4 Ways Hackers use Social Engineering to Bypass MFA

4 Ways Hackers use Social Engineering to Bypass MFA

Feb 12, 2024 Cyber Threat / Password Security
When it comes to access security, one recommendation stands out above the rest: multi-factor authentication (MFA). With passwords alone being simple work for hackers, MFA provides an essential layer of protection against breaches. However, it's important to remember that MFA isn't foolproof. It can be bypassed, and it often is.  If a password is compromised, there are several options available to hackers looking to circumvent the added protection of MFA. We’ll explore four social engineering tactics hackers successfully use to breach MFA and emphasize the importance of having a strong password as part of a layered defense.  1. Adversary-in-the-middle (AITM) attacks AITM attacks involve deceiving users into believing they’re logging into a genuine network, application, or website. But really, they’re giving up their information to a fraudulent lookalike. This lets hackers intercept passwords and manipulate security measures, including MFA prompts. For instance, a spear-phis...
MFA Spamming and Fatigue: When Security Measures Go Wrong

MFA Spamming and Fatigue: When Security Measures Go Wrong

Jan 18, 2024 Authentication Security / Passwords
In today's digital landscape, traditional password-only authentication systems have proven to be vulnerable to a wide range of cyberattacks. To safeguard critical business resources, organizations are increasingly turning to multi-factor authentication (MFA) as a more robust security measure. MFA requires users to provide multiple authentication factors to verify their identity, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorized access. However, cybercriminals are relentless in their pursuit of finding ways to  bypass MFA systems . One such method gaining traction is MFA spamming attacks, also known as MFA fatigue, or  MFA bombing . This article delves into MFA spamming attacks, including the best practices to mitigate this growing threat. What is MFA spamming? MFA spamming refers to the malicious act of inundating a target user's email, phone, or other registered devices with numerous MFA prompts or confirmation codes. The objective behind this tactic is to ...
Why Is It So Challenging to Go Passwordless?

Why Is It So Challenging to Go Passwordless?

Sep 11, 2024 Password Security / Identity Management
Imagine a world where you never have to remember another password. Seems like a dream come true for both end users and IT teams, right? But as the old saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."  If your organization is like many, you may be contemplating a move to passwordless authentication. But the reality is that a passwordless security approach comes with its own set of pitfalls and perils. In this post, we’ll discuss the real-world complexity of going passwordless and explore why strengthening your existing password protocols may be the simpler solution.  The appeal of passwordless authentication Password-related vulnerabilities pose a major threat to organizational security. According to research by  LastPass , a full 80% of data breaches stem from weak, reused, or compromised passwords. This sobering statistic highlights the appeal of passwordless systems, which offer a way to completely circumvent the risks associated with traditional pas...

A Secure User Authentication Method – Planning is More Important than Ever

A Secure User Authentication Method – Planning is More Important than Ever

Jan 16, 2023 Identity Management / MFA
When considering authentication providers, many organizations consider the ease of configuration, ubiquity of usage, and technical stability. Organizations cannot always be judged on those metrics alone. There is an increasing need to evaluate company ownership, policies and the stability, or instability, that it brings. How Leadership Change Affects Stability In recent months, a salient example is that of Twitter. The Twitter platform has been around since 2006 and is used by millions worldwide. With many users and a seemingly robust authentication system, organizations used Twitter as a primary or secondary authentication service. Inconsistent leadership and policies mean the stability of a platform is subject to change, which is especially true with Twitter as of late. The ownership change to Elon Musk precipitated widespread changes to staffing and policies. Due to those changes,  a large portion of staff was let go , but this included many individuals responsible for the t...
A Self-Service Password Reset Project Can Be A Quick Win For IT

A Self-Service Password Reset Project Can Be A Quick Win For IT

Oct 12, 2020
Since the beginning of this year, organizations' IT staff have faced numerous challenges and an increased workload as a result of the global pandemic and shift to a mainly remote workforce. Supporting end-users that are now working from home has introduced new challenges in troubleshooting since it isn’t as simple as visiting an end user’s desk to resolve issues as they arise. One support issue common to both on-premises and remote end-users is password resets and other account-related activities. These include accounts that are locked out, passwords that have expired, and password changes. Implementing a  self-service password reset (SSPR)  solution can be a quick win for IT staff who are now supporting both on-premises and remote workers and taking care of other normal daily tasks. Let’s look at why SSPR solutions can lead to quick results in lowering the overall support burden on IT staff. Increased Strain On IT Staff The global pandemic this year has been challengin...
MFA Prompt Bombing: Why Your Second Factor Isn't Saving You

