Cato SDP: Cloud-Scale and Global Remote Access Solution Review

Cato SDP: Cloud-Scale and Global Remote Access Solution Review

Apr 30, 2020
The Scouts acknowledged the necessity to "Be Prepared" over 100 years (!) ago; the industry should have, as well. Yet COVID-19 took businesses – more like the entire world – by surprise. Very few were prepared for the explosion of remote access, and the challenge of instantly shifting an entire organization to work from anywhere. Cato Networks shared its increase in remote access usage post coronavirus outbreak. The trend is clear. Remote access has become an essential pillar for ensuring business continuity; nevertheless, the requirements to enable this, especially at a time of crisis, can be overwhelming. The industry is undergoing a paradigm shift. In the past, most works were performed from the office, and only a subset of the business operated remotely. Today, most (if not all) users require secure and optimized access to applications from remote. Legacy VPN isn't suited to support this shift. It was designed for sporadic access by a subset of the us...
Gartner Says the Future of Network Security Lies with SASE

Gartner Says the Future of Network Security Lies with SASE

Nov 07, 2019
Cloud services and networking are driving the concept of digital businesses, yet traditional networking and cybersecurity architectures are far from meeting the demands of the digital business. Gartner's " The Future of Network Security Is in the Cloud " report spells out the potential for the transformation of networking and security in the cloud, built upon a new networking and security model. That model is called Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) , a term coined by Gartner's leading security analysts Neil MacDonald, Lawrence Orans, and Joe Skorupa. Gartner claims that SASE has the potential to invert the established networking and security service stack from one based in the data center into a design that shifts the focal point of identity to the user and the endpoint device. SASE addresses the numerous problems that have been discovered with traditional cybersecurity methods used in the cloud. Many of those problems have roots with the ideology that netwo...
How to Mitigate the Threat Cryptocurrency Mining Poses to Enterprise Security

How to Mitigate the Threat Cryptocurrency Mining Poses to Enterprise Security

Feb 05, 2018
The growing popularity of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is generating curiosity—and concern—among security specialists. Crypto mining software has been found on user machines, often installed by botnets. Organizations need to understand the risks posed by this software and what actions, if any, should be taken. To better advise our readers, we reached out to the security researchers at Cato Networks. Cato provides a cloud-based SD-WAN that includes FireWall as a Service (FWaaS) . Its research team, Cato Research Labs, maintains the company's Cloud IPS, and today released a list of crypto mining pool addresses that you can use as a blacklist in your firewall. (To download the list, visit this page .) Cato Research Labs determined crypto mining represents a moderate threat to the organization. Immediate disruption of the organization infrastructure or loss of sensitive data is not likely to be a direct outcome of crypto mining. However, there are significant risks of i...

IPS as a Service Blocks WannaCry Spread Across the WAN

IPS as a Service Blocks WannaCry Spread Across the WAN

Aug 14, 2017
One of the most devastating aspects of the recent WannaCry ransomware attack was its self-propagating capability exploiting a vulnerability in the file access protocol, SMB v1. Most enterprises defences are externally-facing, focused on stopping incoming email and web attacks. But, once attackers gain a foothold inside the network through malware, there are very few security controls that would prevent the spread of the attack between enterprise locations in the Wide Area Network (WAN). This is partly due to the way enterprises deploy security tools, such as IPS appliances, and the effort needed to maintain those tools across multiple locations. It's for those reasons Cato Networks recently introduced a context-aware Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) as part of its secure SD-WAN service . There are several highlights in this announcement that challenge the basic concept of how IT security maintains an IPS device and sustains the effectiveness of its protection. Cato Network...

Hands-On Review: Converged Networking and Security with Cato Networks

May 08, 2017
Nobody likes to do router and firewall management. It often requires a lot of hard labor just keeping the infrastructure up and running. If you ever had to set up IPsec tunnels between different firewall brands, change a firewall rule and hope nothing breaks, upgrade to the latest software or urgently patch a vulnerability – you know what I am talking about. All of these issues have been with us basically forever. Recently, the list of complex tasks extended to getting cloud infrastructure connected to the rest of the network, and secure access for mobile users. There seems to be a change coming to this key part of IT, a silver lining if you will. We decided to take a look at one solution to this problem – the Cato Cloud from Cato Networks. Founded in 2015, Cato Networks provides a software-defined and cloud-based secure enterprise network that connects all locations, people and data to the Cato Cloud – a single, global, and secure network. Cato promises to simplify netwo...
