⚡ Weekly Recap: Windows 0-Day, VPN Exploits, Weaponized AI, Hijacked Antivirus and More

Apr 14, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Cybersecurity
Attackers aren’t waiting for patches anymore — they are breaking in before defenses are ready. Trusted security tools are being hijacked to deliver malware. Even after a breach is detected and patched, some attackers stay hidden. This week’s events show a hard truth: it’s not enough to react after an attack. You have to assume that any system you trust today could fail tomorrow. In a world where AI tools can be used against you and ransomware hits faster than ever, real protection means planning for things to go wrong — and still staying in control. Check out this week’s update to find important threat news, helpful webinars, useful tools, and tips you can start using right away. ⚡ Threat of the Week Windows 0-Day Exploited for Ransomware Attacks — A security affecting the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) was exploited as a zero-day in ransomware attacks aimed at a small number of targets, Microsoft revealed. The flaw, CVE-2025-29824, is a privilege escalation vulnerabilit...
Fedora 14 Introduces libjpegturbo for Faster Image Processing

Fedora 14 Introduces libjpegturbo for Faster Image Processing

Nov 05, 2010
Fedora 14, known as "Laughlin," officially launched on Tuesday, offering numerous new features aimed at enhancing the user experience for this open-source desktop operating system. Usability Focus In recent releases, Fedora, sponsored by Red Hat, has concentrated on improving usability. According to DistroWatch, Fedora is the second most popular Linux distribution after Ubuntu. Recent improvements have targeted networking, software management, and hardware support, focusing on bug fixes and stability in the latest release. Enhanced Desktop Environment One significant addition to Fedora 14 is "libjpegturbo," a library that dramatically improves performance for users loading and saving JPEG images. This library "practically halves processing time on most systems," claim the developers, even benefiting those on older hardware. Another notable feature is SPICE (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment), a desktop virtualization framework enha...
TCLBANKER Banking Trojan Targets Financial Platforms via WhatsApp and Outlook Worms

TCLBANKER Banking Trojan Targets Financial Platforms via WhatsApp and Outlook Worms

May 08, 2026 Malware / Threat Intelligence
Threat hunters have flagged a previously undocumented Brazilian banking trojan dubbed TCLBANKER that's capable of targeting 59 banking, fintech, and cryptocurrency platforms. The activity is being tracked by Elastic Security Labs under the moniker REF3076 . The malware family is assessed to be a major update of the Maverick  family, which is known to leverage a worm called SORVEPOTEL to spread via WhatsApp Web to a victim's contacts. The Maverick campaign is attributed to a threat cluster that Trend Micro calls Water Saci. At the core of the attack chain is a loader with robust anti-analysis capabilities that deploys two embedded modules: a full-featured banking trojan and a worm component that uses WhatsApp and Microsoft Outlook for propagation. "The observed infection chain bundles a malicious MSI installer inside a ZIP file," security researchers Jia Yu Chan, Daniel Stepanic, Seth Goodwin, and Terrance DeJesus said . "These MSI installer packages are abus...

Over 400 Arch Linux AUR Packages Hijacked to Deploy Infostealer and eBPF Rootkit

Over 400 Arch Linux AUR Packages Hijacked to Deploy Infostealer and eBPF Rootkit

Jun 12, 2026 Linux / Supply Chain Attack
Attackers took over more than 400 packages in the Arch User Repository (AUR) this week and rewrote their build scripts to install a credential stealer on any machine that built them. The malware is a Rust binary built to harvest developer secrets. When it lands with root, it can also load an eBPF rootkit to hide itself. The AUR is Arch Linux's community package collection, and it is separate from the official Arch repositories, which were not affected. If you installed or updated an AUR package on or after June 11, check it against the current affected-package lists before trusting the host. The list of names is large, still growing, and not yet complete. This attack goes after the trust model, not a software flaw. The compromised packages kept their names, their histories, and the trust that came with them. Only the build instructions changed. The trap sat in the recipe, leaving the package itself looking exactly like the software users meant to install. No exploit, no ze...
