Malicious PyPI Packages Stole Cloud Tokens—Over 14,100 Downloads Before Removal

Mar 15, 2025 Malware / Supply Chain Security
Cybersecurity researchers have warned of a malicious campaign targeting users of the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository with bogus libraries masquerading as "time" related utilities, but harboring hidden functionality to steal sensitive data such as cloud access tokens. Software supply chain security firm ReversingLabs said it discovered two sets of packages totaling 20 of them. The packages have been cumulatively downloaded over 14,100 times - snapshot-photo (2,448 downloads) time-check-server (316 downloads) time-check-server-get (178 downloads) time-server-analysis (144 downloads) time-server-analyzer (74 downloads) time-server-test (155 downloads) time-service-checker (151 downloads) aclient-sdk (120 downloads) acloud-client (5,496 downloads) acloud-clients (198 downloads) acloud-client-uses (294 downloads) alicloud-client (622 downloads) alicloud-client-sdk (206 downloads) amzclients-sdk (100 downloads) awscloud-clients-core (206 downloads) creden...
Watch Out! Cryptocurrency Miners Targeting Dockers, AWS and Alibaba Cloud

Watch Out! Cryptocurrency Miners Targeting Dockers, AWS and Alibaba Cloud

Apr 22, 2022
LemonDuck, a cross-platform cryptocurrency mining botnet, is targeting Docker to mine cryptocurrency on Linux systems as part of an active malware campaign. "It runs an anonymous mining operation by the use of proxy pools, which hide the wallet addresses," CrowdStrike  said  in a new report. "It evades detection by targeting Alibaba Cloud's monitoring service and disabling it." Known to strike both Windows and Linux environments, LemonDuck is primarily engineered for abusing the system resources to mine Monero. But it's also capable of credential theft, lateral movement, and facilitating the deployment of additional payloads for follow-on activities. "It uses a wide range of spreading mechanisms — phishing emails, exploits, USB devices, brute force, among others — and it has shown that it can quickly take advantage of news, events, or the release of new exploits to run effective campaigns," Microsoft  detailed  in a technical write-up of the ma...

China suspends deal with Alibaba for not sharing Log4j 0-day first with the government

Dec 22, 2021
China's internet regulator, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has temporarily suspended a partnership with Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing subsidiary of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, for six months on account of the fact that it failed to promptly inform the government about a critical security vulnerability affecting the broadly used Log4j logging library. The development was disclosed by  Reuters  and  South China Morning Post , citing a report from 21st Century Business Herald, a Chinese business-news daily newspaper. "Alibaba Cloud did not immediately report vulnerabilities in the popular, open-source logging framework Apache Log4j2 to China's telecommunications regulator," Reuters said. "In response, MIIT suspended a cooperative partnership with the cloud unit regarding cybersecurity threats and information-sharing platforms." Tracked as  CVE-2021-44228  (CVSS score: 10.0) and codenamed  Log4Shell  or LogJam, t...

AI Agents and the Non‑Human Identity Crisis: How to Deploy AI More Securely at Scale

AI Agents and the Non‑Human Identity Crisis: How to Deploy AI More Securely at Scale

May 27, 2025Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Identity
Artificial intelligence is driving a massive shift in enterprise productivity, from GitHub Copilot's code completions to chatbots that mine internal knowledge bases for instant answers. Each new agent must authenticate to other services, quietly swelling the population of non‑human identities (NHIs) across corporate clouds. That population is already overwhelming the enterprise: many companies now juggle at least 45 machine identities for every human user . Service accounts, CI/CD bots, containers, and AI agents all need secrets, most commonly in the form of API keys, tokens, or certificates, to connect securely to other systems to do their work. GitGuardian's State of Secrets Sprawl 2025 report reveals the cost of this sprawl: over 23.7 million secrets surfaced on public GitHub in 2024 alone. And instead of making the situation better, repositories with Copilot enabled the leak of secrets 40 percent more often .  NHIs Are Not People Unlike human beings logging into systems, ...
