Perfecting the Defense-in-Depth Strategy with Automation

Perfecting the Defense-in-Depth Strategy with Automation

Jan 26, 2024 Cyber Threat Intelligence
Medieval castles stood as impregnable fortresses for centuries, thanks to their meticulous design. Fast forward to the digital age, and this medieval wisdom still echoes in cybersecurity. Like castles with strategic layouts to withstand attacks, the Defense-in-Depth strategy is the modern counterpart — a multi-layered approach with strategic redundancy and a blend of passive and active security controls.  However, the evolving cyber threat landscape can challenge even the most fortified defenses. Despite the widespread adoption of the Defense-in-Depth strategy, cyber threats persist. Fortunately, the Defense-in-Depth strategy can be augmented using Breach and Attack Simulation (BAS), an automated tool that assesses and improves every security control in each layer. Defense-in-Depth: False Sense of Security with Layers Also known as multi-layered defense, the defense-in-depth strategy has been widely adopted by organizations since the early 2000s. It's based on the assumption th...
Re-Focusing Cyber Insurance with Security Validation

Re-Focusing Cyber Insurance with Security Validation

Nov 10, 2022
The rise in the costs of data breaches, ransomware, and other cyber attacks leads to rising cyber insurance premiums and more limited cyber insurance coverage. This cyber insurance situation increases risks for organizations struggling to find coverage or facing steep increases. Some  Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP's  law firm clients, for example, reported a three-fold increase in insurance rates, and carriers are making "a huge pullback" on coverage limits in the past two years. Their cybersecurity practice co-head, Michelle Reed, adds, "The reduced coverage amount can no longer shield policyholders from cyber losses. A $10 million policy can end up with a $150,000 limit on cyber frauds." The cyber-insurance situation is so concerning that the U.S. Treasury Department recently issued a  request for public input  on a potential federal cyber-insurance response program. This request is in addition to the assessment led conjointly by the Federal Insura...
Automating Zero Trust in Healthcare: From Risk Scoring to Dynamic Policy Enforcement Without Network Redesign

Automating Zero Trust in Healthcare: From Risk Scoring to Dynamic Policy Enforcement Without Network Redesign

Apr 24, 2025 IoT Security / Zero Trust
The Evolving Healthcare Cybersecurity Landscape   Healthcare organizations face unprecedented cybersecurity challenges in 2025. With operational technology (OT) environments increasingly targeted and the convergence of IT and medical systems creating an expanded attack surface, traditional security approaches are proving inadequate. According to recent statistics, the healthcare sector experienced a record-breaking year for data breaches in 2024, with over 133 million patient records exposed. The average cost of a healthcare data breach has now reached $11 million, making it the most expensive industry for breaches.  What's changed dramatically is the focus of attackers. No longer content with merely extracting patient records, cybercriminals are now targeting the actual devices that deliver patient care. The stakes have never been higher, with ransomware now representing 71% of all attacks against healthcare organizations and causing an average downtime of 11 days per inc...

The Future of Network Security: Predictive Analytics and ML-Driven Solutions

The Future of Network Security: Predictive Analytics and ML-Driven Solutions

Feb 21, 2023 Network Security / Machine Learning
As the digital age evolves and continues to shape the business landscape, corporate networks have become increasingly complex and distributed. The amount of data a company collects to detect malicious behaviour constantly increases, making it challenging to detect deceptive and unknown attack patterns and the so-called "needle in the haystack". With a growing number of cybersecurity threats, such as data breaches, ransomware attacks, and malicious insiders, organizations are facing significant challenges in successfully monitoring and securing their networks. Furthermore, the talent shortage in the field of cybersecurity makes manual threat hunting and log correlation a cumbersome and difficult task. To address these challenges, organizations are turning to predictive analytics and Machine Learning (ML) driven network security solutions as essential tools for securing their networks against cyber threats and the unknown bad. The Role of ML-Driven Network Security Solutions ...
It's a Zero-day? It's Malware? No! It's Username and Password

