "WP-antymalwary-bot.php," comes with a variety of features to maintain access, hide itself from the admin dashboard, and execute remote code. "Pinging functionality that can report back to a command-and-control (C&C) server is also included, as is code that helps spread malware into other directories and inject malicious JavaScript responsible for serving ads," Wordfence's Marco Wotschka said in a report. First discovered during a site cleanup effort in late January 2025, the malware has since been detected in the wild with new variants. Some of the other names used for the plugin are listed below - addons.php wpconsole.php wp-performance-booster.php scr.php Once installed and activated, it provides threat actors administrator access to the dashboard and makes use of the REST API...

Malicious Python Packages on PyPI Downloaded 39,000+ Times, Steal Sensitive Data

Apr 05, 2025 Malware / Supply Chain Attack
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered malicious libraries in the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository that are designed to steal sensitive information and test stolen credit card data. Two of the packages, bitcoinlibdbfix and bitcoinlib-dev, masquerade as fixes for recent issues detected in a legitimate Python module called bitcoinlib, according to ReversingLabs . A third package discovered by Socket, disgrasya, contained a fully automated carding script targeting WooCommerce stores. The packages attracted hundreds of downloads before being taken down, according to statistics from pepy.tech - bitcoinlibdbfix - 1,101 downloads bitcoinlib-dev - 735 downloads disgrasya - 37,217 downloads "The malicious libraries both attempt a similar attack, overwriting the legitimate 'clw cli' command with malicious code that attempts to exfiltrate sensitive database files," ReversingLabs said. In an interesting twist, the authors of the counterfeit libraries are s...

Cybercriminals Exploit Onerror Event in Image Tags to Deploy Payment Skimmers

Feb 18, 2025 Malware / Website Hacking
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a credit card stealing malware campaign that has been observed targeting e-commerce sites running Magento by disguising the malicious content within image tags in HTML code in order to stay under the radar. MageCart is the name given to a malware that's capable of stealing sensitive payment information from online shopping sites. The attacks are known to employ a wide range of techniques – both on client- and server-side – to compromise websites and deploy credit card skimmers to facilitate theft. Typically, such malware is only triggered or loaded when users visit the checkout pages to enter credit card details by either serving a fake form or capturing the information entered by the victims in real time. The term MageCart is a reference to the original target of these cybercrime groups, the Magento platform that offers checkout and shopping cart features for online retailers. Over the years, such campaigns adapted their tactics by conce...

Thousands of Oracle NetSuite Sites at Risk of Exposing Customer Information

Thousands of Oracle NetSuite Sites at Risk of Exposing Customer Information

Aug 20, 2024 Enterprise Security / Data Breach
Cybersecurity researchers are warning about the discovery of thousands of externally-facing Oracle NetSuite e-commerce sites that have been found susceptible to leaking sensitive customer information. "A potential issue in NetSuite's SuiteCommerce platform could allow attackers to access sensitive data due to misconfigured access controls on custom record types (CRTs)," AppOmni's Aaron Costello said . It's worth emphasizing here that the issue is not a security weakness in the NetSuite product, but rather a customer misconfiguration that can lead to leakage of confidential data. The information exposed includes full addresses and mobile phone numbers of registered customers of the e-commerce sites. The attack scenario detailed by AppOmni exploits CRTs that employ table-level access controls with the "No Permission Required" access type, which grants unauthenticated users access to data by making use of NetSuite's record and search APIs. That sa...