MFA Prompt Bombing: Why Your Second Factor Isn't Saving You

May 26, 2026 Password Security / Social Engineering
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) was supposed to close a critical gap in identity security. It meant that, even if an attacker possessed the account credentials, they couldn't log in without the second factor. While that logic was sound, attackers have now figured out that they don't need to steal the second factor: they just need the user to hand it over. If your workforce authenticates with push-based MFA, this attack is a live threat to your organization today. Tools like Specops Secure Access are built specifically to close that gap, but before getting into the fix, it's worth understanding how this technique works. How MFA prompt bombing works The attack requires three key elements to work: Valid account credentials, usually sourced from breached password dumps on the dark web A login portal that uses push-based MFA (such as a VPN, Microsoft 365, Okta, or Duo) A victim who is alerted every time the attacker tries the login Attackers repeatedly tri...
Scattered Spider: Understanding Help Desk Scams and How to Defend Your Organization

Scattered Spider: Understanding Help Desk Scams and How to Defend Your Organization

Jun 03, 2025 Identity Security / Cloud Security
In the wake of high-profile attacks on UK retailers Marks & Spencer and Co-op, Scattered Spider has been all over the media, with coverage spilling over into the mainstream news due to the severity of the disruption caused — currently looking like hundreds of millions in lost profits for M&S alone.  This coverage is extremely valuable for the cybersecurity community as it raises awareness of the battles that security teams are fighting every day. But it’s also created a lot of noise that can make it tricky to understand the big picture.  The headline story from the recent campaign against UK retailers is the use of help desk scams. This typically involves the attacker calling up a company’s help desk with some level of information — at minimum, PII that allows them to impersonate their victim, and sometimes a password, leaning heavily on their native English-speaking abilities to trick the help desk operator into giving them access to a user account.  Help Des...
Strengthen Your Password Policy With GDPR Compliance

Strengthen Your Password Policy With GDPR Compliance

Jun 17, 2021
A solid password policy is the first line of defense for your corporate network. Protecting your systems from unauthorized users may sound easy on the surface, but it can actually be quite complicated. You have to balance password security with usability, while also following various regulatory requirements. Companies in the EU must have password policies that are compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Even if your company isn't based in the EU, these requirements apply if you have employees or customers residing in the EU or customers purchasing there. In this post, we will look at GDPR requirements for passwords and provide practical tips on how to design your password policy. Remember, even if GDPR isn't required for you now, the fundamentals of a data protection regulation plan can help strengthen your organization's security.  Password requirements for GDPR compliance You may be surprised to discover that the GDPR laws do not actually mentio...
Stop Worrying About Passwords Forever

Stop Worrying About Passwords Forever

Sep 01, 2022
So far 2022 confirms that passwords are not dead yet. Neither will they be anytime soon. Even though Microsoft and Apple are championing passwordless authentication methods, most applications and websites will not remove this option for a very long time. Think about it, internal apps that you do not want to integrate with third-party identity providers, government services, legacy applications, and even SaaS providers may not want to invest in new integrations or restrict their existing authentication methods. After all, online businesses are interested in user traction, and security usually brings friction. For example, a few days ago,  Kickstarter sent out millions of password reset  emails "simplifying its login process," including for people that used social login without a password.  Though you may be able to remove passwords from many enterprise components, a large portion of third-party providers, government portals, business suppliers, and SaaS services will st...
How to Eliminate Identity-Based Threats

How to Eliminate Identity-Based Threats

Jan 23, 2025 Identity Security / Enterprise Security
Despite significant investments in advanced technologies and employee training programs, credential and user-based attacks remain alarmingly prevalent, accounting for 50-80% of enterprise breaches [1] , [2] . While identity-based attacks continue to dominate as the leading cause of security incidents, the common approach to identity security threats is still threat reduction, implementing layers of controls to reduce risk while accepting that some attacks will succeed. This methodology relies on detection, response, and recovery capabilities to minimize damage after a breach has already occurred, but it does not prevent the possibility of successful attacks.  The good news? Finally, there’s a solution that marks a true paradigm shift: with modern authentication technologies, the complete elimination of identity-based threats is now within reach. This groundbreaking advancement moves us beyond the traditional focus on risk reduction, offering organizations a way to fully neutraliz...
Why You Should Swap Passwords for Passphrases

Why You Should Swap Passwords for Passphrases

Oct 22, 2025 Data Breach / Enterprise Security
The advice didn't change for decades: use complex passwords with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. The idea is to make passwords harder for hackers to crack via brute force methods. But more recent guidance shows our focus should be on password length, rather than complexity. Length is the more important security factor, and passphrases are the simplest way to get your users to create (and remember!) longer passwords. The math that matters When attackers steal password hashes from a breach, they brute-force by hashing millions of guesses per second until something matches. The time this takes depends on one thing: how many possible combinations exist. A traditional 8-character "complex" password (P@ssw0rd!) offers roughly 218 trillion combinations. Sounds impressive until you realize modern GPU setups can test those combinations in months, not years. Increase that to 16 characters using only lowercase letters, and you're looking at 26^16 combinations,...