It's a Zero-day? It's Malware? No! It's Username and Password

Sep 01, 2023 Unified Identity Protection
As cyber threats continue to evolve, adversaries are deploying a range of tools to breach security defenses and compromise sensitive data. Surprisingly, one of the most potent weapons in their arsenal is not malicious code but simply stolen or weak usernames and passwords. This article explores the seriousness of compromised credentials, the challenges they present to security solutions, and the importance of implementing robust measures to protect Active Directory (AD) environments. Additionally, we introduce Silverfort Unified Identity Protection , a comprehensive solution that offers enhanced security for AD environments against the misuse of compromised credentials. The Power of Stolen Credentials: Full Access to Any Resource  In the world of cyberattacks, stolen usernames and passwords are a highly effective means of gaining unauthorized access to networks and systems. They grant adversaries an entry point, allowing them subsequent access to sensitive on-prem and cloud reso...
PerfektBlue Bluetooth Vulnerabilities Expose Millions of Vehicles to Remote Code Execution

PerfektBlue Bluetooth Vulnerabilities Expose Millions of Vehicles to Remote Code Execution

Jul 11, 2025 Vulnerability / Vehicle Security
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a set of four security flaws in OpenSynergy's BlueSDK Bluetooth stack that, if successfully exploited, could allow remote code execution on millions of transport vehicles from different vendors. The vulnerabilities, dubbed PerfektBlue , can be fashioned together as an exploit chain to run arbitrary code on cars from at least three major automakers, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Skoda, according to PCA Cyber Security (formerly PCAutomotive). Outside of these three, a fourth unnamed original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has been confirmed to be affected as well. "PerfektBlue exploitation attack is a set of critical memory corruption and logical vulnerabilities found in OpenSynergy BlueSDK Bluetooth stack that can be chained together to obtain Remote Code Execution (RCE)," the cybersecurity company said . While infotainment systems are often seen as isolated from critical vehicle controls, in practice, this separation depends he...
Learning How to Hack: Why Offensive Security Training Benefits Your Entire Security Team

Learning How to Hack: Why Offensive Security Training Benefits Your Entire Security Team

May 14, 2025 Cybersecurity / Ethical Hacking
Organizations across industries are experiencing significant escalations in cyberattacks, particularly targeting critical infrastructure providers and cloud-based enterprises. Verizon's recently released 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report found an 18% YoY increase in confirmed breaches, with the exploitation of vulnerabilities as an initial access step growing by 34%.  As attacks rise in volume and impact, many organizations turn to security tools and compliance standards as their first line of defense. While both are important and necessary components to mitigating cyber risk, they alone are not a silver bullet solution. Effective security requires people, process, and technology, but people must serve as the primary drivers. Your tools and checklists are only as strong as the practitioners implementing them at scale.  This heightens the importance of investing in offensive operations training across every role in the security function. Too often, offensive operation...
Chinese Hackers Operate Undetected in U.S. Critical Infrastructure for Half a Decade

Chinese Hackers Operate Undetected in U.S. Critical Infrastructure for Half a Decade

Feb 08, 2024 Critical Infrastructure / Network security
The U.S. government on Wednesday said the Chinese state-sponsored hacking group known as  Volt Typhoon  had been embedded into some critical infrastructure networks in the country for at least five years. Targets of the threat actor include communications, energy, transportation, and water and wastewater systems sectors in the U.S. and Guam. "Volt Typhoon's choice of targets and pattern of behavior is not consistent with traditional cyber espionage or intelligence gathering operations, and the U.S. authoring agencies assess with high confidence that Volt Typhoon actors are pre-positioning themselves on IT networks to enable lateral movement to OT assets to disrupt functions," the U.S. government  said . The idea is to pre-position themselves on IT networks by maintaining persistence and understanding the target environment over time for disruptive or destructive cyber attacks against U.S. critical infrastructure in the event of a major crisis or conflict with the coun...
